Hi, I have a Mac and I have attempted to install VIP:R .3 on Victoria:Revolutions 2.01, however whenever I start the game the VIP:R .3 installation doesn't seem to be installed. Nothing is modified. It just says in the top right corner 2.01 patch 1.4
Also, I installed the zip directly on a duplicate Victoria file on my desktop.

Is there something I did wrong?

hi i've started a game as bavaria and i'm trying to prevent the german unification but so far i've always failed, austria and france seem to lose even if they are winning, during the austro prussian war i took almost all of wesphalia and prevented the prussians from taking almost any province but they peaced and prussia got the victory event, in the franco prussian war they just stared at each other across the border for a few months and then prussia got the three hurrahs for the german empire event, without taking a single french province... is this WAD???

VIP makes it very easy for AI nations to achieve the "proper" historic outcomes. They often have two sets of triggers for their events, one for AI which is easy, and one for human, which is harder.

Still, it is not uncommon to see ahistorical results. I play as Russia right now and France intervened in the 1866 war. Prussia was punished harshly, France got the "Napoleonic triumph" and Austria got cores on all of Silesia (after I edited the game so that it recognizes that Austria won the 1866 war). Prussia is now barred from ever forming Germany. :eek:o And all of that despite me sending several armies as expeditionary corps to Prussia.

Usually if you check the armies comparison in the ledger you get a good idea of who will win the 1866 war. In my case Prussia somehow built only a smallish army (~40 divisions) while Austria mustered over 80 divisions by 1866. It was no surprise that they lost.

were you allied with France? If no, then it's WAD. If you want to change history you need to actively side with the French (aka, full alliance with them), which should then prevent the AI events from firing until Paris falls.

In the case of '66, you need to make sure Austria does not get defeated in Bohemia, if as AI they lose Hradec Kralove (where Sadowa/Koniggratz is located) then the event for Austrian defeat will fire. Remember that it was the Austrian defeat that led to a very quick decision to end the war, in spite of the smaller German minors, so if you want to keep Austria fighting you have to actively help it on its own fronts.

Error when Installing VIP: 0.3

Whenever I try and install VIP: 0.3 it comes up with the following error:

GFX\MAP\shields\newfacist.bmp (error 21FC)

If I ignore this and continue the installation with VIP Hotfix 0.3 I can get as far as starting the game with the correct scenario titles, but on starting any country the game crashes with " couldn't open file scenario/VIPsce/eugs/ColonyBlack.eug".

I recently re-purchased the game in Victoria Complete Pack which is Ver 2.01

I wonder if this version of the game is suitable for the Hotfix?
I've re-downloaded VIP: 0.3 with the same outcome. I wonder if AVG is interfering with the extraction & installation?

Be grateful if anyone can advise on this :)

Bah - Downloaded VIP: 0.3 again and this time all went OK! Classic!
Going to have another go at Japan in VIP this time. I've never been happy or successful with Japan.

Yes, with the mac version of VIP you must manually overwrite the base game files, as we do not have an installer for the Mac version.

So unzip the download, then transfer the files to where you will have VIP installed.

I followed your instructions, however when the game is loading it unexpectedly quits when it says "Initializing globals".

I'm so close to getting this right.

I liked VIP very much but i have 2 problems with it.

So Far I played China Sardinia Piomente, Japan, and had a great fun and enjoyment.

However 1- Game is very slow, i wonder it's because my computer is not well, or it is because of the mod itself? How can i improve it.

2- I played (by the mean, in reality i couldn't) Ottomans, but it is simply impossible to play properly. It is to hard, and in the first Russian Attack you are simply exterminated. It is impossible to build a manageable budget, or a bit army which could not stop but may be could slow Russians.

Secondly Ottomans have 2 fabric factories in the game, but Fabric F. works with chemicals, and there is no chemical factory in Ottomans, and no chemicals also in WM. It takes too long to build one of them( required techs, needed MPs) So they are useless.

Thirdly, literacy is too low. In that time it is true, but not as low as that much, even China has equal literacy. I suggest that it should be boosted a bit, may be 15-20 percent.

Also The population is simply too low compared to that times. Maybe it can be said that it is made by population counts of these times, but Ottomans Pop counts are only made to Türkish males who can be drafted in times of war, so no children or women.

I admit that Ottomans are weak and ill man of Europe, but Not as weaker as in the game, and it is curable.

So will you think to make any improvements on this issue:)?

1- Game is very slow, i wonder it's because my computer is not well, or it is because of the mod itself? How can i improve it.
This is because of all the extra events (amongst other things) in VIP. One way to make it faster is to rename the tiles.bmp folder to tiles.bmp.old (for example). There is a mod somewhere detailing this more, though it is pretty straightforward.
2- I played (by the mean, in reality i couldn't) Ottomans, but it is simply impossible to play properly. It is to hard, and in the first Russian Attack you are simply exterminated. It is impossible to build a manageable budget, or a bit army which could not stop but may be could slow Russians.
Keep trying. It's tough, though it is very possible (and even to destroy Russia in the Crimean war with French and British help).
Secondly Ottomans have 2 fabric factories in the game, but Fabric F. works with chemicals, and there is no chemical factory in Ottomans, and no chemicals also in WM. It takes too long to build one of them (required techs, needed MPs) So they are useless.
It's just the balance choices you'll have to make. It's probably why you don't have much of a budget - you're losing money in those factories. Just wait until chemicals become available to you and then import them as and when you can afford them. It'd be worse to have the Ottomans ahistorically industrialised so early on.
Thirdly, literacy is too low. In that time it is true, but not as low as that much, even China has equal literacy. I suggest that it should be boosted a bit, may be 15-20 percent.
Do you have a source for this? As far as I am aware there was only a very tiny amount of literate people within the Ottoman empire at the time (probably not helped by the fact that the language of the ruling classes was not actually Turkish).
Also The population is simply too low compared to that times. Maybe it can be said that it is made by population counts of these times, but Ottomans Pop counts are only made to Türkish males who can be drafted in times of war, so no children or women.
Remember that 1 POP = 4 people. These are the best estimates that the team have had over the years from a variety of different sources. Usually census data is the best source, though Ottoman censuses are notoriously bad, and so several expert's estimates were taken into account. Personally it seems about right (even when taking into account Ottoman census data and multiplying it by a fair factor to accomodate for women and children).

