I'm aware of that too...there are two issues here.

One is the fact that there were always chances of Panama breaking away from Colombia at several moments, but the movements were small and usually crushed. There should be some extra events about this...

The other, as you mention, has to do with the building of the canal. This is a wider subject and has been mentioned a couple of times already.

In short, if we want to make the situation more historical, at the minimum this would involve first France's attempt to build the canal and later USA's (or other GPs as well, but these two would be the main candidates), so the normal canal event should be either reworked or removed.

Taking that into consideration, Panama would successfully break away *if* the CLM government refused to build the canal under USA's (or whoever's) conditions *and* USA (or whoever) chose to militarily and politically support the revolters. Once Panama breaks away, they should indeed be satellites and have their independence guaranteed by their "benefactors".

Ok...sort of a "to-do" list for what I'm going to start working on by this friday/saturday (when I'll finally get a big load of real life off my back):

-Test the reductions that I've already made to the education/literacy commands in most of South America, as per the discussions that the VIP group has been having (I'll upload those in the yahoo group soon too).

-Script more events representing around 15-25 years of history for several countries that still need them (not necessarily a huge amount of events, but certainly a few important ones). That includes, among other things, modeling the Spanish intervention against CHL/PEU in 1864-1866, not by making it into a full war (as most of the time it wouldn't be), but leaving that option open for the (human) player.

-Modify some already existing events. For example, ECU has to be tweaked so that it doesn't become so "vulnerable" to outside invasion via it's papal satellite status (which is a little bit of an exaggeration anyways...). Also, the War of the Peru-Bolivia Confederation is a bit too rushed at the beginning of the scenario (now that I've got a book with chapters on the subject in my hands, a much more realistic timeline can and should be possible).

-Panama will get some specific revolt events and I'll try to model the possibility of it becoming independent early at several moments. I will probably make at least a basic event or two regarding the situation leading up to the canal (ie: The Railroad, etc.)....though going further down that road would eventually require modifying a lot of other stuff and touching FRA/USA territory, so it's not my biggest priority right now.

-Finally implement the events for at least the possible *military* creation of Gran Colombia and Kingdom of La Plata (yes, I've had an early version of them sitting around the HD since "Gods knows when", I know. Guilty as charged), as alternate history options (which the player, and not the AI, could seek to pursue). Such events would also sleep several others as an consequence, and of course, some *bonus* events could add some flavor, but I'll leave those for later.

-Whatever comes up....

Also, I do have my prayers for Johan to release the next patch with some softcoded instructions to immigration, so we can mod ourselves.

There are no add_pop events for California (iirc). There are events that increase life ratings, but those increases are all temporary, and my tests showed that they did not apparently increase immigration, though they did increase the birth rate in the province (temporarily). There are such temporary life rating increase events for Texas, too -- so I doubt those are the problem, or else Texas would show the same symptoms.

Additionally, there is an event tree for California which actually increases the rate at which minorities emigrate (assuming that command isn't bugged). So perhaps the issue with California has to do with birth rates there, instead of immigration? (In any case, something sounds wrong. I'll look at it in my future testing.)

have you checked that those new people there because of the life rating are not a result of "increasing the birth rate" but just "assimilated immigrants"? ;)

There was one add_pop event for California, and I somehow managed to overlook the command in it (possibly because I didn't write it). I have uploaded a fix for this to the in-house Yahoo.

This is all the relatively "ready" stuff for now, but I've also finished several minor corrections that I wanted to make to other events (will upload them later today to the yahoo group).

I also have some "tensions within the union" events planned, but will leave them for later (my next priority, other than fixing/changing things that people might point out, is going to be making NEW standard events to cover some of the gaps, as mentioned in the other message).

Two comments about these events, Scythe...
1. The additional badboy - is that really a good idea? If the player has already conquered the other nations, his badboy will be pretty bad already. This extra badboy will almost guarantee foreign intervention. Of course, this may be exactly what you intended, but it does seem a bit excessive.
2. The Kingdom of La Plata. Would Argentina really have turned into a monarchy just because it's managed to reconquer the rest of the former viceroyalty? At the very least, the event should offer the choice between monarchy and whatever government Argentina had before the event.

I think we talked about the political and institutional change that the creation of the vice-royalty should or could provoke in Argentina, but we don't reached to any conclusion.
We can imagine that any tyranic former argentinian president were not affraid by the idea of becoming a king, so , as far as I'm concerned, I find it realistic.

