Greenback Party

I would recommend that the Greenback Party's start date be moved back from 1872. As the party, or faction, was organized primarily as a response to the Panic of 1873, it would seem odd to have it compete for votes prior to that date. The only mention of a convention I can find is on Wikipedia, placing the origins to late November 1874. With that in mind, it seems a start date of 1875 would be prudent, as late November in 1874 would have put the party outside the realm to contest the mid-terms that year.

This has probably been asked before, but I'm playing the ultimate VIP version of the original Vicky game, and at some point in the... early/mid-1870s I think it was, Canada said 'hooray' to gov't changes the flag... and now there is no flag at all. Just blank, empty space. At least it didn't crash, I guess. Good ol' Johan.

And btw, the USA got this cheesey "1776 1876" flag, which surely must be ahistorical?? Well, it's 1878 now, and I'm getting tired of looking at it... :p

What are those large Cherokee culture POP's in Texas, Kansas, etc. representing. Did the Old Settlers go there?

by 1836 IIRC you have already had a large portion of the Cherokee and other southern tribes subject to removal already settled in "indian territory" and that is what those POPs represent.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested in the past, but might I suggest a northern secession event chain in the case that slavery remains an entrenched institution, along with low tariffs (I believe this was favored by the south?)?

Or is it totally implausible that the northerners would feel as alienated and powerless the central government dominated by the south as the south felt about the north?

Fully as much, yes, that's a bit implausible, simply because the south would have a harder time dominating the central government to the degree that the north could.
Now...

How plausible? Well, somewhat, at least... but using another tag for what is very much an ahistorical thing is probably not something VIP would be that keen on doing (it being of better use for historical stateds), and using New England is not right, it being more then just New England. More then New England+New York, even.

Where did the Yanks go?

Ok, I don't know if this has been raised before, and I hadn't given it any thought before now, but where have all the Yankee and Dixie POPs got to? I noticed it mainly when reading the events for 'Bleeding Kansas' talking of settler violence and the like. It raises the militancy for Yankee and Dixie POPs in Kansas, yet I have none... So I had a look around, and everything from Kansas, Nebraska and Minnesota westwards (not including California) has less than 10,000 (that highest number being only in Utah) down to 0 Yankee's in all but a few of the aformentioned states. I can't encourage the Yanks to move from New York and the such as the RGOs are mostly bad. So where are these people meant to be? What is the point in having events for a non-existent people?

Thanks in advance
Rob

Yankee, Dixie, and Afro-American should all be long range cultures.

To where were Americans emigrating outside the USA in this period?

What is needed is a third category (midrange) that would encourage POPs to move long distances within a nation but not leave their home country. Would definitely help in spreading the population of USA, Canada, Brazil and Argentina more evenly across those nations.

But given the game mechanics as currently established, the USA will have a hollow middle much more than it historically had, and there is little we can do about it. We might consider events to add POPs to the Plains region if we can ensure that such additions do not further exaggerate US Population levels even more than what they currently are (again something we have little control over in VIP)

How about changing province resource to precious metal when there was gold rush in the area? Later the resource would be changed back to what ever it was.

(Something that I have thought already for some time. I have no idea if it would work at all or if it already has been tried out. It can already work this way. I never play USA)

It may be due to AI inability to use its POPs most effectively due to large POP blocks in factories preventing any labor going into new factories.

If you have not used Dietmar's POP splitter (see link in my sig) try it out, as it helps break up the AI large POP blocks and makes it more efficient in developing its economy. That should help.

Of course there may be other issues, depending on how much immigration the USA can attract and how much push factor there is from Europe that will be attracted to the US.

While playing a game as Romania, I've accidentally discovered a huge problem with the Franco-Mexican war...

I decided to invade Mexico in early 1861 because I wanted some precious metal RGO's in American so I could get immigrants. By July or so, I had occupied around ten provinces or so. Then, the French Intervention event fired; France, UK and Spain declared war on Mexico, and a few days later, Mexico became a French satellite. I automatically got peace with Mexico, but here lies the problem: I got all of the provinces I had occupied (save the capital)... with no badboy penalty at all! I had just gotten ten provinces from a civilized nation with no consequences at all...

But the problem is that I can't really think of a fair way to fix that. Does anyone have a solution in mind?

Event ideas for Canada

I'm wondering if this has been thought about at all, but I'm playing a game as Canada and it's 1898 and I only have cores on a couple of provinces in Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba. Maybe an event chain could be introduced to give it cores on what would become the rest of the country progressively after 1867 as it expanded westwards, with the accompanying immigration.

Admittedly, I started the game as Britain, released all the North American colonies and reloaded as Canada and became independent and annexed them. If you don't, and play regularly according to what happened in real life, is there something that works to this effect?

Also, I was wondering if more events could be made. I find that there were only a couple of events: the fishing rights, and the first and second Northwest Rebellions. If there were more, it would definitely spice up the experience. Since it was a late-bloomer historically, most of the events would probably fire in the mid-to late game. I have a few ideas, although I really don't know how to make them myself. They include:

- admission of the provinces into confederation in the proper order, and the cores assigned appropriately
- the beginning of building of the CPR. lose tons of money and railway building supplies
- the last spike of the CPR, Hooray! Nice prestige boost and an iron/steel railway from Halifax to Vancouver?
- an event that fires an immigration event in the late 1890's when Sir Wilfrid Laurier was PM and introduced the eastern-European friendly immigration policies that populated the prairies. Maybe gives you a dramatic increase in plurality?
- a possibility to buy Alaska off Russia if the US doesn't. Obviously transfers ownership of Alaska to Canada if Russia agrees.
- an event, if you don't have a navy, that fires, giving you two of Britain's protected cruisers, which did happen in real life in, I think, 1905. The "Tinpot Navy" as it was called
- possibility of admission of Newfoundland into confederation later in the game if it is still British or a Dominion of Britain, and the cores on those provinces transfered to Canada
- the reciprocity debate over free trade in the early 1900's, again under Laurier's PM-ship, maybe influence 25% of the population to a free trade or protectionist primary issue depending on which way the debate goes
- if the Great War is properly implemented, then like any other participant, events for war bonds and the war effort in general?
- if the US bought Alaska, the Alaska boundary dispute, I think in 1898?, should fire for Britain, Canada, and America, to determine who gets ownership over the Alaskan panhandle, since we can't simulate transferring a slim strip of territory within a province and a prestige boost/loss depending on who wins the legal proceedings.
- the event that fires making Fort McPherson the precious metal producer in the Yukon needs to be changed as well. The Klondike Gold Rush was actually centred around the city of Dawson, and thus it's respective province in the game. I also wonder if 10,000 people should appear in Dawson to simulate the mad rush of people there.

That's what I came up with sitting here at the computer. I'm sure there are many more that could be incorporated as well, but those seem to be the main events that I remember from my history lessons.

Cheers,
Delegate
