Auto Union was a major German automotive player in the 30s. It was formed from the amalgamation of four independent auto manufacturers (Audi, Horch, Wanderer, and DKW(?)) and for a time rivalled Mercedes (Daimler Benz) as the pre-eminent quality manufacturer and design innovator.

It was certainly much better staffed and equipped than the fledgling Volkswagen concern.
