It gets better. Annex the natives, release them as vassals of your religion then sell them colonies. They will pay to grow them for you, then when you integrate your vassals, their colonies are your culture, your religion and your core.

To do that, don't you have to convert their capital province to your religion first?

Annex them and release them as a vassal. You have to do this to get fleet basing rights of the Maya and to get early cores of conquered territory. Send a diplomat to them to get fleet basing rights.

I'm wanting to do something similar as England to kick-start early colonization of North America (i.e. before level 7 DIP), and am about to DoW the Creek, but the above is the bit I'm not 100% sure about. Could you clarify a few points:

1) I assume you need to get fleet-basing rights off your vassal in order to be able to core your conquered provinces, but don't understand the mechanics behind this - can you only core provinces within a certain naval and/or colonial range?

2) I assume you can't just force vassal (as oppossed to releasing a vassal) your Native American enemy, as they will be too low-tech to give you fleet basing rights?

What I've done (as England, also curia controller...) is do call a crusade on the Creek, then DoW - I still get the -2 hit for no CB (as don't neightbour them yet), but the extra income helps to fund 100% land maintenance. Once I've occupied *all* 4 of their provinces, should I then annex them in one go (assuming they're small enough to do this), then release immediately as a vassal (with my tech levels)? What religion will they be? Will I still get to keep some of their proivinces if I release them as a vassal? I want a coastal one, preferabl bordering Cherokee, so I can Fabricate a claim on them too or use the Holy War CB

Don't fix it. Its one of the few things you can do as an OPM that can be semi fun. Its tough atm expanding.

They seem pretty determined to prevent fun, so it will be removed.

The colonial game in general is very uncompetitive - you can expand almost unimpeded if you are in the right position even playing the game "straight", and there is little early competition in the first century. The classical approach is colony in W Africa / colony in Brazil / leapfrog to Carribean. The only limiters are fleet basing rights and geography.

Yeah, AI Norway still grants Fleet Basing rights to all and sundry. It's a nice trick to take advantage of, because the other AI never seem to notice this. The result is that my Novgorod covers the entire top third of the globe - all of modern Russia, Alaska, and Canada.

3. Start a war with someone, get sieged and offer them your capital.
You now have your capital in America and it's like 1455.

I'm fairly sure it will be fixed, but you can probably do the same thing just a little bit later/differently.

That's not going to help the Knights reach the Seven Cities of Gold :p
