Now that we are keeping up-to-date files with combined VIP and Original Game events for each country on the main page at Yahoo, I don't see the need for a "downloads" folder. So I've renamed the "VIP downloads" file to "VIP Submissions in winrar form" to serve as an archive of our submissions. These are all the files submitted to Generalisimo in case anyone needs to check what has been updated.

I think anything not in a folder now is a file that is needed for download by interested players.

I called what was sent today as 1.2a as it was a mix of tweaks and new events. But now we have a vip_xxx3 file for work in progress for the next round of new material.

Great to see the use of combined files. Removes the need to tell d/lers which events to cancel out. :) I take it you're including an events.txt file as well? Well, now that I'm assured the power is back on down here I will be returning to coding. Of course, I'm really excited to see VIP 1.0 come out, so we can see how our events are received. :)

The following was posted in the general discussion thread about our events:

"In several games I've played, the British take over part of Alaska in the Crimean War. When they cut Canada loose in 1867, Canada does not receive these Alaskan provinces. This doesn't make sense, if you think about it. If the British are going to spin Canada off, why would they keep one or two or three sparsely populated provinces which are contiguous to Canada, and not easily accessible to them (the UK)?"

Should the relevant events be modded to include transferring Alaska? How do our Seward's Folley events fit in?

Theo: interesting set of events, but aren't you missing two?

One should go here for Mexico as a trigger event in the chain, with a and b options to contract the construction of two ships:"Build them" and "We don't need them." Action_b would have all linked events slept. The trigger should be that MEX has some naval tech that allows construction of the ships (I'd suggest one, but I'm unable to pull up the techtionary at the moment - but probably commerce raiders).

The other event goes here for Mexico to receive two ships - FR or CR, depending on tech and/or historical nature of ships. (As I recall, the Battle of Campeche was a sail-driven Texas Navy defeating the steam-powered Mexican Navy, so I think that the tech and ships should be Commerce Raiders.) This of course would only fire if the links followed through to ENG not doing anything to stop their release.

Actually, I left those two Mexican events out on purpose, because I wanted the events to focus on Anglo-Texan relations, without directly affecting any balance of power (because apparently the English ships turned out to be pretty much a wash in terms of affecting the balance of power, though as always I may be wrong).

Leaving the ships offstage allows dispensement with concerns about either Mexican or English tech levels, which would likely push the events out of their historic timeline -- and I didn't want the diplomatic effects to be pushed out of their timeline, because they were connected to a political situation that historically didn't relate to questions of technology. If the events wait too long they would typically become moot, since Texas usually doesn't stay independent.

To me it's more important that the diplomatic effects take place in their historical timeframe, because France and especially England are prime tech trading partners for Texas, and if the Montezuma events don't take place in a historical timeframe then Anglo-Texas relations tend to stay ahistorically high, which in the game means that Texas ends up with a lot more money than it otherwise would, to an extent that can be significantly imbalancing. (Basically, the Montezuma events tend to cancel out the gains from Texas recognition by England.)

Leaving actual ships out of the equation is also an attempt to avoid imbalance. Actually giving the Mexicans the ships in the game is not something I'm comfortable with, since they were apparently ironclads of some sort -- but apparently not like the ironclads of the ACW, since they were both significantly damaged by wooden ships of the Texas Navy. I haven't found enough information on them to be able to classify them in game terms, but since they obviously didn't sweep the sea, they shouldn't be ironclads in the game. (If the Mexicans were to actually receive the ships in the game, it shouldn't be based on considerations about their tech, but about English tech. The Mexicans are basically buying English tech in the course of the sale, regardless of their own tech level. This is also something which makes me a little uneasy about adding in actual ships.)

I've also been sensitive to the fact that, in 1.02, there typically aren't any clipper or steamer units on the world market for naval units to be built from. I haven't wanted to hand out too many units that the countries couldn't actually build for themselves.

Additionally, two ships are below what I perceive to be the scale used in the game. Victoria naval units appear (from the amount of ship resources required to build them) to represent squadrons of ships, rather than individual ships themselves. (The ability to attach corvettes to naval units also gives me the perception of dealing with squadrons instead of single ships.) Two ships is too small a number to be actually represented by a unit in the game. (I perceive two ships to equate to two clipper or steamer commodity units in the game, and this is how I approached, for example, the capture of three Mexican ships by Texas in the "Horse Marines" event.)

