    Real Strategy Requires Cunning

This thread is more than 5 months old.

It is very likely that it does not need any further discussion and thus bumping it serves no purpose. If you feel it is necessary to make a new reply, you can still do so though.

Fire. Blood. Death. The artillery barrage rained over the entire city. Sergeant Damien Ross watched as the neighbouring building collapse under strain of the week long struggle. His squad numbered only three now. He new they would only number two soon.
"Stevenson" He rasped.
"Have you ever thought there is no God, Sarge? Why would God allow this dammed thing to happen?"
Damien would never get to respond. The artillery finally found its marker. Metal bent and broke, and the hotel building collapsed, crashing hard into the ground. Then, a bell. A classroom bell.

"Professor?" Only a dream, or rather a nightmare. "Class started ten minutes ago." The second day of school. IB Austrian History. Damien shook himself awake. Time to teach.

"As most of you know, the first semester of this class will be focused on the middle ages. We will specifically focus on the rulers of Austria, as the name of this class implies. We will start in 769, a year that will mark the dawn of a new power in Europe.

Chapter 1

Humble Beginnings

Our class shall begin in humble Passua, rule by Count Janus, a master of statesmanship. Count Janus had risen to power by assassinating his brother, and feared a similar fate, and thus hid himself from all combat and trusted no one. He had a young son that he would name his heir, and would tutor him in all matters of state.
AAR 1.1.PNG

However, Janus knew that he would need advisers, whether or not they were trustworthy. He searched his entire realm (two counties) for a skilled physician.
AAR 1.2.PNG

Janus's lord had recently inherited a large track of land from the neighbouring realm of King Karloman. This new land would allow Janus's liege to protect his vassal from the pagans of the East.
AAR 1.3.PNG

Janus's quest with a pilgrim named Emmerich, the name sake of the modern Vienna Hospital. He would help take care of Janus until his later years of life.
AAR 1.4.PNG

Janus was a greedy sort, though was smart when it came to matters of economy. While he new debasing the mints could lead to a huge loss of reputation, he required the gold for future projects in his realm
AAR 1.5.PNG

Janus would man a trade expedition for the money to carry out other such projects as well.
AAR 1.6.PNG

Janus's voyage would lead him to Great Poland, were great riches were made due to his statesmanship skills
AAR 1.7.PNG

Janus's first wife was named Adelinde, and would bring Janus his second son.
AAR 1.8.PNG

Adelinde was a greedy woman like her husband, but was also patient and humble, virtues Janus envied.
AAR 1.9.PNG

With money Janus had made on his economic ventures, he would begin expanding the royal castle.
AAR 1.10.PNG

A change of events took place however when Janus was granted the Duchy of Austria by his lord. This act of charity would change Janus's life, as from then on he would face the world head on, take chances, and give to people in need.
AAR 1.11.PNG

In the year of our lord 778, on April 14, Adelinde would die of Pneumonia that she caught in childbirth.
AAR 1.12.PNG

Janus mourned her, but soon recovered and attacked the Count of Innsbruck for the County of Steiermark.
AAR 1.13.PNG

Janus would rout the defenders to barbarian lands, were many of his enemies would die of disease of starvation.
AAR 1.14.PNG

Janus would contract the flu during the campaign, forcing him to return home.
AAR 1.15.PNG

Though Emmerich would treat his liege with skill, possibly saving his life.
AAR 1.16.PNG

Janus's skill and luck would lead to him being called the Bewitched, which would be an ominous foreshadowing of future events.
AAR 1.17.PNG

The final battle of the war was bloody a skirmish that would lead huge death among the population of Vienna, Nevertheless, this was the final blow to the enemy.
AAr 1.18.PNG

The war was now over. Janus had won.
AAR 1.19.PNG

Janus was now free to complete his construction goals, leading to mass population growth.
AAR 1.20.PNG

The realm had grown, and Austria was prospering. But clouds were growing on the horizons. Storm clouds.

You have a long time to make Austria a significant power. Are you going for straight-up conquest or setting yourself other goals?

I plan to form an HRE consisting of Italy, Sicily, Germany, Saxony, Bohemia, Bavaria, Frisia, Lotharingia, Pomerania, Burgundy, and Venice. These goals should take me enough time for a major foe to emerge. I am not that good at this game, so overextension should be solved by natural rebellions.

Chapter 2

The Tears of a Father, The Pains of a Sufferer, and The Hoof Beats of Horses

Now, in the reading pages I assigned you should have read about the Abbasid and Umayyad Dynasties and the empires they ruled. Now we shall return to Austria, where Duke Janus's economic reform continue to strength the nation. Meanwhile, Janus's Chancellor discovers the "true" will of the late count of Karnten, promising the county of Janus. The Duke of course seizes the opportunity, and the county.

AAR 1.21.PNG

In Passau Janus's statesmanship skills bear fruit, as the population of the county booms.

