well...I know some Ukrainians who might disagree with you on that account given the Russification policies in the nineteenth century that actively discouraged the use of Ukrainian (especially after 1880) and repressed manifestations of separate Ukrainian identity among the Ukraininan intelligentsia.
...
rather offtop but actually someone who really interested in some absolutely unnecessary animosity between ukrainian and russian people could say that, today many saying so for some unkown reason. Stupid nationalisation really was, a swell as fierce nationalization of Ukraina right now, as well as westernization under polish-lithuanina by three centuries earlier, as well as separation under horde before that, and no one arguing that ukrainian nationality is uniqe and independant, its just no other nations are so close then russian and ukraianian, ethnically and culturally, and there are no reason whatsoever to remember mistakes of the past only to say that ukraina could not be in the same country with Russia, and if it was that way it was occupation and repression and desinfranchising of poor ukrainian minorities and so on etc... its just was not this way. Ukrainans and Russians are brother nationalities in all meanings of it, and if some stupid rulers repressed Ukrainians they do it for their same stupidest reasons, as well they oftenly do the same with russians also btw... just nevermind

o
and if alex3 really opressed ukrainian language, it have to be adressed his only times for doing so, and proper event so, and nohow it makes ukrainains as some minority nationalities inside russian empire, they were concripted in same ways, have the same rights and duties as russians
and to fnish with off-top: all this super-duper uniqness of ukrainian language, if thats the matter, is also a rather dirt double standart

Few people are shaming anglosaxons for spreading their language in wels scotland and ireland, its just noticably more comfort usefull and just wide-spread then archaic celtic and scottish ones... i'm not trying to say that ukrainian language is not usefull, but if to be honest its usefullness right now lift on so high level by anti-russian nationalization, that this is just became like some parody there. Textbooks in schools and anti-russian propaganda on its very peak, just like a copy ofthose 19th century times

Also, can we PLEASE not go down the "Russian VS Ukrainian" path all over again? I am an ethnic Ukrainian who considers himself Russian and I deem these debates quite stupid. So, let's all just make love. With condoms. Because they keep the babies away.
if my french was not that awefull, you can see that i am in no way "anti-ukrainan", i was talking just about the thing that this "Russian VS Ukrainian" topic is already awfully rotten foreign product, from which already sick all of us and which is delivered by those who really wants some enmity between our people. I'm myself in 25% ukrainian, and did live every summer of my childhood near Nikolaev