Peru-Bolivian Confederation

Hello, I have recently installed the your mod and found it simply GREAT!
I have recommended it to all my other friends who play victoria.
I have one recommendation though, the nation of Bolivia, should be named the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, and the capital should be in Tacna (which is a province that is geographically just above Antofagasta... in the game I think it is called Puno). This is becuase the Confederation was made up of 3 divisions, North Peru, South Peru, and Bolivia. Also the eastern part of Ecuador in the game is part of North Peru (thus part of the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, and eventually part of Peru).
This information can also be seen in wikipedia (and it sources):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peru–Bolivian_Confederation
Hope it helps, and keep doing a great job!

Given the current shortage of tags I don't think the name change is viable (can't have a different name unless with a different tag - one we don't really have spare for such a short term and purely aesthetic change). The capital should be moved though, you're right. As for eastern Ecuador/northern Peru, well I think it should be Ecuadorian (see here).

Thanks for the input! :)

Contrary to what the comment says, the province id is incorrect, it should in fact be 1733 instead of 1773.

on the subject of Austria..

The new mod could get me back onto the Victoria horse - especially as the Austrian events seem to have been worked out in detail. Congrats the the team in any case.

A couple of points however.

- I was always unhappy with the default parties available to Austria, which were quite basic. They also did not take into account at all in the various political ideas that existed regarding Austria's future - especially "Großösterreich". This idea was advanced by Adolf Fishof, a liberal who also tried twice to set up new liberal parties that are currently not covered. There are a number of other politcal parties that could also be drawn up (I often end up making my own). Is there a forum or discussion on this, or how is it covered now? The Großösterreich idea is directly related to "Mitteleuropa Thought", which could have played a role in this "United States of Central Europe".

- A point regarding Tirol that often seems to be wholly missed in Victoria. Tirol has a special constitution, the Landlibel from the 16th century, that allows firstly for a "freedom from conscription" and secondly sees the entire country changed into a "level en mass" if it is directly threatened, based on the dozens of "Schützenregimente" that have always been maintained by volunteers throughout. While the rights o Landlibel were patchy (the biggest hey-day was of course against Napoloen), it did play a big role for instance at the entry of Italy into the WW1, where a bunch of Standschüzten blocked the entrie Italian army for a number of weeks.

To model this correctly I think the Austrian player should have an event that fires when a.) at war and b.) one of the Tyrolen provinves are "threatened". In that case it should mob an extra 2 infantry division and perhaps 3-5 militia units.

With regards to the first point: I think many of the parties were generalised into parties sharing the same issues/ideologies so as to prevent them taking votes from eachother. It's more of a gameplay fix rather than historical accuracy. Sometimes gameplay is more important.

With regards to the second point: we don't have that ability with events.

Forming Großösterreich

The more I read other posts about the "Austria Forms Großdeutschland" event, the more firmly I would like to change it to correspond with the "Großösterreich" vision. In particular, I would like to mod the event to keep the name Austria or change it to Großösterreich instead of it becoming Germany. There might be a fundamental misunderstanding as to the Austrian nationhood concept and how the Habsburgs related with and to it.

The concept of Großösterreich was partially formalized by Aurel Popovici in 1906, but the idea existed in different way since the 17th century. The deciding idea (how realistic it is secondary) was to create a meritocratic system separate of all ethnic roots. The Habsburgs liked to view the Catholic Church as the common element, and themselves as the representatives, but in 19th century they themselves became the "glue" of the empire and were perceived to be even above the church. By the mid 19th century (e.g. Fishof, see above) many intellectuals conceived of Austria as an ideal, not actual, state.

The Habsburg legitimacy in this context derived both from its self view as "protector of the church" AND the "protector of the downtrodden" (minorities). This precludes the renaming of Austria to Germany unless the entire empire splits up (so no keeping any non-Germanic lands).

OTOH, the option of forming Großösterreich should be added, in which the Vienna court tries to "keep it all". IF based on the original legitimacy argument outlined this should have the following effects roughly:
- The addition of Czech, Hungarian, North Italian, Polish, Croat, Slovakian and Ukrainian, North German culture.
- Militancy: S.GER +1, N.Ger +3, N.ITA +1, HUN +2, POL 0, Croat -1, SLO -1, Ukr -1,...all other (SERB etc.) +2
- Consciousness: across the board +3
- Plurality up 20
- new political parties
- constitutional monarchy
- A great deal of money: 20-50,000
I would hope this would mean large scale unrest for the first couple of years until the positive effects finally kick in.

Also, the option that the "pure" north German union is (NGF) is formed as a reaction should also be allowed for.

Any suggestion on how best to go about it?

I think the Großösterreich chain should be something seperate from the Großdeutchland chain, and perhaps something which should be ahistorically viable in the right circumstances. I'm not really sure what these circumstances should be, but it would likely need to be in a very liberal, highly-reformed Austria.

It should be hard, whatever the case, as it might overpower Austria far too much. Another issue is having all of those extra national cultures overflowing from the interface box.
