This is on the States thread:

Action said:
Ok, so you've come up with a good reason Delaware should be it's own state.

But, is there a good reason why Vermont and New Hampshire should not be merged into one two province state? It would benefit the economic side of gameplay; one province states have some annoying issues.

Is there a good reason why Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticutt should not be merged into one three province state? Again, it would benefit the economic side of gameplay.

I think you can free up three states in New England.

Massachusetts, New Hamsphire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticutt -> New Hampshire - Vermont, Mass- Conn - Rhode Island, plus three free states.

My names suck but you get my drift.

The important thing is, these changes would benefit the gameplay AND free up states. Because Industrializing one province states is very annoying. New England was where American industrialization really took off, but I don't usually build any factories there becase it is all one province states.

Any problems with this idea? If so, please detail them so that they can be communicated to the folks on the States thread. Otherwise, what's listed above may happen.

Too Much Texas?

***I was going to place this in the North American thread, but there is a seperate matter currently in discussion and I did not want to interfere (mainly due the fact that I don't know how to quote previous posts) ***

Anyways.....

I'm sure we can all agree that events are half the pleasure of VIP. Yet I couln't help notice that Texas seems to have an event for EVERYTHING. Personally, I feel this creates unbalance as such a small nation as Texas makes up half of the events of the early GC. In my observations, I have noticed that events give Texas warships even though they often have no existing ports. An event also gives Texas a furniture factory, even though they often lack to means of production (sending their industry in the -100s!!!). In my opinion, other trivial events include Swedish, German and Polish immigation, yet I checked after and saw that not a single European lived in any Texan province.
I know that Texas needs a "boost" in order to survive, but this is honestly too much.

Aside from all my b*tching an whining, I would like to make an off-beat suggestion. I saw in my last game that the CSA had an event for Tobasco Sauce (very cool, but I don't know what the benefits are). With that in mind, shouldn't all cullinary developments be events as well? Such as Austrian developments in chocolate? Or even British fish n' chips? :)

It reflects the fact that American modders have taken to VIP like ducks to water and so in this early period for VIP there is a large amount of Texas and other US-oriented events. As more people get involved in more areas the balance will develop between regions. And think of it this way, players of VIP will learn alot about Texas they may never have known before. Whether or not this is creating an imbalance is another question.

I saw in my last game that the CSA had an event for Tobasco Sauce (very cool, but I don't know what the benefits are). With that in mind, shouldn't all cullinary developments be events as well? Such as Austrian developments in chocolate? Or even British fish n' chips? :)

The lack of events for other countries is due to a lack of people working on those countries. Feel free to pitch in wherever you wish.

The Texas immigration events will have more effect if Paradox ever fixes the add_pop command. (As it is, they don't add the POPs they're supposed to. They do, however, still raise province life rating temporarily, which is why I've left them in.) If they continue to seem irrelevant after that, they'll be removed.

Likewise, any other events that in the long run seem irrelevant will be removed.

The furniture factory represents historical production capacity. If it turns out to create severe problems it will be removed. All is still in balance testing, since it's only recently that I'm able to work with VIP as a whole to see synergies or lack thereof. (Keep in mind that historically Texas was perpetually in debt due to overspending, and that the event scheme is designed with this somewhat in mind when Texas is run by the AI.)

The Texas navy events apparently need a fix to the trigger to prevent them from firing if Texas doesn't own Houston. This will happen today, and will be included in the fix files on Yahoo.

As for an imbalance, I haven't seen it in hands-off testing. Texas still tends to get ripped up if she fights a second war with Mexico without sufficient allies. Texas does not end up conquering the world, or even Arizona.

Have you played a game as Texas yet? If not, try it and see how you perceive the events then.

EDIT: The problem with Texas buying ships if it doesn't have a port is fixed, and included in the fix files on Yahoo. Many thanks for picking up on this issue. (I'd thought of it, and then lost track of the thought while working on other things.)

On behalf of VIP NA Group, many thanks for the compliment. :)

I'd greatly appreciate any feedback you may wish to share when you're done. (There are files on the NA Group Yahoo page with fixes for bugs reported to date.)

The alternate history aspects of Texas also make for a fertile ground. That and its not just the Americans, jumping in, but we Texans as well ;) (Sorry, old joke)

Some alternate history has been added, and more is coming. Texas can end up a military dictatorship in 1837, and/or can follow the Lamar Doctrine and claim Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and California. Texas can get involved with rebellions in Nueva Leon and Yucatan, and end up claiming those as well. In 1860 the governor of Nueva Leon will offer it to an independent Texas, if Texas will in return back him in the civil war in Mexico. (This is about to be added.) We're open to other ideas as well, especially if they're based in history, as all the above are.

I've also noted that sometimes in hands-off games Texas will ally with UCA and then get involved in wars in Central America, which is also alternate history.

