Capital Hulls and Obsolete Ships

I just received the tech to construct protected cruisers, which simultaneously removed my ability to build ironclads. However, I do not have a capital hull facotry yet, nor does it seem anyone else on the WM has them for sale. I'm effectively unable to construct warships. Also, it seems the AI has the same issue, because the Naval comparison screen shows no country having a more modern ship then an IC or an MO class.

Is this WAD? It seems we are in a lull between ship classes and are waiting on hull factories to be built. Will I (or even an AI) soon get an event for state support of a factory? Or am I waiting on my capitalists? Or something I'm overlooking?

both cruisers and steel hull construction are inventions that have a start date of 1870, and steel hull construction requires you have discovered the protected cruiser invention (which makes sense, why build hulls if you have no need for them).

So, as long as you have met the requirements for steel hull buildings (the techs steel steamers and cheap steel and the discovery of protected cruisers) the invention will eventually fire, though the timing of when you get inventions is based on internal engine calculations based on your overall rank and which other nations have already discovered the tech. Once that invention fires, building hull factories will be possible for your capis and you will eventually get an invention to construct a factory as well, depening on your economic policy, military score etc as well as having the invention to consturct steel hulls.

And note that in the naval comparison, ships will only appear AFTER they are constructed. As cruisers take 18 months to construct, they will not immediately appear. Unfortunately the AI goes out and decommissions older units as new ones begin construction, rather than when they are deployed, and this is something that we in VIP can not change, its an exe issue.

On 1 we'd not be able to change the map itelf, and changing the name that appears in text might cause more confusion to players that have little familiarity with American geography and wonder where a unit has gone when it says it's arrived in Baltimore but there is no Baltimore on the map.
I had a feeling that would be the case - thanks for looking into Massachusetts as the state name in New England though.

The enslavment event, if I choose to re-establish slavery, all creoles are converted slaves, but not Afro-Antilléan!
Haiti had the event "Dominican Rebellion is crushed" after I defeated Dominicana.
Guangxi have the same coluor as Annam, Annam is usually annexed by then, but if they're not?
Cherokees and Confederates use the same uniforms, quite confusing when they're at war

Also, why does the indian minor sign peace after they are drawn into war? Must I annex British India before I can annex their satelites?

Curious to know what is happening with Socialist-Communist parties. I am playing Belgium and it is the mid-1880's and I haven't seen any appear. So I am asking if they were forgotten, simply not implemented yet, or generally moved to a later time then in previous VIP versions.

Curious Belgians want to know! ;)

Socialist parties should start to appear in the 1880s-1890s as when they historically did appear.

For Belgium, the first socialist party should appear in 1885 :

They are put to peace because historically they did not involve themselves in British India's wars until World War II. Having them get pulled into wars fought by AI India against other AI nations results in the minors having major stability problems, having revolutions, and breaking their ties to IND. To keep the minors stable, they peace out and yes, you pretty much have to defeat IND first to take over the minors, since it would have been over IND's dead body that a third power would have been allowed to take over the minor states (similarly the US would never allow a third power outside North America to take over the Native Americans, or the Dutch allow a third power to take over their minions in Indonesia).

Playing VIP:R as France, I got an event to free the slaves. As it came along with a nifty plurality bonus, I freed all the slaves. Afterwards I saved, and when I started the save up again, I got an event questioning the course our country took, presenting me with the options of reenslavement or keep them free.
And then I noticed something odd. The choice "They are people too", aka keep them free, came with a -5 plurality hit.

Is that WAD? As I find giving a minus to plurality when choosing not to have slaves a little confusing. :wacko:

As I was waiting for time to go by and on 2 January 1843 I noticed the very out of place looking event called "France DoW ALD" fire.

If this is an AI-only event, I was under the impression it wasn't suppose to appear in the event log. And apart from anything else, this is the first time I noticed it fire.

I'd suggest the Ministerial Government invention is made into an event. I played a game as Japan and took the Dutch letter. It's now 1880 and I've had the prereqs for ministerial government since before 1860 (when the invention goes "live"). The invention expires at the end of the year, so should be easier to get, however 20 years later and I'm still sitting without it.

It's now 1880 and I've had the prereqs for ministerial government since before 1860 (when the invention goes "live"). The invention expires at the end of the year, so should be easier to get, however 20 years later and I'm still sitting without it.

very odd, not noticed it being a problem. Save & restart didn't help any, we do recommend save & restart every couple years to refresh the game engine, but if your overall rank, and in particular prestige, are low then there can be a significant delay in getting an invention.

Of course making it an event will require making 150+ versions of it for each unciv (because there is always the possibility someone will civilized with bali, or Segu, or Bhutan).

ah was something tested just before release, probably forgot to change the name from France DoW ALD to "AI_Event". Will fix.

Playing VIP:R as France, I got an event to free the slaves. As it came along with a nifty plurality bonus, I freed all the slaves. Afterwards I saved, and when I started the save up again, I got an event questioning the course our country took, presenting me with the options of reenslavement or keep them free.
And then I noticed something odd. The choice "They are people too", aka keep them free, came with a -5 plurality hit.

Is that WAD? As I find giving a minus to plurality when choosing not to have slaves a little confusing. :wacko:

Ah.

Well, I did solve it. I moved the time the invention kicks in back to 1800, and set the expiry date to december 1863. The savegame I had was in march 1863 and the invention then duly fired in October 1863.

My prestige wasn't low, about 300 or so and ranked maybe 15-20th in the world. My ranking was low, because of low industry as an unciv.
