You can as a conmon attract some immigration. With Brasil, I did it, but not for a long time.
Unless in America, or very lucky, you won't be able to get much. Democracies do have the upper hand in that area.

There is no Conservative Empire Event

that has been replaced by the Humiliation of Olmutz chain that fires in 1850

Basically, you as PRU have to support efforts at greater German integration, risking Austrian displeasure (this happens after AUS has restored control over HUN), then AUS will either demand you back down (historical - hence the humiliation, as the Austrians called the Prussians to the carpet at the Olmutz Conference in 1851) or PRU can decide to force the issue with a war against AUS. Win the war, and you form GER.

Only if youre standard Monarchy you can end as Democracy (e.g. China - straight from Monarchy into Republic with all Democratic options turned ON, all at once). With Con. Monarchy you need revolution. But there is one catch.

If country is revolting you can end with permanent Dictatorship. It is extremly annoying thing but it is as it is. And no matter how many times you try to return to Con Monarchy or Democracy, reactionists always overthrowing Democratic gov (not to mention -50 prestige with every attempt). It is reality of Vicky/Ricky. Beware... in particular if your nation has an Order as a national trait. Order guys enjoying Dictatorships. :D

Later game cultural technologies

The later game cultural technologies give large increase in the cost of education and crime fighting. Traditionally they also never really contributed much. Indeed some of them, such as revolution and counter revolution can cause more harm then anything else. So are there any reasons for researching these?

Decided to play USA...

... is there anyway to go on the manifest destiny early? It seems that any time that I try to cancel a sat nation status with any of the Native American nations that it always comes back the next day. Is this WAD, and if so why?

All land transfer events are handled via event.

The restore alliance is actually done to ensure that the AI nations don't fall out of alliance if there is a revolution in one of the minors - which automatically breaks the alliance/satellite condition. Since VIP is focused on creating historical environment for gameplay, that has meant that the default condition is to keep the satellite system in place, since having the human US player breaking the alliance is not something that we expect to happen in most games.

Once again, unexpected player ahistorical gameplay trips up our game design, so we'll have to find a workaround for it.

Well, the VIP:R team did put into place limitations to prevent the United States, and by extension Mexico and the British Empire, from gaining historically large gains on North American territory before they were actually acquired.

I know from playing as the British when I declare war on the North American Natives that an event does fire a couple days into the war that ends it but if I redeclare right after that the event does not fire again. I imagine that this would work for the United States as well.

It can't work that way since you don't get to send another diplo before the sat is restored.

also OH cool, I just wasn't sure about it. I understand how you guys have things and I like it (took a while for it to grow on me but it is so much better then just plain ol' Rick). I just wanted to see about moving it along a little faster with America, but its cool I will wait for the events. Thanks.

Yea and it works in the exactly opposite way [at least for me] if we talking about current/modern Canada region and AI controlled USA...

If AI-USA DOW UK (Caroline Affair event IIRC) UK offers White Peace next day. Futhermore AI controlled USA annexing Canada and all of North America in a blink of the eye (I include here "satelliting" north tribes by USA). 100% cases. And I installed game on few PC. Always the same.

If I playing USA I barely have time to stabilize economy before CA fires. Because of low manpower my army is very much non-existent. And if I DOW UK Im overran by UK troops in a week or so. I know I sux badly with wars, but AI cheating big time.

Well, the UK does kinda have one of the largest militaries in the game at the start, including the all important navy which is rather necessary for launching naval invasions...they like to go for Boston/Hartford, Maryland, Florida, or Louisiana I've found...

So what's everyone's favorite strategy for Brazil? I started a couple of games and managed to get a few immigrants here and there by switching to Pres. dictatorship and boosting up my pop growth with max heathcare, is that pretty much all I can do until the new Liberal/Conservative parties show up in the 1870's? It's 1865, I've 150/day income and empty factories in most of my states but nobody to fill them up with :(.

Do any other reforms beside healthcare improve pop growth? Does increasing the budget for it also improve growth % or do I still get full benefits by keeping it at 50%?

Mandrake - if you're a presidential dictator, set your reforms to as good as you can afford, and set the anarcho liberal party OR the socialist party in power. Either should attract immigrants.

That said, it's a very hit or miss game. If the US has anything approaching an immigrant friendly party in power, you'll get nowt whatever you do :D

Cinéad IV is right. It's terribly difficult to compete against the USA's plurality, unless you are lucky enough to get an ahistorical USA in the game.

I have two basic strategies that seem to work as Brazil. The first is to concentrate on cultural techs while keeping an eye on the SE Asian countries waiting for one to get really bad prestige (-100) so I can start conquering some colonies. Some days I'm like the two old buzzards in the desert though.

patience.jpg

The other strategy that I managed to get to work once was to concentrate on military and industrial techs while building a standing army that I could afford, while also building a good-sized mob pool. I slowly, and I emphasize slowly, began creating a Greater Brazil in SA. If you move too quickly and create too much badboy, you're gonna have the UK, France, and the Netherlands jump on you like stink on manure. If you are decent at Victorian warfare, then go for it. Otherwise, be judicious on which provinces you annex into your empire, and satellite the rest. ;)

Getting immigrants while playing as Brazil is more like icing on the cake. If you ain't gotta decent-tasting cake, no amount of icing is gonna make it better.
