Videos, audio books etc. about Roman history

As the game won't be released before 2019, there's still plenty of time left to fill. What better preparation than studying Roman history?

I recently stumbled upon a podcast series on youtube when I was looking for some background storytelling while playing "Total War 2: Rome".

In total it's 50+ hours from 753 bc to 476 ad. I'm almost halfway through the series, wonderful background entertainment while playing some games.

Anyways, felt like sharing this gem.

Would instead suggest the excellent series made by FlashPoint History.
Cant stand the others crack,fizzle, and popple, not to mentioning his
rather irriating voice.

If you want something more mature i would suggest listening to
the excellent FlashPoint History

If anyone wants a short history of the Roman Republic, not wanting to spend a lot of time reading a 400+ page book on the subject, then David M. Gwynn's "The Roman Republic: A Very Short Introduction" is good and covers the aspects of the Roman Republic in a short (168 pages) yet detailed way.

I've listened to Mike Duncan's "History of Rome" podcast, from beginning to end, at least three times now. There's just nothing like it anywhere else. It's fantastic. I'm also going to buy the book version on Amazon just to support the guy, it's on my wishlist there.

When Imperator: Rome releases, I'm probably going to listen to the whole thing again whilst playing the game.

I am currently reading Mary Beard's S.P.Q.R which has already been mentioned & would also recommend the history of Rome podcast also mentioned before....

I have quite enjoyed 'The Fall Of The West: The Death Of The Roman Superpower' by Adrian Goldsworthy previously (it is in depth but stays engaging....although most content is focused much later than the Republic) and 'Rubicon: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Roman Republic' by Tom Holland which is much 'lighter' and provides a concise overview with an engaging narrative.

Seriously? NOBODY is going to say colleen mccullough's books on Rome durin the republic? Come on! Those books are basically this game, but on a book!

You CANNOT play this game without reading those. You wanna know what game of thrones during the roman republic feels like? Read 'em. Awesme thing? They are completelly historica. The go from Mario, Sila, to Ceasar. Explaining every detail of how the republic worked. The legal system, all the politics, the roman families, the intregue, everything, chacater after character, consul after consul as you move through history.

Omg, how did I not know this was a thing. I am a big fan of Mike Duncan and had no idea one of his listeners took up the mantle after he ended history of Rome.

Going with the Mike Duncan theme I would suggest picking up his book " The storm before the storm"

I tried reading it but didn't find it engaging at all, quite the opposite, I was amazed at how jumbled the narrative was. I gave up with it.
