Okay I've just started a new game of Stellaris with megacorp and I've started a war, but despite beating the enemy fleet every time and having taken half their worlds we are somehow equal in war exhaustion despite them not doing any real damage to me. Anyone know why that is?

Casualties on your side will increase your war exhaustion. One thing that really hurts is if you invade worlds that are well-garrisoned and take a lot of troop casualties. If you can concentrate your fleets to take out their big starbases, it will also help reduce WE. You can then send out split fleets to take outposts.

Have any screenshots btw? That would help tremendously.

I just fought a war in which I have occupied about 1/3 of the galaxy (including planets) and I'm just barely at 50% WE.

Exhaustion comes from killing ships and killing armies, along with a passive ticking attrition. So occupied worlds or systems don't affect this total at all, only the ships or armies lost to take them. Ship loss is where the exhaustion comes from, not so much battles. If they're not losing many ships relative to their fleet size due to emergency jumps and such that too will keep their exhaustion relatively low. It's not like planets have many armies most of the time, so they won't lose much having them taken.

This is only partially true. If someone gets a colony occupied, the side that lost the colony will be gaining a steady amount of WE. This is essentially another ticking effect above attrition.

Also worth noting, the reduced attrition suffered by militarists can often be enough to win the war all by itself.

Furthermore, even though the comm won't do it, the player can refuse an unfavorable peace offer even once he has reached 100% WE if he has enough political influence to spend. You can probably not get away with this for long but it might by you time to retake a thing or two before the settlement.

Negative. Having a planet taken results in no additional war exhaustion. There is an additional occupation score that changes the willingness to make a peace, but that's not linked at all to war exhaustion. They're two different stats.

You should watch how the percentage is distribuited, it maybe be that it his losing battle but fewer ships than you
No, I killed a lot of his ships and he killed very few of mine its attrition that is jacking up my war exhaustion even though he didn't step into my territory or kill any stations.

No, I lost very few ships and lost very few soldiers during that war it was attrition that was increasing my war exhaustion so much. I don't have any screenshots sadly.

The attrition tick seems to be based on relative empire size, but the mechanics are not at all clear.

I didn't pay attention to how it works in 2.2, but isn't there a log of all the battles with how much exhaustion attackers/defenders got on the peace offer screen?

Looking at it might help to solve this...
