They cost one energy maintenacne per unit. All civilian ships do.
Especialyl early game, that 1 Maintenance will mater a lot.

Um, relative to losing a big fleet vs. an enemy you should not have engaged because he was more powerful than you thought, losing a single science or construction ship is definitely a better choice.

the problem with missiles is they have extremely low alpha damage(in that the time between firing and damage caused is so long their DPS suffers greatly). their damage is effectively delayed and damage that was in queue to kill a ship that get's destroyed vanishes. This overall makes missiles just a problem from any angle you attack them from unless you change how missiles physically behave in-game.

Missiles effectively turn into this kinda DoT with a delay on them. Honestly if they just increased their speed significantly they'd probably be reasonably fine. their niche is they rarely miss, which would stay if they just increased missile speed. This woudl also give PD less chance to shoot them down.

wasnt there a test a while ago? i think the result was, that speed doesnt affect the PD hit or miss ratio. When the missile is fired it is determined if a PD will destroy it or not, its just the effect and damage that is delayed

I mean...it never changes...
Actually war constantly changes. Tactics, Weapons, Goals, Resources.
Only that it does constantly change, never changes.

And that is how something that never changes, can change extremely changing and hard to understand at the same time.

The test I saw speed had a huge effect on it. Not always an intuitive effect, though (if you made them fast enough, PD got *better*).
