It should be said that I myself, and surely many others respect the time and effort put into VIP and others mod; we just aren't looking for the experience offered by those mods. And of course, we don't consider the developers to be responsible for the snobbish attitude that often finds itself directed at those who play the regular game.

The vanilla designation is not specific to Vic. but I think such a description means the same for any game. Vanilla does not do the game justice, if we have to deal in ice cream analogies, I'd consider the unmodded game as chocolate and the mods as sundaes with more toppings than I'd prefer.

Seriously though, I wouldn't say there is a really big degree of hostility between the two camps, but just from what I see, those who don't use VIP tend to be the ones more often viewed as slightly inferior. VIP is an add-on to the game, but it is more often treated as if it were the proper platonic form the game was intended to take, whereas Vic, 1.03 is merely a training ground which the player will progress out of when supposedly prepared enough.

Hmmm

Well I don't know about "hostility" or any other conflicts. I am concerned that this is the VICTORIA forum, and that the basic assumption should be questions brought up UNLESS OTHERWISE IDENTIFIED should be considered as referring to the game as provided by the Company.

I would not have posted if I hadn't been confused by some replies in threads I read which purported to give answers to Victoria questions, but made references to things I never see in the 1.03 update. I mean trying to play with suggestions that turn out to be from some other mod confused ME... so I brought it up.

Granted many people who post here have jumped on the VIP bandwagon, probably because the developers (1) are more responsive and (2) accept modifications submitted by players directly. All well and good...but as I said, I am a purist and like playing a game that is UNIVERSALLY accepted. Despite what you VIP players might think, you are using Victoria 1.03 as your base for modification, and it is the universal constant here. Therefore I would like to know the questions and answers are readily identifiable, and the assumption should remain they refer to Victoria unless otherwise identified.

Thats my two-cents. Didn't mean to stir up so much controvery tho. BTW, I agree that labeling something "vanilla" is denegrating it, altho I can see how people working with later versions would consider such a label like simply calling it "basic." Still, it should be called Victoria, while the changed
version(s) can be called whatever the developers like.

Heck, well, I will make an exception. Victoria 1.0 can be called 'vanilla', and that is a concession because it isn't bland but buggy and more exploitable. To reference Victoria patched beyond 1.0 is at least mildly derogatory.

I have recently started playing VIP, I personally love it.

I just love getting events, even if they don't really change or affect anything. They make me squeal like a historical fanboy.

Like one event CORE had, about nationalizing German waterways, or something like that. That had no in-game affect beyond slight relational drops, but I thought it was just awesome to put things like that inthere. Really helps to immerse oneself in the game.

Also, don't worry about the machine parts for railroads bit, anybody. It's only .1 MP or so.

The US Civil War isn't happening, though. The Reps came to power in 1856, did that screw it up?

In most games vanilla is referred to the game without add ons. Like vanilla Civ3, without Conquests, for example.
BTW I am not a native English speaker so can someone explain to me why it is called vanilla? I only know it is a flavour of ice cream or milkshakes!

Because the flavour Vanilla in terms of ice cream is considered plain, original, normal since it is the most widely eaten ice cream flavour. Hence why it is used to define Victoria 1.03c.

A very interesting thread here. I know that those of us who are directly responsible for developing the mod are not in the habit of creating the sense that not using VIP makes a player "inferior" in any way. How others react on here is of course beyond our control, but I think I can speak for Generalisimo and Tyrel68 and all the other contributors to VIP when I say that while we very much hope people try our mod, we don't hold a grudge against anyone who decides they do not like it, though we do try to figure out the root of the issue and if it is something that can be customized so that the objectionable parts of the mod are not hindrances to parts that might be a welcome addition to the game for an individual player. That is one of the great things about mods, many of the elements can be modified to suit the individual taste of the player. But if in the end a player decides they don't like the mod, then that's perfectly fine with us.

Must agree. I contributed to VIP and I don't even play the mod. I didn't have to play the mod to get involved, nor was I ever hassled into playing the mod by those I worked with.

The mod is either for you or isnt. ;)

I actually offered to contribute myself, I have studied a lot of Russian history, and offered my services in writing events for that country, but ohgamer said the real work needed is doing the actual programming and scripting, so at least pro temp the help I could provide does not seem necessary. In fact, my offer to help in a capacity that does not require technical skills still stands. Even if I had wound up lending a hand, I probably would not switch over to the mod either. I say november has best articulated the objections we 1.03'ers have with the mod.

To be honest, no should need to explain why they play one version over the other to anyone. I think its bad sport to either look down on someone for doing something contry to what you do, or atempt to convince them to play your version because it is better. Im guessing from the bad vibes of this thread many 'vanilla' players feel a little persecuted. Though I must say I did find myself trying to explain why I play VIP to a vanilla player even though I never mentioned VIP or was in any way attempting to make them play VIP either (I felt a little persecuted myself). So I think that it works both ways.

How about a poll to see how many people play which VIP or unmodded Victoria?

Myself, I only now getting the hang of unmodded Victoria with small nations.

I once tried the Great War mod for HoI (1) but it wouldn't run. Otherwise I play the unmodded versions. I get the impression that some mods (for EUII) deviate a bit far into alternative history. I haven't looked into VIP yet, but I might in the future. I love events based on real events, no matter how trivial. In this regard, I think Victoria is Paradox' best game to date.

Well, I agree with the original statement the thread starter made, that we should always think that questions etc. are about 1.03c unless otherwise stated. It's the most logical really.

We shouldn't be divided into two camps, VIPers and non-VIPers, like some sort of "civil war". Instead we should put out a united front against those who don't play Victoria at all and convince them to play it (wich will probably lead to a sequel being far more likely ;) ).
Like the old saying goes: The more, the merrier! :)

precisely what i would have suggested, had you not suggested it first.

VIP has a whole subforum, if a member has a VIP-related question, be easier to just have him/her post there. Avoids the confusion in the GD forum thats seemingly at issue here

I say we vanilla loyalists drop the vanillia prefix and start refering to VIP as "Victoria Obese", "Victoria with a side of fries", or Victoria double-stuf".
We could say we play "young Victoria"
