So I was going for the Little Entente achievement which failed horribly because Germany "Danzigged" Poland (should've let them lose...) but later as I was hoping World Tension would spike a chain of events occurred resulting in me having volunteer units on both sides of a war:

6BEED83B30379CB0BE7E9F8D4B9D3BCD9BB89C5D

Chain of events: Italy Axis (Italy+Bulgaria) DOW on Allies. I send volunteers to UK and Greece. Japan joined Italian Axis while still fighting China. Soviet warmongering period begins: DOW on Afghanistan, then Japan and Axis, then Iraq. Send Volunteers to Iraq to increase WT and stem red tide. Iraq joins Axis, Iraqi war merged with Axis-Comintern war and Axis-Allies war and end up with Volunteers on both sides with no option to recall. Some months later Italy and Bulgaria capitulated and my UK and Greece volunteers deploy in Egypt and push back to Iraqi borders, during this time my volunteers in Iraq have been holding the two ports on the Iraqi coast killing thousands of allied would-be naval invaders, I never did see if I could fight myself which I regret (no chance either now, ironman), but Iraq capitulated and those volunteers finally got to go home. Afterwards, funny but unrelated: Romania turned Fascist, left my faction, joined Axis, immediately got devoured by both Allied and Comintern forces.

Dear Paradox, probably need an option to recall volunteers.

This is like the US selling weapons to both Iran and Iraq, only taken to the next level :D .

I'm of two minds here. I suppose there are wars where people have volunteered to fight for both sides. There are people leaving Europe to fight both for and against the IS, for instance, and I always thought part of sending volunteers was gaining XP and getting experience for your divisions.

I suppose volunteers in HOI4 are more of an official/state-sanctioned volunteers, though, which makes it all a bit more complicated. I guess if volunteers end up deployed in countries that fight each other, there should be the option to recall them if you want to

the CTV made a move to end the war quickly and it almost worked. because of the nationalist loss in this battle, the war would drag on for years...

Just a little tip: When going for Big Entente you might want to let the Commies take over in France (enough events to get them over 50% by 1937 if you're lucky), so that you can send volunteers to Spain (again, if you're lucky with the events and rep spain holds on for long enough) and get your war machine running faster. You'll still be able to complete the Little Entente tree. This way (and with a bit of Peace Conference acrobatics) I just this evening managed to get the achievement.

Also, with the Peace Conference, make sure to create a puppet Germany and Austria in the first round (or else the Allies will) and get Memel, Sudetenland and Konigsberg as quickly as possible (in that order); in today's case, after that nobody claimed anymore of Germany's cores in the conference so I could take them all eventually.

You won't need TfV for this by the way. Good luck!

I found in one game, a way to recall some volunteers.

Not your own volunteers though, only your puppet's volunteer forces.

request control over your puppet's forces, all of them, and you will be given control over the volunteer divisions, which are now in your theatres. You can then "disband" them, which returns control to your puppet. But they won't rejoin the conflict, instead, they'll be exiled divisions of your puppet, and will probably take a while to get back to your puppet's territory.

Bit bizarre, really.

There is a general problem with volunteer forces - they are (only) send by a state. Which is bad and inaccurate. States should only send expedition corps. HoI 2 spawned shitty militias, which made a lot more sense.

It's more likely a design oversight and not deliberate. I'm pretty Europa Universalis IV had an issue similar to this that was eventually fixed.