AAR 1.22.PNG

Meanwhile Janus decide to introduce his heir, Landolf, to the realm, getting him the best teachers and scholars in the duchy to educate his on ruler-ship. No expense was to much for Janus when it came to his son.

AAR 1.23.PNG

But disaster struck, and Janus's first born and protege was killed by pneumonia. For a full year Janus would mourn his son.

AAR 1.24.PNG

In his great depression, another tragedy would strike Austria.

AAr 1.25.PNG

AAR 1.26.PNG

Janus had developed Cancer.

AAR 1.27.PNG

The cancer that Janus had was quite mild, and he would rule for many more years, but it was only due to the genius of Emmerich that the cancer was identified, much less successfully treated.

AAR 1.28.PNG

Emmerich would spend day and night caring for his lord.

AAR 1.29.PNG

While his methods were unorthodox, they were successful. Thanks Emmerich's efforts, Janus's liege would allow him to join the council, but as the Marshall, not the Steward.

AAR 1.30.PNG

But in the dreadful hour, a son was born. The realm still had hope.

AAR 1.31.PNG

As the cancer grew worse and the memory of his wife and son reemerged, Janus would sink into a deep depression.

AAR 1.32.PNG

Despite his physical, emotional and mental state, Janus continued to bring prosperity to the realm

AAR 1.33.PNG

Janus wold continue to store money for future construction projects

AAR 1.34.PNG

Janus's second wife, an economic genius, but less important to our studies, would die, giving new meaning to Janus's title, "the Bewitched" for all he loved and owned died. Many peasants of Vienna wondered if it was a matter of time before Austria collapsed under the Anniona curse.

AAR 1.37.PNG

Janus would spend his time of depression over his 2 wives and son's death in seclusion, building an observatory to gaze at the heavens, possibly to catch a last glance at his shattered family before he fell to his cancer and joined them.

AAR 1.38.PNG

His pastime soon became a hobby, which became a love, and then an obsession. He would spend all night gazing at the stars, sleeping during the days, leading many superstition people believing Janus the Bewitched was now a vampire.

AAR 1.39.PNG

However, while Janus was spending a fortune in his studies gazing at the sky, in distant lands a great storm was brewing...

AAR 1.40.PNG

And it would change the world.

Chapter 3

Under Bulgar Hoof

Hi, I'm Jake Blue and this is Cram Class Austrian History, and today we're going to talking about here (spins globe, misses the black sea and instead hits Japan. Looks to see were he pointed) Not my best work.

*Intro song plays while animated important Austrian historical events flash by, each with some text containing fun facts.*

Now last time we talked about Austria's and to a greater extent, the West's trading with the tribes of the east. Now today we will be talking about Ukraine and the Balkans.

"Mr. Blue! Mr. Blue! Why would we talk about those guys? This is Austrian History."

Oh me from the past, you can be so ignorant. Now Janus would continue conqueror his fellow vassals, as well as centralise his realm. These actions, while strengthening Austria, would severely destabilise Bavaria.

AAR 3.1.PNG

Janus would also invest in massive economic projects, one of which was a 10 foot statue of solid iron, which still stands today. However, while prestigious, they nearly bankrupted the country, which would also destabilise the realm.

AAR 3.2.PNG

But as Bavaria waned, Austria boomed.

AAR 3.3.PNG

But this prosperity would make Austria a prime target of Viking invasion, which would become more and more common after 800 CE

AAR 3.4.PNG

Bavaria's instability would lead to the King converting to the Fraticelli heresy

AAR 3.5.PNG

Meanwhile, Janus would continue his studies of the stars

AAR 3.6.PNG

AAR 3.7.PNG

AAR 3.9.PNG

However, while Austria's king was quite intelligent by all accounts, his doctor treated his cancer with more questionable cures. His court surgeon would die in 817 CE

AAR 3.8.PNG

AAR 3.11.PNG

Though overshadowing all of these events was the publishing of The Solar Papers, which said that the Earth actually revolved around the sun, much to the anger of the pope. However, despite this religious backlash, if anything historical documents point to Janus believing his findings only proved that the Christian God existed, a such complexity could only have been achieved by a divine being.

AAR 3.12.PNG

Life was peaceful in prosperous Austria, with Janus introducing his heir Berthold to the realm as well as celebrating the birth of a daughter.

AAR 3.13.PNG

AAR 3.14.PNG

Of course, Janus wouldn't let a little party get in the way of conquering more territory.

AAR 3.16.PNG

However, this constant war would lead to a large peasant revolt which would end with 250 dead farmers and miners and 100 dead soldiers.

AAR 3.17.PNG

AAR 3.18.PNG

Another daughter was born, and the realm flourished.

AAR 3.19.PNG

But in a brilliant term of events a deranged drunkard somehow discover the source of Janus's cancer: His Hand. It was immediately cut off in a incredibly bloody operation which almost killed the ageing Janus.

AAR 3.15.PNG

AAR 3.20.PNG

But of course, seeing the instability of Bavaria, King Yectirek of the Bulgar tribe invaded Bavaria, completely conquering it, which reminds me its time for the open letter.

