The despotism of Herjólfr illugi (1573 - 1621)

This is how i see this period to be defined. I dont have any events written yet.

Quick Summary

To summarise there are basically two "dynastic" lines that meet in 1573. One of which is the last in a line of military rulers called Óláfr skytja, and the last ruler of the mercantile 1st republic called Bjórn Þórarinson.

The rise to power

Herjólfr illugi should be introduced as a figure before he comes to power, say 5-6 years beforehand. This should also be dependant on (again) who is in power and the situation they are in. For example, if in the current game the ruler is Óláfr skytja, it would be wise to assume Herjólfr illugi is perhaps a trusted high ranking commanding officer (dormant leader?). Alternatively if its Bjórn Þórarinson, perhaps he could be an "excellent minister" instead?

The grab for power

This seems relatively straightforward given the ages of the two differing monarchs in 1573. Bjórn Þórarinson, as a mercantile ruler, is unlikely to have been younger than 30 when he took the reigns of power (perhaps even older). In addition to his 43 year long reign this would make him 73 as a minimum. It is likely that given his advanced age he was to die in his bad with Herjólfr taking the reigns himself without a great deal of incident.

Óláfr skytja represents a different challenge. Reigning for only (1563-73) 10 years, and probably relatively young when he assumed overally control of the state may have been 40-50 in age, certainly no spring chicken but able enough to continue governing for sometime. In this instance we should ideally set up Herjólfr to be the power hungry, overly ambitious officer who goes over the limit and assasinates Óláfr claiming the governance of the state for himself.

Herjólfr, and his ambition

Regardless of how he comes to power he should enact the same events. These events in my mind should drastically increase centralisation as he attempts to become nothing more than a virtual dictator. This should lead to instability, revolt risks, but perhaps generally the overall support of the army. The chief reason is perhaps Herjólfr has massive expansionism on his mind (against the natives). He should also fund anti-european activities?

His downfall

This is where earlier events come into play. If Herjólfr was a military man then the kdm of vinland is founded, if he was a mercantile/gov't man then the 2nd republic is founded. Both scrap the "thing" and replace it with something a little more appropriate to this day and age.

In the 1610's we need to start introducing, depending on earlier events, those that plot his downfall. This means introducing Hálfdan ofláti as a figure (dormant military leader?) that deposes of Herjólfr like he himself did in 1573. He founds the kingdom of vinland as a more moderate state, its power checked by parlement. Herjólfr's past actions are reversed or corrected.

The alternative is the succession of Hafnar-Einarr Hrafnason, who founds the more moderate second republic of vinland. This republic scraps the "thing" and replaces it with a relatively modern senate. Herjólfr's past actions are reversed or corrected.

Well, I am a little bit concerned about your overhauling of the scenario, but I have faith you can pull it off successfully. ;)

Unfortunately, I will be unable to post for the next few days, as my house is flooded and I must live in a hotel for 3-5 days for people to dry it out (don't take my absence as a lack of interest).

Please dont be worried, all of your work has been included. I have amended, edited or otherwise altered a lot of everybodies work to ensure it all "adds up".

All i can say is play the latest beta, try the three possible paths (merchant, military, heretic) and see what you think. I am confident it will feel "right". If it is considered too radical then you have the 5.0a release and can scrap what i have done.

Sorry to hear you got flooded!

First Beta 6 Playtest - Notes and Changes

Interesting is what i will say. Alot of the new events i have have added fired absolutely fine. However a few things concerned/intrigued me which i am rectifying today.

New Natives

I added in a whole host of new natives and they "worked" out fine. I do need to ensure that certain groups hate each other as appropriate, as i found myself at the rough end of a massive native alliance one time :( which wouldnt have been "realistic". I need to ensure that most have their province knowledge scaled down a little as early on the game the mohawk allied with the Micmac (never a likely event).

I also need to organise new flags and shields for these new tribes.