Not at all, in fact that's quite a nice map. Makes me realize that La Plata could use a couple more (non-essential) Bolivian cores.

1.Well yes...perhaps we could tone it down (to 5-6 at least?), but it must be clear that these are going to be risky enterprises. Several foreign nations definitely won't be too happy and an intervention wouldn't be out of the question.

2.I was wondering about that too, but decided to go ahead and present the event "as is" in order to hear what people would think...

There should, eventually, be a choice of form of government, definitely.

The question is...should it be made in the "unification" event itself (say, through an extra action_b/c or so) , or through a different event, that fires after the creation of the country?

EDIT: Reduced the badboy to 4 in the Gran Colombia events too...The monarchy badboy is worse because such a form of government was usually still despised throughout the region.

If the player doesn't want to suffer from racking up too much BB in too little time, he can just do the conquests "one step at a time", no?

I don't know if that would make much difference, toning it down by two or four points when the player is likely to have at least twenty after taking all these countries.
Actually, the more I think about it, the more I wonder if it's appropriate to have a badboy increase at all. I mean, the player has already conquered all these territories, so he's been about as much of a bad boy as he could possibly have been... but now he's normalising their status by establishing them as an integral part of his country, rather than just occupied territories of some sort. Of course, if he does establish a monarchy while he's at it, then there should be a badboy increase, and a big one - but otherwise? I'm just not sure. In any case, the "no, it is impossible" option should really come with the biggest badboy increase of all - if he owns all these territories, but does not want to integrate them into the nation, then releasing them as satellites should be just about the only possibility to avoid badboy wars.

About the revised version of the ARG event - that looks good. The only changes I'd suggest (apart from the badboy issue) is to make the second (La Plata, but no monarchy) option somewhat more likely than the first, and to perhaps revise the relation hits a bit - a much bigger relation hit when it comes to the remaining South American countries (who may be somewhat alarmed by these events ;)), and a smaller reduction with the US (who was not, IIRC, that interested in South America).

I do agree with this, BRZ would be much more alarmed than ENG if this happen, even more, if it was ARG who consolidate the 'La Plata'.

In fact the annexation of URU by ARG, would lead into a immediate DoW by BRZ.

You're right on that one pimparel, thus I'll lower the USA hit (somewhat) and increase the BRZ one then (I had thought about it,but decided to wait...).

IF he takes them all within a very short period of time and doesn't try to reduce his BB score...and any player, if he has gotten that far, can probably handle the situation just fine, can't he? Look at several of the tales in the AAR forum, for example. A little potential risk isn't too bad.

Well, this is definitely a clear difference of interpretation between us...

If the player decides to take no action, then I believe that the normal game rules should apply, because I see these events as something "extra", not a requirement.

The thing is, the "integration" itself, as you call it, would not be automatic.

The proclamation of any of these "fantasy states" would be considered a "badboy action", because giving unjustified "cores" over these lands would mean what in real life we'd consider "annexation" (and the lack of cores would be merely occupation, which is a bad thing but not as bad...thus all the more reason to increase the BB at least a little bit).

Well, that's really a very debatable point...but it's mostly irrelevant either way, considering that it's going to be the player who deals with these events and not the AI (the AI will almost never be in such a situation unless voluntarily aided/setup by the player. It already has too much trouble dealing with the other VIP events).

That's the idea, but that's also why I'd insist on keeping the BB increase.

By all means they wouldn't given the history between both countries, so I think that having those events is a very good idea, in order to add a bit of challenge to this situation. :cool:

In fact, I might consider doing something similar (just a bit weaker/toned down, since none of the countries involved have the equivalent interests/power that BRZ has in the area) for Gran Colombia too.

(ie: if VNZ doesn't exist, then ECU reacts against CLM; if ECU doesn't exist, then VNZ reacts against CLM...and all the other possible combinations, since ECU/VNZ can be aggressors too...in fact, this could eventually be expanded even further, like if PEU eats ECU/BOL, then the neighbors react, etc. But well, "one thing at a time"...)

Though it's probably not going to be this week, as I'm already caught up in research/scripting new events for countries that need the attention. After some progress is made, then these details can be ironed out.

Just a small query, since my memory is a bit flawed and I can't check this at the moment...are you sure that this command is working ok (ie: not bugged. It would be weird if an army in Buenos Aires revolted, for example)?