Seen in the States thread, as a follow-up to the post about collapsing states in New England into fewer entities:

eschaton said:
I have spent the majority of my life living in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and I don't share the same feeling about all the 'states' having to be in. Technically, West Virginia is not a state after all, from what I noted. It starts in Virgina, and becomes part of it once again once the CSA is re-annexed. My desire to see New England lumped together *comes* from my desire to play New England. Unless you get an incredible amount of Immigration, it's impossible to keep a factory fully staffed in some states, especially Connecticut and Rhode Island, since they never seem to attract immigrants.

When it comes down to it, there are *no* particular flavors that US states have. Part of this is due to the silly way they have worked immigration now, where both ethnic background and religion go away amazingly quickly. As an aside, I'm pissed that due to people complaining about muslim yankees, there are now no catholic or jewish ones.

So if there are no cultural differences in the U.S., what seperates states in Victoria? There is no federal system...no local laws. Resources and crime events happen on a province level. Events can happen on a province or statewide level. All it comes down to is factory management. What's changed is just your own mental conception, and really, it's a game, you can imagine it to be whatever you desire.

I'm in favor of collapsing things if it won't interfere. Any thoughts? (Keep in mind that Delaware can become a slave state, and should remain separate for that reason.)

Sometimes less is more.

I have no concerns about joining the New England states into smaller entities. However, to help a New England revolter nation, I'd suggest making the groups:

1: Vermont + New Hampshire

2: Massachusetts + Rhode Island + Connecticutt

3: Maine

After all, Met created all those great events for NEN, and we're thinking of redoing the ACW events with flags that can allow either a Southern or New England secession. We shouldn't ruin that work by making New England into just one or two states.

I think collapsing New England's state count is fine. I'd almost argue for just the one state, but if that's deemed too few, I'd have MA, RI and CT as one state, and VT, NH and ME as another.

Like I said, I respect what the States thread is doing though I oppose it. If there's a choice between one state and three to four, naturally I'd favor three to four. You could lump New Hampshire and Vermont, and maybe Rhode Island and Connecticut. A good compromise, and one I'd be fine with. :)

Question regarding statehood in 1836

If this issue has been raised before I apologize for raising it again but I decided to play USA for the first time and I noticed that in 1836 not only does the USA have full territories set up in the Plains (Dakotas, Nebraska etc) but that it is possible to grant these territories statehood as early as 1836. Somehow that seems quite wrong to me and overstates US power beyond what it would have had in 1836 visavis other nations. Also the population breakdowns in the plains/Midwest territories also seem way too European - for example Iowa and Wisconsin 100% Yankee and North Dakota 100% British when all three still had strong Native communities (and ND I doubt had many non-Native Americans at all in 1836). Not sure what solutions can be offered but I think at least the ability to grant statehood to the Dakotas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas and Wisconsin should not exist in 1836, which currently it seems to be, as statehood did not come til these regions until much (often very much) later.

The US did own these territories, and the ownerships for North America are all correct, but I agree that you shouldn't be able to grant them statehood immediately. As I understand it, you can't grant statehood until you have a cultural majority in the state. The easiet way to fix this would be to mess around with the startup POP files, raising the ratio of Indians to US citizens. Over time, the Yankee population would overtake the native one and then statehood would be possible.

A similar problem: Arizona and Neveda are states when you claim them from Mexico, but that might be harder to fix.

Actual ownership probably shouldn't be considered until much later, after the defeat of Native resistance. How to replicate that situation is another issue though.

POP adjustments may well address this. I'll put it on my list to look into.

Question on Treaty of Velasco...

Why is Texas gaining control of all of New Mexico as a result of the A choice of the Treaty of Velasco/Victory at San Jacinto event? I do understand that the eastern quarter of the state was considered part of the Mexican province of Texas, but to give the Texans control of Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque in 1836 seems a bit much since these were definitely not within the province of Texas by anyone's definition. I understand that we are stuck with Paradox' division of New Mexico into 3 horizontal provinces but I think it is quite incorrect to have the Texans gain control of all New Mexico in 1836 as a result. There would have been no need for Colonel Kearny's expedition in 1846 to secure New Mexico had it been otherwise.

Actual ownership probably shouldn't be considered until much later, after the defeat of Native resistance. How to replicate that situation is another issue though.

The same situation exists in the Mexican territories. One can make an argument - not necessarily a convincing one - for the California coast and New Mexico as being under firm control, but there were *no* significant non-native settlements in inland California, Nevada, Utah, or Arizona (excepting Fort Yuma) in 1836. Most of the inland parts of Northern California were settled - like Texas, by American immigrants - between then and 1849, and Utah was similarly settled during that time by Americans. Mexico debatably had control over inland California, but definitely not Utah. And Nevada and Arizona were still largely unsettled at the time of the American conquest and for quite some time after.