Early Vinland Events

I need to add a new event to replace the removed alliance event. It seems awfully quiet until Þorvaldr Bjarnason shows up. I am open to ideas on this but otherwise will add an event of some non descript action occuring.

I plan to change several vinland events.

Event 17201 has been altered. The text remains the same, but i had to alter what occured on either action. It seemed silly to think the micmac would even care about what Þorvaldr Bjarnason was up to. Especially now they are all but a "regular" tribe. I also removed some of the other slider changes. Centralisation for example would not be altered by such an event, neither would land, quality or offense. Innovativeness and Mercantilism should stay of course in line with what the event was really about. Any reference to stability or colonists was also removed. This event is still highly important, but not so massive affecting as it was before.

Event 17202 has been significantly altered. When i played this last night i thought i would opt for the "exterminate all skraelings" option and found myself up against a massive native alliance. It did seriously impede my progress and i was never able to recover my relations with any of them at all. When i sat back and thought about this i decided to make it relevant to the micmac only. Its all about proximity, and though its likely the player has one or maybe two developing colonies, to declare war on all natives was (i believe) way over the top. If you try it out now you will see it seems a little more plausible. The event description has also been reworked to reflect those changes.

Event 17220 has been altered to keep in line with the changes made to 17202.

Event 17211 has been slightly adjusted, the relations to other tribes has been removed. It something they might be interested in, but certainly none of their business.

Several events have had their diplo slider effects corrected. many were missing the value field and hence were not firing at all.

I was unable to test the latter events because i ran out of time. I will start a new game tonight with these changes and see where it goes.

New Events

I successfully triggered a special colonial event based upon some changes to the colonynames.csv file i have made. This adds real flavour to the scenario and i have extended it today to all the other provinces that are selectable. You will see what happens when you colonise elements of the north american and canadian coastline. Its really quite cool i think :)

anyway... more to come soon... including the release this weekend (all being well).

No need for that. It's probably just as easy to add these to beta 6 - that way we can get the new release out to get some testing on the new setup too.

Ok... I have drafted the first outline of the rise of Herjorfr. Military wing only, but mercant will be similar:

#1# Introducing Herjólf (1566)

(Because of his long reign (48 years!) he must be pretty young when he is introduced. Lets say he is in his mid twenties (born ~1540))

"With increased trade and contact with Europe, it became common for the richer Nobles to send their sons back to the Old World as a part of their education. There they could study at the Universities, coming back to serve the Church, or they could receive military training by entering the service of a Lord.

As a son of a legendary military commander, and a distant relative of Óláfr skytja, it was natural for Herjólfr Arnason to choose a military education by serving the king of <insert friendly country here>. When he returned to Vinland upon the death of his father he had already built a reputation as a skillful commander and a ruthless leader, despite his young age. Being released from his vows by the <friendly country again> king, he now seeks office in Vinland."

+Give him a military command
- wake leader (Herjólfr Arnason - quite good, medium rank, time: 1566-1570)

+Apoint him Governor of X
- Raise taxvalue by 1 in X (reduce in 1570)
- Raise manpower by 1 in X (reduce in 1570)
- Add RR to X (reduce in 1570)

+Grant him an Earldom
- Raise taxvalue by 1 in X, Y and Z (reduce in 1573?)
- Raise manpower by 1 in X, Y and Z (reduce in 1573?)
- Add 1 RR to X, Y and Z (reduce in 1573?)

#2# Herjólf seeks influence (1570)

(Herjólf seeks promotion - need different events, depending on the choices above...)

#2.1# Herjólf seeks influence (Military commander)

(Following his service as a field commander, Herjólf seeks more influence)

"Arriving in the Vinland military system four years ago, the young and ambitous Herjólf quickly made an impact. With adapting modern strategies and tactics, his units were soon considered the elite of the armed forces. It is apparant that he is a rising star; how can we best use his skills?"

