It's a good poem, though.

not to nitpic, but there wasn't an independent Norway at the time of the war. Could it follow independent foreign poliicy while being part of Sweden?

It was in personal Union with the Swedish king, sort of semi-independent

yes, but they didn't have a foreign policy of their own, did they?;) That is unless the king had a dual personality.

Foreign policy was the only policy area left to the Swedes, so the answer is no.

The war of 1864 is quite well-known, I think, mostly due to it being so well-remembered in Denmark.

I think it's sad that defeats are being remembered and celebrated, as they inspire vengeance.

Well, Ibsen didn't have to take that sort of sordid political reality into account, did he?

It's an interesting question, though, just how much foreign policy was in the hands of the Swedes legally, as opposed to in practice. "Kongeriget Norge er et frit, uavhengigt og uavhendeligt rige..." And we had our own army and navy, which are the de facto foundations of any foreign policy.

All we Danes shake our heads and mumble "damn Germans" when we hear the word Dybbøl Mølle... (the battle at the mill which has become a hardcore national symbol)

And it kind of surprises me that it isnt mentioned that much anywhere. The wars against Denmark, Austria and France were all an important part of uniting Germany under Prussian "guidance", so the effect of the 64'-war is quite significant, though it was the least important of the three wars. And the defeat itself... well, noone in their right mind would defend that piece of land. It is just strategically impossible. Like WWII. And the parts we got back in 1920, well, those were the ones with a majority of Danes, so that were the ones we should have. Nobody really wants the other parts back. If anything, we want Skåne back from Sweden :D

But the Danish king back then in 1920 actually wanted the city of Flensborg...

A Danish-American author, Pohl Anderson, used him in a book he wrote, "Three Hearts and Three Lions" so I had to look him up to see what ol' Pohl was talking about! :)

Lots of PA's heroes are Danes.

No but the King of Sweden and Norway had promiised Swedish/Noirwegian support in case of war, but he did not get that promise supported in the parlament (the Swedish one) and no support was given. That was the reason for the Danes being pissed of and pretty much cruched the pan-scandinavian movement.

Yes I was thougt about it as the first of the three wars to unite germany and the end of the big pan-scandinavian movment of the 19-century.

I studied it in a two semester long college course on the history of Germany from 1648-1989. You got back most of the Danes through that plebiscite in 1920, so your in pretty good shape I think.
