Life After Revolution (1783-1829)
A brief Union of States in America existed from 1782-1785. All states except the neutral Republic of Vermont took part. The bitterness and arguments among the member states were so hostile and so divisive that the union quickly fell apart. In its place rose the Society of Independent Republics.
The SOIR was a pact of the original Union of States members which they agreed upon mutual defense in the face of a common aggressor, and would meet every 3 months to discuss eachother's affairs and internal matters. Because of it's central location Virginia was chosen as the "capital" of this organization.
The most important part of the organization was the Council of United Affairs. Which would make united decisions based on vote tallies amongst the representatives. These matters could only apply to war against foreign aggressors against the whole of the society.
The Republic Vermont maintained observer status and 1 honorary vote in the Council of United Affairs.

The Rise of Alexander Mason in Georgia (1829-1835)
It had been only decades since the Revolution. Under President John Reed the Republic of Georgia had prospered economically and militarily. So much so the Republic of Georgia in 1829 rallied support among the SOIR to approve the invasion of the now faltering Spanish Florida, which had already been almost overrun by Natives and American settlers.
With the Society's approval, Georgia's finest general; Alexander Mason, and 5,000 brave militiamen invaded Florida. Within weeks the entirety of the colony was controlled and annexed. Spain agreed to the Treaty of Montpelier, in which Georgia would pay a one time sum for the colony. President Reed was at his most powerful position ever, and never expected his top general to run against him in the coming election.
Upon his arrival back in Georgia, Alexander Mason gathered many influential Georgian businessmen to bankroll his new political party. It would come to be named "The Continental Unionists Party." The idea behind the fledgling party was radical. A union of all the independent states that formed the SOIR into a great nation under Georgian hegemony.
This caused a vast and powerful wave of support for Mason's campaign. The election was a landslide. The Unionists won a super majority of seats, enough to impose any law they wished. With Mason's control of the military anyone who opposed the Unionists would be dealt with harshly.
The degeneration of the once proud Georgian Republic was quick and concise. The order of events which happened were tragic for democracy.

1) The National Judiciary Act: Gave the President the exclusive power to dismiss and hire Supreme Court justices. All of the Federal Party judges were removed and replaced with sympathetic Unionist judges.
2) Defense of the Republic Act: On the surface, this bill abolished the Militia, and founded the first standing army in the region. However, placed inside the bill was the ability to arrest any Dissidents who opposed the "Defense of the Republic" and its Unionist goals.
3) Total abolition of Democracy: By 1835 Alexander Mason has outlawed any form of democracy, after a vote of public approval passed with a questionable 95% approval rating.

Mason followed up by quickly occupying and annexing contested territories under negotiations, and invading the Carolinas, which forced them into a quick peace deal to salvage their nation.
The Society of Independent Republics knew it had to move fast. Any percieved kink in the loose confederation of allies would be very advantageous to the United Kingdom, which was growing ever more strong as every day passed. As the capital of the SOIR, and Chair member of the Defense Committee, Virginia began preperations for an invasion of Georgia.

That's it so far. I have chosen to not use any historical leaders from the US, as I think it adds constraints to a fantasy story. There will be a very dynamic sort of events. I might can the Federation of Frontiersmen idea for a simple colony claiming setup. Ideas?
