Rule, Britannia!
A Brittonic "Dev Diary"
A Brittonic "Dev Diary"
Hello everyone, and welcome to another Dev Diary/Preview brought to you by VIET team! Development of 1.6.0 is in full swing and we've been knee-deep in bug-hunting and bug-fixing as of late, but today we decided to take some time to tell you about the features coming your way in the upcoming update to spice up you appetite (by the way, be sure to mention our new and invaluable dedicated tester AnaxXiphos in your praise!).
While much of CK2-related discourse as of late has been eastward, to the lands of India, we'd like to raise your attention back to the west for a while longer to tell you about a land of mists and legend, of invaders and defenders, clashing civilisations and faiths and where the food tends to invariably suck no matter who is king. Today we will tell you about Britain and the Old Britons.
No! Not those britons!
Nope, think older...
What in the.... yes, something like that... kinda... I guess...
Indeed, Kiera Knightleys aside, the theme of 1.6.0 will be the native brythonic cultures of Britain, which excludes the relative newcomer anglo-saxons, as well as the hibernian/gaelic peoples, aka, the Irish and the Scottish (who will get their own update later down the line). Who does that leave then? Well, those would be the Welsh, the Bretons, the Cumbrians and the Cornish. "But wait!" you may say, "the cornish? I've been following VIET for some time and I know they've always been considered too small a culture to include!" Well, you are right, dear VIETeran, but like in any good ol' dictatorship the rule makers also get to be the rule breakers so just this once we're forgoing the rule and finally including the much requested cornish culture.
By the power of corn!
The brittonics are the direct ancestors of the insular gaelic tribes who managed to avoid conquest and settlement during the Anglo-Saxon invasions and as such much of their culture is reminiscent of their ancient gaelic pagan traditions. In VIET, we explored that by giving each of the four cultures some unique pieces of flavor representative of their cultural traits. As such, the Welsh will have the opportunity to celebrate the Gwyl Mabsant and play several games such as Bando, as well as being payed a visit by the Mari Lwyd. In the north, cumbrian characters will borrow a page from the vikings who recently have been raiding their neighbourhood and erect Hogback stones to honor their fathers while pious bretons will have the opportunity to fulfil their duty to perform the Tro Breizh pilgrimage and visit the towns of the seven founding saints of Brittany. Finally, our newcomer cornish have a special system in their homeland of Cornwall as their ruler will have to deal with the stannary charter related to the tin miners and, on the lighter side, will have the opportunity to visit the town of Padstow every May to celebrate the (in)famous 'Obby 'Oss festival and don the suit of the Old 'Oss for a well spent day of chasing fair maidens around town (or be chased around, if the ruler is female!).
What can possibly go wrong?
Better build an inn and get those tourism gold coins before Hilton does!
Besides those unique events and decisions, all cultures touched upon in this update have access to some unique features of their own, such as the ability to erect High Crosses or, in the case of breton characters, erect Calvary Statues. You character can also find Holy Wells in their demesne from where you can get a nice blessing (but beware, with time these wells may fade in obscurity!) All and all, playing with either a welsh, cumbrian, breton or cornish character should now provide a well fleshed out and flavorful experience, together with the wackiness and obscure references that have become beloved VIET traits.
Black Friday Blessings! Get them before they're gone!
But of course, not everything can be fun all the time and it can only take so long until a brittonic ruler realises that he won't truly achieve greatness until he does something about those pesky invaders from across the sea... And thankfully we provide just the goal, as cornish characters can right old wrongs by reforming the Kingdom of Dumnonia and, most importantly, all brittonic rulers now have the possibility of restoring the Arthurian Kingdom Of Britain and make legend come alive by achieving a status akin to the Once And Future King! Should you achieve this sizable feat, you will even find more flavorful options at your disposal such as the possibility of re-creating the Knights Of The Round Table and inviting martial-minded courtiers to this sacred fraternity.
But will Merlin be there?
That will be all for this Dev Diary. I hope we increased your appetite for the upcoming VIET update and that you will soon be enjoying your adventures to reclaim Britain and try to beat the Padstow record of girls catched and dragged under your cape. Happy gaming!
Here's some proper Brittonic warriors to apologise for reminding you of that God-awful movie.
