Im burgundy, war vs england, they occupied a colony not fully devolped in south america. Instead of just occupie it they took full control and I won war and could not claim it back. I think not being able to claim it was because I did not occupie it and I dont think I could put claims overseas etc.

But my question is how can they or I occupie colonies and take it without a peace deal?

thx for your time, I try to explain the best I can but it might not be fully clear plz ask if I missunderstand or should clerify.
Merry xmas

Remember that when you seize a colony, it counts against your colony limit. So if you have two colonists and both are active developing colonies and you seize a colony, your colonial maintenance will increase by four money. That can be an unwelcome surprise in the middle of a war. You can also burn a captured undeveloped colony down. Also on the screen if you click on the occupying army, you will see an icon action to burn colony. Burning it down returns it to uncolonized. Note that the former colonizer will likely start to colonize it again, so you can have fun, if the war goes on long enough of repeatedly burning it down.
