Other people shared their work too.

Hello,

One of the feature I like about this game is the automatic translation of the local name of the province to the language of its new owner. I confess that I did learn a few things with this feature.

However, this tool is still quite limited and even obvious conquests (such as Maghreb for Spain, or Italy/Germany for France are forgotten). This is the reason why I manually do it when I play... but can't do it for the AI.

This is the reason why I offer my free services to suggest new provinces names for some cultures. Teaching international relations in a renowned university, I can provide any documents needed to prove my qualifications to the team. I am sure other players would likely volunteer too.

If it is not possible then, too bad! In any case, I could help modders create a database for this idea.

Have a nice day.

You can just make a list of all dynamic province names (that's how they are called) you want to be added to the game along with provinces' IDs and someone from the devs should notice it and add it... in a few patches. You can use debug_mode command to see provinces' IDs while in game.

You can find files with already existing dynamic province names for specific cultures in "/common/province_names/" folder.

So, I began to work.
Here are 349 new french names for provinces. It does more than double the number of dynamic provinces for a french ruler and should give you more flavour to your games. This list is not exhaustive : it is as exhaustive as I could make it.
Allow me to introduce my methodology :
- I did NOT change any dynamic provinces already in the game.
- I would say that about half of these names are today archaic. Contemporary French people do translate the names of capital cites and the names of most italian, spanish, german, arab and greek cities/provinces (so these ones should be still used in contemporary french). The archaic names I added to the game were the names that were mostly used until the beginning of nineteenth century (using old maps, books and dictionnaries). When an archaic romanization was at the time less used than the untampered name of the province, I did NOT change it. Sometimes, several different names were used during the timeframe of the game, I chose the most popular one at the time.
- When a province name was not known in France at the time (especially for the hungarian counties) AND when the name of the biggest city mentioned in the game had a french translation, I translated the name of the county into the French name of the city.
- For some provinces, the name under which they were known in the tameframe of the game was not the local name but their german, italian, spanish or portuguese version. In those cases, I used the relevant foreign name (mostly german names in Eastern Europe for example).
- When reffering to the historical Ottoman Empire, during the game timeframe, most French people were using the byzantine names of the cities and provinces. This was not always true ; and I applied this rule only when I found sufficient use of the byzantine names when speaking about modern times (about a third of anatolian provinces). The other times, I applied the romanization of the turkish/arabic/persian... name that was used at the time or did nothing when I found that local names were used correcty at the time.
- For french trading posts and colonies, I changed the local name of the province to the one of the harbour created/owned by the French at the time, since it made sense French people would be using the name of the city they knew and controlled, as they historically did, for example, in Saint-Louis du Sénégal. This is especially true for Africa and India. I chose not to do it for Tunis (province 341), where La Goulette (a european fortress) could have been used instead of the more famous arab city.
- I did not translate many names in the New World, not being sure where the cities, whose French name are known, were located, because of the employ of native names.

You are welcome to discuss any choice I made. Unless the developers integrate my work into the game, I think it would be possible to copy/paste directly the content of my file into the file named "french" located in "/common/province_names/" folder.

I will rest for a while before translating provinces names to other languages.

Most names I included are just Hungarian versions of the original names like Rome - Róma and so on, for the more in-depth changes I tried to search historical names for the province names. Many hungarian wikipedia articles mention the medieval names as well:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donji_Kraji for Donji Kraji
or https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlora for Vlore/Avlonya
or https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandomierz for Sandomierz
or this one https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lviv for Lviv/Lemberg
and so on, but there can be found other sources as well,
https://books.google.sk/books?id=7D...ECAQQAQ#v=onepage&q=barancs branicevo&f=false
like this one for Branicevo

The most debatable ones among my suggestions are Kosovo - Rigómező (refers to Kosovo Polje, although there are 2 major battles in history which are referred to as Battle of Rigómező, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kosovo and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kosovo_(1448)) and Tirgoviste - Munténia because this covers basically the two eastern provinces of Wallachia. (if this name is not appropriate Tergovistye could be used)

It's very fine to me. I just ask because sometimes people use the modern name of the city/couny in the dynamic language (since people nowadays are less racist than they were before), which would then be anachronical in the game's timeframe.
For Tirgoviste, it's pretty acceptable since the game already does it in vanilla mode, using a historical province name for a province tile that is smaller than it. As for Kosovo, I don't master hungarian, so I can't judge for myself and will rely on your opinion. For France, I checked on old maps what names were used at the time. But I don't know if hungarian was much of a printed language until the 19th century, because of the ottoman/austrian rule over the local elite...

Hello everyone.

Here are 365 new castilian names. My metholodogy was the same as for the french language. The names here will less archaic, as modern spanish romanizes more foreign names than modern french, but some of these names are still archaic today (discovered in old maps and encyclopedies).

Also, french names have grown a bit (including now a lot of colonial islands not translated before. You can find below updated 466 french names.

IMPORTANT : as usual, these names have to be added to the ones already present in game. My list does not include the ones already in the game and I chose not to contest the choices already made by the game.

Sounds neat! Do you mind if I use these in my own mod, giving credit ofc?
