Life After Revolution (1783-1829)

A brief Union of States in America existed from 1782-1785. All states except the neutral Republic of Vermont took part. The bitterness and arguments among the member states were so hostile and so divisive that the union quickly fell apart. In its place rose the Society of Independent Republics.

The SOIR was a pact of the original Union of States members which they agreed upon mutual defense in the face of a common aggressor, and would meet every 3 months to discuss eachother's affairs and internal matters. Because of it's central location Virginia was chosen as the "capital" of this organization.

The most important part of the organization was the Council of United Affairs. Which would make united decisions based on vote tallies amongst the representatives. These matters could only apply to war against foreign aggressors against the whole of the society.

The Republic Vermont maintained observer status and 1 honorary vote in the Council of United Affairs.

The Rise of Alexander Mason in Georgia (1829-1835)

It had been only decades since the Revolution. Under President John Reed the Republic of Georgia had prospered economically and militarily. So much so the Republic of Georgia in 1829 rallied support among the SOIR to approve the invasion of the now faltering Spanish Florida, which had already been almost overrun by Natives and American settlers.

With the Society's approval, Georgia's finest general; Alexander Mason, and 5,000 brave militiamen invaded Florida. Within weeks the entirety of the colony was controlled and annexed. Spain agreed to the Treaty of Montpelier, in which Georgia would pay a one time sum for the colony. President Reed was at his most powerful position ever, and never expected his top general to run against him in the coming election.

Upon his arrival back in Georgia, Alexander Mason gathered many influential Georgian businessmen to bankroll his new political party. It would come to be named "The Continental Unionists Party." The idea behind the fledgling party was radical. A union of all the independent states that formed the SOIR into a great nation under Georgian hegemony.

This caused a vast and powerful wave of support for Mason's campaign. The election was a landslide. The Unionists won a super majority of seats, enough to impose any law they wished. With Mason's control of the military anyone who opposed the Unionists would be dealt with harshly.

The degeneration of the once proud Georgian Republic was quick and concise. The order of events which happened were tragic for democracy.
_________________

1) The National Judiciary Act: Gave the President the exclusive power to dismiss and hire Supreme Court justices. All of the Federal Party judges were removed and replaced with sympathetic Unionist judges.

2) Defense of the Republic Act: On the surface, this bill abolished the Militia, and founded the first standing army in the region. However, placed inside the bill was the ability to arrest any Dissidents who opposed the "Defense of the Republic" and its Unionist goals.

3) Total abolition of Democracy: By 1835 Alexander Mason has outlawed any form of democracy, after a vote of public approval passed with a questionable 95% approval rating.
_________________

Mason followed up by quickly occupying and annexing contested territories under negotiations, and invading the Carolinas, which forced them into a quick peace deal to salvage their nation.

The Society of Independent Republics knew it had to move fast. Any percieved kink in the loose confederation of allies would be very advantageous to the United Kingdom, which was growing ever more strong as every day passed. As the capital of the SOIR, and Chair member of the Defense Committee, Virginia began preperations for an invasion of Georgia.

That's it so far. I have chosen to not use any historical leaders from the US, as I think it adds constraints to a fantasy story. There will be a very dynamic sort of events. I might can the Federation of Frontiersmen idea for a simple colony claiming setup. Ideas?

A State Visit

Louis watched the parade with his wife quite contently. He was not used to this type of thing in Louisiana. Louisiana was a fine place indeed, but the weather was far too hot for parades in full military gear. The King was in Virginia to commerorate his father's assistance to the American rebels decades before.

The good king was 51. His son, the Dauphin, Louis XVIII and his daughter Therese were with him on this journey.

President Marion was just behind the Royal family. He leaned in to the King to inquire on his trip so far; "I trust you are enjoying yourself your highness?"

"Mr Marion, you have been all to kind to me and my family. It joys me to see what good my father and the brave sons of France did in helping you in your struggle against the English agressors!" he smiled and patted Marion's arm.

"Well hopefully, we can help you. Your Prime Minister Dubois and I would like to discuss proposals for you in regards to the Georgia problem,"

The King turned around worried. "What is it you are planning Mr. President?"