An open letter to conquering. Hey conquering its me, Jake Blue, and while I both admire and hate you're work, it is often puzzling to me what you do after you succeed. Most ruler either forcefully integrate their new subjects, unless you are the Mongols

*Mongoltage plays*

And that usually results in a huge rebellion that forces you to have to conqueror your enemies all over again, which is really inefficient. Best wishes, Jake Blue.

AAR 3.21.PNG

Anyways, Janus, as always disregarded any danger to the kingdom until it was unstoppable, instead spending time educating his son.

AAR 3.23.PNG

As I said before, the Bulgar Horde conquered Bavaria, and then promptly began exploiting them for their own needs.

AAR 3.24.PNG

However, while the Bulgar king was oppressive, Catholicism was never rooted out of these lands.

AAR 3.25.PNG

And in a moment that could only be described as hilarious, the conquerors of Bavaria were or the Tengri, who had been emboldened by the reformation of their faith to then go and conquer the west. This only goes to show that destiny has a deranged sense of humour.

AAR 3.26.PNG

The genius of the drunkard continued to amaze Austria, who would also discover early treatments for dysentery and influenza.

AAR 3.27.PNG

In West Karloman, the brother of the late king of West Francia, Karl, formed the empire of Francia, uniting all of western Catholic mainland Europe.

AAR 3.28.PNG

While the drunkard could cure cancer, he couldn't cure syphilis.

AAR 3.29.PNG

Under the tyranny of the Bulgar king, Janus's kindness would disappear.

AAR 3.30.PNG

Join us next time, when we discuss the death of the founder of the Anniona dynasty and war of independence war on the horizon. And remember, don't forget to be awesome.

*White board video cuts out*

Class is over folks. Remember, your essay comparing our first ruler and our current glorious premier is due tomorrow. See you all tomorrow.

Thanks for the support. Karloman really changes everything. Right now the Kingdoms of Hungary, Bulgaria and Khazaria are all allied and reformed Tengri, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them inherits the others, forever blocking me out of Panniona

Power blocs are forming...

The French have already the Umayyads in Barcelona if you look closely, and the Tengri block often raids the Byzantines. How will the Austria rebellion affect Europe?

hmmmm time to conquer the Bavarian Crown for yourself? and kick those heathen out of your lands too

Why be the King of Bavaria, when you can be the King of Austria? And quite right about those heathens, but sadly I lack military tactics 4, so no major offensives yet.

what about being King of Austro-Bavaria? don't let the Austrian and Bavarian lands grow apart like in OTL

Right after the Bulgar Horde conquered Bulgaria the old Franticelli King declared independence, taking his holdings in South Germany, which hilariously did not include any counties in Bavaria. But I will most likely keep Bavaria around as a loyal vassal after the formation of the HRE, a loyalist stronghold controlling the duchies of Alemania, Baden and Bavaria AKA the south German federation lands. Fear not, Bavarian and Austrian will be brothers forever!!!

Chapter 4

War of the Horizon

Hello dear students. Sadly, due to the attack on the Ministry of Defence and the loss of school days due to that terrorism, we will have to skip over the formation of the Austrian independence league and skip directly to the war. Do not worry though, the league will be removed from your semester exam. When we left off we were discussing the king's failing heath after the amputation of his hand.

AAR 3.31.PNG

With his newfound respect for medicine he would spend a small fortune to build hospitals in his entire realm.

AAR 3.32.PNG

However he would die in a month, and a massive succession crisis would begin

AAR 3.36.PNG

His successor also had cancer, and was a weak king...

AAR 3.33.PNG

AAR 3.34.PNG

But this didn't prevent him from fighting and killing his brother and seizing his land, ending the first of the many succession conflicts to come.

AAR 3.35.PNG

AAR 3.37.PNG

He executed his brother as soon as he had won the war.

AAR 3.38.PNG

AAR 3.39.PNG

Berthold would then die during a operation to remove his cancer in his arm, and a second succession crisis began as his first son, just 15, inherited the throne.

AAR 3.40.PNG

He soon reached maturity, the damage had been done. After the civil war he was the only living male Anniona alive.

AAR 3.42.PNG

His wife princess Romylia of the Byzantine Empire would soon reach maturity, and the wed on the winter solstice.

AAR 4.3.PNG

Okors, Alberich's uncle on his mother's side, reached maturity, and became a good friend to his king.

AAR 4.4.PNG

Alberich then began plan an independence league, and attracted all of the still christian Bavarian counts.

AAR 4.5.PNG

Alberich secured more rights for the Bavarians, but it was not enough for him.

AAR 4.7.PNG

He wanted to be free

No problem. Is your current ruler descended from Bulgarians?

His mom was the first daughter of the King of Avaria, who went through a 6 month Christian phase, which I took advantage of in the hopes in taking over the Huns. I was ... unsuccessful, as shown by my Bulgarian subjugation.
