I hate the military system in this game. It's impossible to build up any kind of powerful army. The USA gets SLAUGHTERED by Mexico in when it joins the Texan War of Independence and I have to slowly create troops in the two or three states that allow me too but they're all the way across the damn country. Completely useless as reinforcements. Until there are some real cheats or trainers or, you know, a difficulty setting I can't play this.

I got destroyed by Mexico as the US as well. I think it's because historically, Mexico's army was about 3x the size of the US's. We just won because of moral and leadership. It's kind of hard to simulate that in-game.

Keep trying, you will figure it out. It is pretty easy to steamroll Mexico even without enlisting the help of Texas as it should be. I personally think it is pretty cool. I love how you cannot just raise an army as long as your manpower is high and how you really have to worry about getting the resources you need to supply your army. Applying these concepts in reverse is even more entertaining when you blockade and deprive other countries of resources and you can just have your way with them.

Did you try blockading their ports? And did you have any Generals? Both help a lot.

Wow, all that based on one playthrough? i must say i've been pleasantly surprised not being able to just walker over the AI with my armies...

Also, don't bother joining the texans (if mexico gives you a hard time...), set a national focus closer to the border, and encourage soldiers + up military spending so they'll get paid more & thereby increase the likelyhood of your pops becomming soldiers.

Now when that's done, build some more armies, once you've expanded your numbers, go smack down the mexicans... (allying USCA might be a good way to distract some of their forces).

Advice:
Ally with Texas, start creating troops and move all your available units into the capital of Texas for defense. Don't attack anywhere. Then, blockade the Mexican ports.

This will raise their war exhaustion as they throw their armies against your defensive stack. It's much harder to attack then defend in the game and you start in a weak position vs. Mexico.

No, but a war with Mexico in 1836 should be no problem for the US. It's not like they're on the level of the US, UK, France, or Prussia.

Don't rush to Mexican territory and you will do fine. Also, US army was quite weak historically, so yeah.

I quote this excellent post:

US Army did not run straight into the MExican army, they went around, via the navy, and took over the capitol, in an impressive flanking maneuver designed by General Winfield Scott, who came up with a similiar plan for the North to win the Civil War, but it was rejected in favor of a direct confrontation.

That man understood the importance of maneuver warfare about 100 years before Rommel.

Err, neither was the US. Its a war that Mexico could very well have won. The US got lucky IRL. The US was not a great power yet; in fact Mexico was the stronger state on paper by a fair margin.

So Im quite happy with this war begin easier for Mexico than the US.

Realitistically, just go for Romanticism first, get Manifest Destiny, and then steamroll Mexico.

All the while, get influence to Friendly, so you can put them in your SOI as soon as the war ends. :)

When I played the demo, it was the first time I had ever had any experience with any Victoria game. I didnt even do the tutorial, and I absolutely demolished Mexico from the start. i think the problem might be you.

And indeed it's not hard, at all, to beat Mexico as the US. It isn't impossible to build a strong army, the OP just apparently doesn't know how.

Yeah, I lost the war in my first game with the USA. Held Mexico to a white peace in my second and things got progressively better each time.

The main thing is that at first you have to fight a defensive war while funding your military to eventually raise more and more troops. To take the offensive, you also need good generals.

In my first HoI2 game, I was beaten by Poland as Germany. That doesn't mean Poland was overpowered in HoI2. ;)

In game-aspects:
Declare war on Texas and not Mexico,
grab a few provinces with the wargoal annex
and annex them before Mexico does.

And yes, the local recruitment feature is realistic but REALLY unhandy
when playing a huge empire (Russia or even Germany).

Yes, yes, the victory of the larger, more populaous, better educated, nation which didn't have its president seeking bribes from the invading army was totally ASB.

Besides Texas falling, I was able to get a historical outcome against Mexico without even focusing completely on military. I attacked them over Texas in 1846, and annexed all of the Manifest Destiny cores in 2 years (like real life).

I was very pleased with how this works, especially in comparison to Vic1.
