I am one of the defenders, though a more quiet one. I love HoI 3 very much, I am having a lot of fun with it.
Still, some things bug me. I hope those bugs get fixed. I like the game so much more than HoI2, it flows so much better.
In HoI2 I am constantly pausing to click through the intelligence and diplomacy tab because I have massed too much money I can use to influence some countries. It just feels like a necessaty, not like fun.
In HoI3, I really love the influence system, the triangle. I love the threat system, at least when playing as Germany. Keeping countries neutral via influence and by increasing the threat of France and the UK just works.
The map is so much better, I love the provinces. I am microing all my units, though. So I don't use the theatre AI.
For me it's an amazing game. I play it every week and I check back constantly to see if new user mods are out or if 1.4 has been released.
Of course it was a borked release with some obvious bugs. Like the broken weather system.
But still I rather take all the bugs and problems and end up with a product of the scope HoI3 is.
And some complaints I read in some threads are just.... bad. Like not having a fourth faction called "neutral". With a fourth corner in the triangle.
I don't know what people were expecting. But after HoI2 (that I still play, I got my HoI2 few days before release of HoI3 because I got it as a preorder gift), HoI3 by far exceeded my expectations and hopes. I mean I didn't play it a lot until 1.3. It had too many problems, so I played HoI2. But I considered HoI3 to be the better game and I knew it would be great after some patches and possible expansions.
HoI3 was a courageous step, and I am glad they took it. The only things I like more in HoI2 are the working air defense and the invasion AI being more active. But this will probably be fixed soon.
If all bugs are fixed, HoI3 will be "my" game. I can play it for years to come, the way I did with XCom. I played that forever. Thousands of hours went in Ufo Defense. I am twice as old now compared to the time xcom was released, and this is the first game since ufo defense of which I can think to really invest my free time in.
