Well I seem to be in a never ending cycle of wars thnkas to the muslims clowning on my vassals.

Here's my question: Are there any advantages and disadvantages of being at war in terns of events and such?
I believe that one disadvantage is that cultural conversion events won't occur? (true?)

Do I gain a better chance of 'discovering' martial techs?

Yup, there are some positive events related to the state of war.
*You can discover new martial technology.
*New courtiers may arrive in your court.

IIRC Being at war decreases the MTTH for the martial technologies discovery events but increases the MTTH for the other discovery events. I think the state of war is a modifier for the cultural conversion events. It is also a modifier for the stability events so if you are at war for a long time your stability may be decreased.

Also there are a number of negative events not directly related to war, but it is more likely that you will get them while at war. The province revolt series is more likely to occur if the province regiment is mobilized and the bankruptcy events series. Bankruptcy can occur other ways, for example if you make a massive payment to a courtier while having very little in the treasury can occur. In my experience the best way to get into massive amounts of debt is to have your army mobilized for a long period of time.

... and then there are the battle events, where you or your generals can gain prestige and martial skill ... or get wounded and killed or captured.

Being at war for extended periods of time can also trigger events that lower stability (but that just might be in DVIP).

Even just being at war can trigger them eg. at the start of a Poland 1066 game yesterday (DVIP) I declare war on the pagans north of me and within 2 months I had the event "The constant state of war..." or something like that - options were -1 stab or pay 500g to try and keep it pleasant.
