Has anyone else noticed the ai seems to be overly fond of war reparations in AoW? I frequently see the ai attack someone, crush them...then peace out for war reparations even when the target's income is probably less than a ducat per month. Five to 10 years later, they'll do it again. It's even more perplexing when the target is a OPM in Germany that the hansa will just fight over and over again and never actually expand, or the Ottoman beyliks. That might be a function of the new 100% rule, but I've seen it even when the targets are only allied to other minors who have been sieged down as well.

Most recently, France was drawn into a coalition war against Venice as Venice's ally(after Venice had illogically gone a no-claim conquest spree in Italy) and after the coalition stomped them and occupied half of France, peaced out for war reps and 44 ducats. Not even a canceled treaty. What's up with that?

While we are opening this particular topic, I'd like to add that war reparations should be possible to enforce only on agressor in the war, it would be more logical.

Nah, I like enforcing war reparation on other asshole nations that i've attacked. Not really much for the monetary gain(they're usually quite poor) but I'm quite fond of the idea that they have to keep paying war reparations for such long time afterwards, reminding them of their loss towards me. Of course it's just a program and doesn't have feelings, but it feels nice for me nontheless.

War reparations shouldn't be a reliable source of income to you. They are supposed to be another mean to really screw the country over after peace.

I really enjoyed both that and the Humiliate peace option. Nothing like humiliating France and Castille in the same war, making them pay all your war costs for 10 years. It's a nice bonus, and for relatively cheap warscore.

With that patch, taking too many provinces in a single war wouldn't be productive. Thus you can push the WS to 50%+, take what you need and screw the enemy over with those CBs

Well, 3PM Haixi just got war reparations from a full sized Ming. Also asked for a return core for their ally. Now that truly is war reparations (45 monthly income for Ming while the recipient has around 12 BT), but surely trying to get one province at least could have been useful.

Overall though, I recon that I find myself quite found of war reparations. That's a small long term burden for the ennemy and a good way to spend WS in an useful way (ie don't get too much AE while still getting something nice, unlike most non conquest deals because it's not bad but is a MP sink (revoke core), takes a slot or wathever else).

These war reparations somehow contradict the 1.7 changes of longer truces, since it will slow down the recovering speed of the loser.

On the other hand that's exactly why I love war reparations - they prevent my opponents to build their army to the max again, because they won't be able to afford them (hopefully). I rarely peace out now without negotiating for war reparations, especially with dimplomatic ideas and the -20% warscore cost for provinces I usually find enough room for it. And on top of it, it doesn't take up a relation slot like transfer of trade power would. To be honest I'd be surprised to not see war reparations changed or at least have the warscore increased.

Bigger countries like Muscovy pay me 2 ducats per month (1485) over 10 years ... that's 240 ducats without the inflation hit for direct payments. Not bad! Not bad at all...

Yeah, I don't have a problem with the reparations themselves, it's just that the ai always seems to take just that instead of their actual wargoal or anything that would really benefit them, repeatedly.

France declared war on me for my one remaining mainland province which was Calais, and then wouldn't accept any deals unless I payed them reparations for the war they started. They also made me release Tyrone and pay a hefty lump sum. I decided to delete that save and give them Calais in the HYW when I give it another go.

I think there's probably some truth to what OP is saying.
