just saw it here. Will take a while, but I still need to outline the framework in more detail before I can even start doing the research. I want the framework to be outlined as much as possible before I research any tanks in order to prevent preventable subconscious bias as much as possible. Also it makes researching easier, because I know exactly what I am looking for.- 1

I was not too happy with that video, mostly because the main source Davies mostly took Vegetius verbatim adding some other facts, why some other scholars highly critizied Vegetius about having a very nostalgic/positive view, but they were talking about recruitment. Furthermore, Webster and Bohec both were similar to Davies, but those did just "general" overviews.Awesome vids on you page.

Oh, just the point that many legions' training wasn't uniformly the same quality or intensity. (Natural really if we consider the human factor)
I think it was Adrian Goldsworthy in 'In the Name of Rome: The Men Who Won the Roman Empire' who quotes primary sources for highlighting how the successful generals paid attention to pre campaign training. There were many Roman generals that didn't and paid for it.
Caesar is another good training example.
That said, I'm referring more to the mid-late republic era; but you did quote Cicero too

yeah, in Republican times a general was more a "military entrepreneur" so to speak. Also there was often a lack of pay, something Augustus changed.
I quoted Cicero, because his quote clearly reflects the attitude of training.
