The despotism of Herjólfr illugi (1573 - 1621)
This is how i see this period to be defined. I dont have any events written yet.
Quick Summary
To summarise there are basically two "dynastic" lines that meet in 1573. One of which is the last in a line of military rulers called Óláfr skytja, and the last ruler of the mercantile 1st republic called Bjórn Þórarinson.
The rise to power
Herjólfr illugi should be introduced as a figure before he comes to power, say 5-6 years beforehand. This should also be dependant on (again) who is in power and the situation they are in. For example, if in the current game the ruler is Óláfr skytja, it would be wise to assume Herjólfr illugi is perhaps a trusted high ranking commanding officer (dormant leader?). Alternatively if its Bjórn Þórarinson, perhaps he could be an "excellent minister" instead?
The grab for power
This seems relatively straightforward given the ages of the two differing monarchs in 1573. Bjórn Þórarinson, as a mercantile ruler, is unlikely to have been younger than 30 when he took the reigns of power (perhaps even older). In addition to his 43 year long reign this would make him 73 as a minimum. It is likely that given his advanced age he was to die in his bad with Herjólfr taking the reigns himself without a great deal of incident.
Óláfr skytja represents a different challenge. Reigning for only (1563-73) 10 years, and probably relatively young when he assumed overally control of the state may have been 40-50 in age, certainly no spring chicken but able enough to continue governing for sometime. In this instance we should ideally set up Herjólfr to be the power hungry, overly ambitious officer who goes over the limit and assasinates Óláfr claiming the governance of the state for himself.
Herjólfr, and his ambition
Regardless of how he comes to power he should enact the same events. These events in my mind should drastically increase centralisation as he attempts to become nothing more than a virtual dictator. This should lead to instability, revolt risks, but perhaps generally the overall support of the army. The chief reason is perhaps Herjólfr has massive expansionism on his mind (against the natives). He should also fund anti-european activities?
His downfall
This is where earlier events come into play. If Herjólfr was a military man then the kdm of vinland is founded, if he was a mercantile/gov't man then the 2nd republic is founded. Both scrap the "thing" and replace it with something a little more appropriate to this day and age.
In the 1610's we need to start introducing, depending on earlier events, those that plot his downfall. This means introducing Hálfdan ofláti as a figure (dormant military leader?) that deposes of Herjólfr like he himself did in 1573. He founds the kingdom of vinland as a more moderate state, its power checked by parlement. Herjólfr's past actions are reversed or corrected.
The alternative is the succession of Hafnar-Einarr Hrafnason, who founds the more moderate second republic of vinland. This republic scraps the "thing" and replaces it with a relatively modern senate. Herjólfr's past actions are reversed or corrected.
