Who hath believed.....
Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
Isaiah 53:1
Before continuing my account of Vinalnd’s rise to power I see that I need to set the record straight regarding two territorial acquisitions. Between the war of the three emperors and the wars of national vengeance we annexed Thuringen. The Duke of Thuringen had already annexed Wurtemburg whereupon we admitted him to our alliance and politically annexed both provinces. With that acquisition Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands stood alone as the only independent Protestant states. I began to find myself thinking in terms of establishing a Protestant super state, though the Netherlands continued to resist the idea at great cost to our treasury. During the wars of national vengeance we also acquired the two provinces remaining to the Duke of Burgundy, namely Burgonne and Picardie by force of arms.
Now, as I have previously mentioned we were planning a war against Spain by the end of 1676. We declared war in March of 1677. Initially Spain stood alone as always, though her allies eventually rallied to her side. In April the Incas finally honored their alliance and were promptly annexed. We sent two cavalry forces out from Lima and Ayucho. One went north and the other went south. Along the way we seized and annexed the Spanish held gold provinces of Potosi and Tucmann as well. France joined in the war only to lose Berri and Champagne. Poland declared war in June and by November they had an envoy in Vaestervik begging us to relieve them of the chore of governing Polotsk and Belarus. The war of the Incan annexation took less than ten months and netted what remained of the last independent skraeling empire as well as four rich provinces in Europe. Denmark joined the fray and ceded Skane and Ostlandet. I hoped for an opportunity to settle down and digest our conquests though it was not to be.
In February of 1681 the Danes decided to declare war on Russia. When the Russian ambassador informed us we promptly declared war on Denmark and her Persian allies. Though the war with Denmark netted the provinces of Tripolitiana, and Narvik, Persia proved an utterly frustrating foe. We were unable to come to grips with them and ultimately settled for a status quo peace after they had burned a trading post in Indus. Our Dutch allies took full advantage and established a colony in Indus.
In April of 1681 the third member of the Danish alliance, the Mamelukes of Egypt, sent an ambassador to Torkel and demanded that we lift the siege of Copenhagen and sign a status quo peace with Denmark. Aud tried mightily to stifle a giggle but failed. When Torkel rejected the demand the envoy repeated it whereupon Aud laughed out loud. After the third rejection of the same demand the envoy presented Torkel with a scroll containing a declaration of war. Aud was laughing so hard tears streamed down her face. Torkel read the declaration and handed it to me. After reading it I smiled and said, “Egypt will be a worthy addition to the Union of Vinland. Welcome to the capital of your new homeland!” The Mamelukes fell almost as easily as I predicted. We had to send forces from India as well as thinning our ranks by sending a force of Marines originally recruited in Zacetacas from Vendee to Tunisia. After their conquest of Tunisia and Tripolitianna an aspiring songwriter in the corps penned the now familiar words, “From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Triploi…” With the conquest of Jordan in March of 1682 the last Mameluke province was ours. We promptly annexed them and sent missionaries to Jordan. As I looked at the map it seemed that the ancient dream of re-establishing crusader states was within our reach!
In the meantime we had one more war to fight. Sweden declared war in February of 1682. Within four months we settled our accounts with Sweden by relieving them of Smealand to the northeast of Skane.
I longed for a period of peace and quiet but once again it was not to be. Sweden declared war on Russia in March of 1689. We thinned our garrisons in southern Sweden and relieved them of one province. Before we could settle a peace treaty with them Poland had an ambassador in Vaestervik with a declaration of war. Poland ultimately ceded Lithuania and Posen but not before Denmark and France joined the fray. Against France we achieved mixed results. I wanted to relieve them of Apulia and Vestfold, thus setting the stage for their ultimate extermination but our landing in Apulia was a bloody failure. We settled for Vestfold and Franche Comte, which at least isolated the Ile de France from the southern provinces.
Denmark was to be a different story. Once we achieved the goal of conquering all of Norway I saw that Denmark consisted of Copenhagen and Gotland. We had to make two landings on Gotland and our Russian allies sent a general to take command of the first siege of Copenhagen forcing us to retake the city when they settled for peace with Denmark in exchange for 189,000 ducats. By April of 1691 I was in the capital of my ancient homeland from which place I sailed to Gotland to negotiate with Christian V upon the fall of his last fortress. Three times I asked him to swear fealty to Torkel. Three times he refused. He was summarily beheaded, though that only happened once. A terrified Danish jarl by the name of Petersen was asked to swear fealty to the Emperor. I only had to ask once.
As Aud and I toasted the addition of our ancient homelands to the Union we received news that Algeria had declared war and had brought their Turkish allies into the fray. I commandeered a ship and sailed to Egypt. Our forces in Jordan and Egypt promptly liberated Jerusalem from the heathen yoke. We raised forces as quickly as possible in India, Egypt, and France. We thinned our forces in France and sent another expedition to North Africa. In the middle of this war Persia, though already at war with the Turks, declared war on us! We seized Iraq and their province bordering India and knocked them out of the war. We settled separate deals with Persia and Turkey (after storming Constantinople!) and focused all of our attention on our one remaining foe. From Turkey we settled for Sinai and Samaria, but at last the stars and stripes flew over Jerusalem in which place Aud and I toasted the 200th anniversary of our service to Vinland.
Algeria had waged war competently for a time but they did not have the means to stand against us indefinitely. In February of 1692 we added yet another North African territory to Vinland’s estate. Once again I hoped for a period of peace and quiet, but it was not to be….
