I was playing as Florence, justified on Naples, declared war. Naples is a junior partner of Aragon which is allied with France. France is my ally. France won't join the war against Naples, but will join if I DoW on Aragon. So I DoW on Naples where France won't join. France joins anyway. This is pretty deceptive and may have just ruined my ironman game...

The game makes no bones about the fact that the PU senior is the person you're actually attacking, not the junior. Why would it suddenly change in this one instance? It would've been more rational to assume France would respond to Aragon rather than ignore Aragon because "TECHNICALLY I declared on Naples"

If you check the war declaration screen, it says Aragon is automatically a cobelligerant.

Yeah, I had the problem with Denmark and friends. But alt +f4 fix everything if you're not sure about the outcome of some blurry mechanics

There's nothing "blurry" in it. An overlord is always a co-belligerent, no matter what. Co-belligerents automatically call in their own allies in a defensive war. One can "attack" a vassal or junior partner because most CB mechanics require a border with the target and because they are de jure separate political entities.

The blurry thing is that the game isn't specifying this very well for new players. Sometimes I wish that Paradox would release a comprehensive rulebook with all these "hidden" rules.

Meh, the game is filled with things that are very confusing to understand, without a proper tooltip.

This case is just common sense, very low priority imho. Any other outcome would be way more confusing.

The UI says this probably because France wouldn't defend Naples, but would defend Aragon. And since an attack on Naples is an attack on Aragon, France joins.

UI just doesnt specifically mention France in this case. Attacking a vassal/PU is just an attack on the overlord, obviously. So the overlord can call in allies.

It's true that the game could just show this, but again, there are so many very confusing situations in this game begging for a better tooltip. This is not one of them.

Read it wrong then, but still. Don't attack subjects if you can't deal with the overlord's allies.
