War and prestige

I'm sure this has been asked many times before but I couldn't find a live thread that explains this:

How much prestige does each type of war cost you? It'd be really handy if a pop-up box would tell you before dowing especially when event driven as I didn't realise some events cost you prestige depending upon what you press!

I'm playing a game as UK and despite a cost to prestige of circa 100 for dowing Assam by event the peace settlement told me I'd get just 1 prestige point back (a bit miserly); however, on agreeing peace I received much more than 1 point - I don't know how many in total.

Does anyone know the maths for all of this?

Wars cost prestige depending on your power and prestige level relitive to your target. It can cost up to 100 or be as low as 1. The exception is when your target has under -100 prestige, then it always costs 1 point to DoW them. You can also get a hefty prestige penalty if you have troops inside their border, or they inside yours when you DoW.

When making peace vs civilized countries your prestige gain is your WS - the cost of any land you claim, so to get the most prestige from a war get 100% WS and then don't take any land, get a white peace or take WI etc. When making peace vs uncivilized countries your prestige gain is capped at about 5, so you should only attack them to take land.

Acutally, though most countries start with zero prestige, many great powers start with something like fifteen.

Just to tidy up a couple of things: The prestige cost for a DOW is visible in the confirmation box, just in case you would change your mind. Also, annexing uncivilized nations give five prestige per province.

Lee is just mutilating the words "Robespierre", "dethrone" and "anarchy" to underscore the point that he is a man of the working class, with all the educational deficiencies inherent thereto.
