  • Crusader Kings II
Hi, I was a Design analyst for a couple of years before being laid off. My old boss is really into crusader kings 2 (being a RTS Fan, I figured I would give it a shot.)
After logging about 163 hours in over the last few weeks I figured I would submit a few ideas.

Mass Effect 3, War Assets.
This is a system I think would work very well in Crusader kings 2. It would add a little more flavor, and options to the game, while keeping it simple and Ui Based.

This could range from adding Heroic soldiers to adding entire regiments, (which could even be historically accurate like William Wallace for example) or relics, this could be added to your personal retinue or to the character sheet.

Let’s start with the heroic soldiers/regiments.
This option would you to keep the soldier in the army adding a bonus to the units damage, add the asset to the generals own body guard unit, or even promote the general by granting land and titles.

Relics
Relics could range from a famous crusader's sword or armor, or a famous painting or book. (options are pretty limitless here)
This would allow you to add the relic to your generals Card adding a bonus to the primary stats, or monthly piety etc..

These items could also be used for ransom or rewarding your nobles.

Yes to champions :), becoming landless characters in the game, knights or lords. I used to put in certain famous characters, but having assets without land that can form after great battles etc sounds interesting. Also I had the idea that religious artefacts would be prime war targets, so that would fit a bit of what you are speaking about.

We already have Inca's invading, we don't need super hero samurai units in CK2. I do like the Relic idea, but IIRC Paradox decided to scrap that before release due to time issues.

1st, William Wallace was a minor noble, not a lowly landless peasant imprinted into the general public mind by Brave Heart.
2nd, there's already an event fired randomly that promote a soldier for heroic deed in battle, i.e. granting you a soldier courtier.
3rd, the relic bits sound like some great. Relics could be made into traits that can only be acquired by specific events.

One of the main factors of the film was portraying nobles as evil, which tends to resonate well with American audiences, particularly as they tried to link the Scottish Wars of Independence with the American War of Independence.

As for the war assets : I believe some mods already do this? I Know that the Britannia mod (Based on The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell) has Excalibur as a trait specific to Arthur, and Ice is specific to rulers of House Stark in the AGOT mod. Perhaps the important thing is to enable people to steal relics from one another, in the same way that you can kidnap in CK2+ etc. Throw in the fact that they could be lost on the battlefield, and so on and so forth.

What'd be extra-wonderfully awesome would be that some of them would be kept in your capital, and if your capital is held for too long by the enemy, they could be discovered in the vaults and taken away from you. Forces you to really keep your capital safe.

I don't see what kind of bonus could give a relic outside of piety or moral bonus, if we try to be realistic. However, great character, should be able to spawn (Johan of Arc etc.), but they should not have any "super power", just good stats and maybe some bonuses. However, those historical figure are very tied up with what was happening, you know it is time of difficulty which reveal great man. Most probably if your game diverge totally there is no reason for them to spawn and other non-historical figure should spawn, but it a lot less fun.

Right im not saying these people or units should be stomping everything in sight. Im saying you add a named knight to your retinue and it adds a little personality to it. Or you have had a unit for 200 years, maybe it could be awarded a special name with some minor boosts. They already sort of do this with each personal retinue having a historical unit. So the tech is already there to add to it. In ME3 warassets didnt play a huge factor in the game, but they were fun to read about and collect.

I still don't understand why they didn't just include that in the story - it wouldn't have taken away from any of his exploits.

Because it was an American movie about Scottish history, filmed in Ireland and starring an Australian in the lead role (as well as directing)?

It's about as historically accurate as Team America World Police (and a lot less entertaining).

Next you're going to tell me that they left the bridge out of the Battle of Stirling Bridge. ;)

Paradox had some ideas about relics but later scrapped them along with playable muslims and a few other things because they didn't have time. hopefully we will get them with DLC's. They also said something about the relics being used to build cathedrals and stuff, with cathedrals probably being super-curches/buildings giving some bonuses.