"It shall be discussed tonight over dinner at the Republican Mansion. For now let us view with pride the combined military arms of the Kingdom of France and the Republic of Virginia"

The King nodded and turned back to the festivities, all the while worried of waht is being negotiated in his name. Never has the Kingdom of Louisiana engaged in military combat with her neighbors.
_________________

Dubois was a fine Prime Minister. He was aged 68, and had lived in the Americas all his life. He was present for the King's Baton Rouge coronation, and is a loyal but firm minister for HM Louis XVII.

"We are prepared to offer the Kingdom of Loui-" Dubois quickly cut him off.

"You are prepared to offer the Kingdom of France what?" he quipped back at President Marion.

"My mistake... we are prepared to offer the Kingdom of France full control of Mississippi in return for the aide of our French brothers in the impdending conflict with the Republic of Georgia"

The King, who had been listening quietly in his chair spoke up "Are we sure of my nations preparedness for combat against the Georgians? We have but a few militia regiments! Georgia has a standing army!"

"Your highness, as you know the Republic of Virginia has many fine generals in it's employ, and as you know no nation on this earth recognises your crown over France, or Louisiana for that matter. Now I mean no disrespect of course, and I am willing to offer you Mississippi, the training of an effective fighting force, and Virginian recognition of your control of Louisiana in return for your support of our fight against Georgia." the President was sure and steady in his diplomatic approach.

"Your Majesty, this is a crucial moment for us. If we take the crown of Louisiana, and abandon our claims on France, we can have the full recognition of the Virginian republic, and an army, and more territory. You can see why I called this meeting..." Dubois was fully in support of his American colleague.

The king was no fool. He knew a good deal when he saw one. "This is a deal that I cannot refuse. I have one condition however. I want you to know, I will never give up my claims of my homeland. My love for my subjects, and my home soil is deeper than any roots I can plant here. But I accept your offer..."

Dubois raised his glass of Bourbon, "Very well! A toast to the alliance of Louisiana and Virginia. May we crush our enemies and bring freedom to the opressed!"

Interesting, nicely set up. I wonder how it'll effect immigration later on.

One nitpick- Vermont wasn't actually a state during part of the timeline, it got its independence from New York.

Wow, this is a very cool aar. Looking forward to following this in the future.

Is there a story behind why Maryland, Rhode Island, and Connecticut are no longer republics or why Maine is part of New Hampshire instead of Massachusetts? Were North and South Carolina still separate republics before the Georgian invasion or did they form a union at some point? These aren't criticisms, I'm just curious if you'll be revealing other little tidbits of past happenings in future installments.

One last question, how does slavery factor into the picture? Is there a strong abolitionist movement in the northeastern republics or in the Western parts of Virginia?

I think that the Federation of American Fronteirsmen is somewhat silly as those areas had pretty low populations. I think a colony claiming setup would be better.

Who replaced the USA (and will therefore get its immigration bonus)? It will be interesting to see a game in which the USA does not exist.

I dunno. They did have small populations, but they had a very different identity than the East Coasters at this point in history.

Slavery is a non-issue in the Republics at the start. The nations focused very little on what they saw as other nations internal matters. Louisiana has abolished slavery though.

The republics united with eachother for various reasons. Some were annexed because of economic difficulties, others for purely defense purposes. I plan on going further into this in the story, right now i'm laying down the starting groundwork.

Delaware and New Jersey remain independent simply because if they weren't independent they'd be a point of contention between Pennsylvania and New York, which were two of the most critical of the Republics.

The Federation of Frontiersmen isn't so much a country as it is a council of leaders from various parts who decide on cohesive defensive actions and foreign policy issues. It's very similar to the effect of the SOIR. Maybe I can break apart the Frontier countries to and put them in a defensive alliance together as I have the SOIR nations?

And the Carolinas are one nation. They developed into a Cosmopolitan like society, very European in its style. Georgia looked to Carolina as a new capital for a newly united North America.

A few suggestions, if you haven't already played too far:

1. If the nation splintered in this way, I think a New England Confederation would almost certainly have formed.

2. Should Carolina and Georgia start at war, with S. Carolina controlled territory owned by Carolina?

3. The Carolina setup is a little dubious. S. Carolina was originally mostly folks from Barbados and the like, and N. Carolina was more Virginia-oriented; do you think they would have united?

That said, this looks really cool, and I think we would all LOVE it if you uploaded some files as a mod!
