I've determined that it's very true that a faulty event can short circuit other events. I'm having to move more and more events to my flavor_tex file to get them to fire, so there's one or more of the events that got written first that are bugged. I'm narrowing this down.

Something I've done may be helpful to you, Theo. I've ended up with three files that I use to test things - vip_temp, vip_temp1 and vip_temp2. I use these so I don't have to mess with any of the files that do work and I don't have to spend time #ing/un#ing out lines in the event.txt file saying what event files the game needs to look for. These three are always open no matter what I have in them.

When I have files that aren't working I copy portions to one of the three and test using them. It has also helped in narrowing down the sources of problems.

I've taken out the manpower adds in the Alamo/Goliad event and the Col. calls for volunteers event. The Texas manpower situation is such that the extra manpower just isn't at all useful and in fact just evaporates.

I toned down the diplomacy increases for the Alamo/Goliad event a bit, because +50 was in fact a bit too much. +20 for Enland and France and +30 for US works well.

I continue to test. So far the events are firing.

Fair enough, since that event was designed when there wasn't much else for Texas, not even the San Jacinto and Velasco events. :)

Did you put any thought into the Irish/US/UK war idea I posted earlier? As the game runs now, if the US and UK get into a war, and even if the USA takes all of Ireland, it is just treated like any other UK controlled territory.

Perhaps we should put a "liberation of Ireland" event in much like the "liberation of Canada" event (as soon as the USA takes all the provinces, Ireland is 'formed' as an independent satellite country). What do you think?

I have removed the Santa Fe expedition events from use pending further testing. There are problems with the randomized triggers, which sometimes leads to more than one result firing at the same time. I don't want to take time right now to sort it out, so I'll come back to it when I've verified that other things are running.

thanks. I slready have all those Id's reserved, so that's not a problem. I haven't looked at the Irish-US-Uk events in detail as yet. I wanted to get these events working first, then integrate them all together. That way, the later US events would be based on the famine happening, and others like the 1867 rebellion, would be dependant on the ACW being over. I'd also like to link the Fenian Invasion of canada to both my IRB events, and the flag = ire_nat. It makes things more complicated, but more historical with the interlinkings.

As for a "liberation of Ireland," I could see that, especially after the end of the ACW. Given that most of the IRB field commanders were veterans of the ACW, who returned just to take part in the 1867 rebellion, that strong link would work.

Once I make sure all these WaD, with no bugs or broken commands, I can move to make those integrations. It should (*crosses fingers*), produce a very historically feeling dynamic.

I'm still troubleshooting Texas events. My flavor events are firing well, but there's some bug in one of the other events that continues to elude me. I've got to go to work for a few hours, but I'll be back at it this afternoon.

I think I may have finally found the problem.

FYI: If ever an event closes with 3 }, as in
}
}
}

then the game apparently quits reading the file right at that point. Everything below is ignored. No further events fire. Further syntax errors don't generate error messages, because they aren't read in the first place. And the 3 bracket formation doesn't itself generate an error message, so if you don't catch it yourself it won't be announced to you.

In a few minutes I'm going to start Texas again from the beginning of the GC using one unified event file and see if anything's still not firing.

No deadline for this. I was just thinking that it might be nice to get these tweaks to him soon rather than wait until we get together a 1.2 submission.

But Met has been busy with Central America events, I'm starting up some Canada stuff as well as doing a little work on Mexico, and JRaup and Aragos are talking about Ireland and Fenian events. We may have enough done by next week to send in a small 1.02 submission and include these tweaks with it. So, don't feel pressured to get it done quickly just to get it done.

Well, I know that if it reports a couple errors, it won't report the rest until you try loading the game again. So I just keep loading, correcting, loading, correcting, until I can load a game without a single error popping up. Are you saying that the game loads events with three "}"s at the end, and nothing pops up? I'm pretty sure it's buzzed me on those.

I've not only had the game load without errors while the 3 } were present, it appears to stop the game from reading further in the file.

I tried turning the Indian Raids events into random events so that they'd fire more than once during their lifetime. (Not the named historic battles, just the generic raid events.) Does anyone know anything about random events? Do they have to be in the randomevent file to fire?

I think the only requirement for a random event is to mark it "random = yes". As to putting the event into the randomevent file, I don't think that should be necessary, but maybe there is some small advantage to it re: processing the files by the game engine.

Up to 85 members on Yahoo. Just one person as indicated a problem with downloading the files so far, but it could be that he just downloaded the wrong ones.

I've uploaded my .txt files to the main Files page on Yahoo. They work and it should alleviate some of the cut-and-paste issues that some people are having.

I did much the same. I posted tested and working versions of the Central American reunification events and a combination of the Spain, USA and CSA files for the Spanish-American War events into the Carib folder just in case people want to pick and choose among event groups.

Perhaps the one who's having trouble took some of the early/beta versions?