+Appoint him Duke of the Realm (high commander)
- wake leader (Herjólfr Arnason - quite good, top rank, time: 1570-1573)
- add 250? to MIL
- add 1? to quality

+Grant him an Earldom, an a seat in the Council
- Raise taxvalue by 1 in X, Y and Z
- Add RR to X, Y and Z (reduce in 1573)
- add 500? to MIL

#2.2# Herjólf seeks influence (Governor)

(Following his service as a Governor, Herjólf seeks more influence)

"Appointed Governor of X four years ago, the young and ambitous Herjólf quickly made an impact. With reforms of the administration of his province, and an iron grip on the populace he improved the efficiency of the government, although to much resentment among the people. However, it is apparant that he is a rising star; how can we best use his skills?"

+Grant him an Earldom
- Raise taxvalue by 1 in X, Y and Z
- Add 1? RR to X, Y and Z (reduce in 1573?)
- add 250? to infra

+Grant him an Earldom, an a seat in the Council
- Raise taxvalue by 1 in X, Y and Z
- Add 2? RR to X, Y and Z (reduce in 1573?)
- add 400? to infra
- add 1 (or 2?) to monarch ADM

#2.3# Herjólf seeks influence (Earl)

(Following his service as an Earl, Herjólf seeks more influence)

"Granted the Earldom of X four years ago, the young and ambitous Herjólf quickly made an impact. With reforms of the administration of his domain, and an iron grip on the populace he improved the efficiency of the government, although to much resentment among the people. However, it is apparant that he is a rising star; how can we best use his skills?"

+Grant him an Earldom, an a seat in the Council
- Raise taxvalue by 1 in X, Y and Z
- Add 2? RR to X, Y and Z (reduce in 1573)
- add 400? to infra
- add 1 to monarch ADM

+Appoint him Drottsete, and leader of the Council
- Add 3? RR until 1573
- add 600? to infra
- add 1 to monarch MIL
- add 2 to monarch ADM

#3# Herjólf grabs the power (1573)

(Regardless of the previous events.)

"While Óláfr skytja seemed to trust and even appreciate the young Herlólf, there were evil plans being laid. Dissatisfied with the king's reluctance to reform the government of Vinland, and his lenient treatment of the native Skrælings were among the reasons for the conspiracy. Supported by a group of young nobles Herjólfr Arnason has assassinated the king, and usurped the power!"

+The king is dead, long love the king!
- Herjorf becomes king
- reduce RR by 3 in X, Y and Z
- add 2? RR for 10 years
- add 400? to infra

For those that don't know... (including me until a few minutes ago!)...

Drottsete was originally the title of the official among the king's followers who had the responsibility for the royal household but later it was the highest official office a man could hold in the nation. He functioned as a regent when the ruling head was underage or during the Union with Denmark and Sweden when the King was absent. The first who had the title of Drottsete in Norway was Erling Vidkunsson from 1323-32 and the last was Sigurd Jonsson who was appointed in 1439. One of Gråtopp's ancestors, Knight Ivar Ogmundsson Rova from Hesby of Finnøy in Ryfylke was a contemporary and colleague of Erling Vidkunsson. According to Norges Historie, Ivar served as Drottsete in the 1330s. A modern word for Drottsete is Seneschal.

Yep. The English title of Earl is an anglicized form of Jarl - I'll go for Jarl in the events... (done scripting the parts up to the takeover of Herjólfr now )

In my "redoing" of the earlier events, i am attempting to trigger an event based upon the death of a leader... the trigger however does not appear to work.

Here is what i am attempting to do:

event = {
id = 17202
trigger = {
NOT = {
leader = 17510
}
}
random = no
country = U10
name = "The Skraeling Ambush And The Widow's Response"
desc = "EVENTHIST17202"
style = 1
date = { day = 1 month = february year = 1430 }
deathdate = { day = 31 month = december year = 1439 }

As you can see i am editing that event to trigger when Þorvaldr Bjarnason dies... annoyingly it doesnt work. Any tips?