Taking the above into consideration, it may yet be appropriate to add events which give Mexico a naval unit. Thoughts?

Later today I'll be posting a set of Texas-Mexico events concerning the Mexican incursions of 1842. The Santa Fe Expedition events will reappear as the end of this event tree. The events represent three actual Mexican invasions of Texas, and two actual and two potential Texan invasions of Mexico. (Historically, none of these lead to full-scale warfare, though that's a minority possibility in the events.)

History between Texas and Mexico was less sedate than the original Victoria release would portray. (We should flesh out things from the Mexican side in regard to the rises and falls of Santa Ana.)

i have received in aprof emails some modifications for provinces, can you make a list of the changes?
for example:
Code:
PROVINCE	ID	OLD_RES NEW_RES
Buenos Aires	XXXX	cattle rubber
and more columns if you changed also the terrain, etc...

i want to test if i can avoid modifying the province.csv, and it is hard to know which number you mod of that file... ;)

thanks.

The only province change I made was Portland, ME from lumber to fish. :) I believe Theo had incorporated that into his province resources file. Can you confirm, Theo?

PROVINCE ID OLD_RES NEW_RES
Portland 625 timber fish

Point well taken. But if we tie the events to what Mexico has learned - it would be historical. The events will happen if Mexico has basic naval shipbuilding or leadership technology - at least enough to justify purchasing ships from ENG. And it would be in the time-line.

If Texas gets too high relations to ENG then that event is out of balance.

If Texas survives past its time, then a Mexican navy being bought later than historical might be a nice balance to Texas hegemony and would put some serious consequences to protesting the purchase from ENG. Loss of relations with ENG or letting Mexico gain a navy. Interesting situation.

Leaving actual ships out of the equation is also an attempt to avoid imbalance. No they weren't ironclads in the sense of the Monitor or Virginia, but IIRC were iron-hulled vessels with steam-driven propulsion in addition to sails. A commerce raider might be too much.

I've also been sensitive to the fact that, in 1.02, there typically aren't any clipper or steamer units on the world market for naval units to be built from. I haven't wanted to hand out too many units that the countries couldn't actually build for themselves.

Actually, any ship of 1000 tons or more is represented as a single ship unit. (Don't go by the numbers of clipper/steamer transports needed to build such a unit in the army screen. That isn't directly related.)

I suspect these Mexican ships were smaller than 1000 tons, so you're right that they'd be better represented as a flotilla. A single FR or CR unit might represent both.

Taking the above into consideration, it may yet be appropriate to add events which give Mexico a naval unit. Thoughts?

My thought is that without the actual Mexican ships introduced into the game - threatening to throw the balance of power out of whack, that the events are of little consequence. Texas won't prevent the Mexicans from getting these ships, because they aren't going to get any. So what is the reason to protest?

No they weren't ironclads in the sense of the Monitor or Virginia, but IIRC were iron-hulled vessels with steam-driven propulsion in addition to sails. A commerce raider might be too much.

Good points. I'll work on the Mexican events this afternoon, after I talk King County into letting me out of jail once again. (I work as a public defender.)

I'll set it up so that the Mexicans only have to pay for the naval unit if they actually get it. I expect I can work the event in such a way that it stays in timeline and still maintains tech fidelity. (I perceive that the naval unit is likely to be best represented by something that's within or close to Mexico's capabilities -- plus it may be reasonable to include a minor tech trade at a heightened price.)

I thought this version of the event had been removed. Sorry. I've replaced it with a version that was submitted in the last couple of days. The Santa Fe Expedition series of events should have been removed from submission, too, because I'm still working out problems. (Plus they need to be made interactive with Mexico.)

The only province change I made was Portland, ME from lumber to fish. :) I believe Theo had incorporated that into his province resources file. Can you confirm, Theo?

PROVINCE ID OLD_RES NEW_RES
Portland 625 timber fish

Somehow that got overlooked for submission, though I've managed to get it incorporated into my personal files. My apologies.

Once again, my apologies. Please remove all the Santa Fe expedition series of events. They do not work correctly in the form you have. Replacements will be coming soon.

Looks like I'll be spending some time asap verifying that other events submitted are the latest versions.
