Heh, I'm doing 'War and Peace 1877 - 1941' for my history course, and I showed this game to my teacher(who is incidentally a huge fan of Otto von Bismarck)... He told me to go and buy revolutions so that it covers Weimar Germany too

I'm of the opinion that Victoria is infectious. Two guys in my class were watching me play it, and they went home and ordered it off the internet. Of course now I'm just waiting for the inevitable 'how do you play this game?' questions.

When I first played Vicky I thought wow, this is the kind of game I've been dreaming of for years I just wish there were some options to make Texas legitimately playable. Then I loaded VIP and while it took a bit to get used to the economic and colonization model I was quite happy with the result. I just loaded Revolutions last week and now Texas is even playable in Vanilla. When I get a little bored of Ricky I'll load VIP on it as well and start all over again.

My first exposure to the Paradox world was EU2 and while I love the game little issues such as inconsistency in combat results (10K infantry and 10K cavalry on defense being defeated by a force half their size with a lower land tech level) simply frustrated me. I still play EU2, but my wife and kids groan when they hear the intro music because they know I’m going to be yelling at the Mac like it’s the PC. I recently nabbed the strategy six-pack and while I have an interest in CK and HOI2 DD they will rarely get played because Victoria is so stellar.

Most of my initial complaints against Victoria were based on the fact that some small nations (Texas, Transvaal, et al) were unplayable without using the “Neville” cheat at some point in time, but user VIP and Revolutions have fixed most of those complaints. Not only is Victoria the type of game I would write if I could write code, but every addition (Revolutions, VIP, et al) just makes it that much more enjoyable.

Ditto I first played EUI and that destroyed my dream of making computer games as I realize that's all I ever wanted and more.

Then Victoria is simply in another league. Not in my wildest dream can I make such an innovation. Simply brilliant.

Victoria is definitely one of the best games ever made. And better than every other Paradox game. The thing which sucks is just how dated it is now. VIP is pretty boring for me these days too, as it's essentially the same thing over and over. VIP is still the best way to play vicky, no doubt, but I just wish vicky had the eu3 style engine. I really love the MM style of events over vicky/vip's hard grinding ones.

Just so long as they can avoid the EU3 style graphics. I can't stand those.

Victoria never gets boring for me. I've put in THOUSANDS of hours (one of the many benefits of working nights) and while I do get burn out from time to time I never really get bored with it.

Check out the link in my sig. Remember that EU3 was Paradox's first foray into 3D. They are improving. Also, it is not like Victoria's terrain map is usable at all.

 The Vicky and CK terrain maps must be the worst things I have ever seen.

No the Vicky terrain map isn't very useful, but the political map is and none of them have those horrid octagons that EU3 has. The 3-D graphics are bothersome, but if they were used on a map without octagons it would be less jarring for me.

Back on Topic: Victoria is still the best game ever IMHO.

Besides, the terrain map is so easily fixable. Why even bother to complain?

Rename: Victoria\map\tiles.bmp to something else.
Download colorscales.rar
Extract and replace the colorscales.csv file in the same directory as tiles.bmp

Enjoy the marvelous new HOI-type terrain map with easily discernible terrain colors.:D

I swear by it! Only $19.95! Not sold in stores! Order now and also receive this FREE POP_Splitter_v5.5.rar as our FREE gift to you!

OK. Sorry. It's F-f-f-f-FRIDAY!, and I'm feeling fine.

Yeah! Do as RELee says and you'll also have a faster game.

P.S. Rename the tiles.bmp file something like "tiles.old" or "tiles.bak". This way you can put it back on if you like. Alternatively... just delete it!

Definitely. I really love the Vicky map graphics. I even love the way the divisions have men in lines rather than a single unit :)

FFZ said:
The pace, the time period, all of it, building a steel fleet, a massive army, a huge empire is all fun.

Definitely. It was by far the most dramatic time in human history as far as I'm concerned. I'm obessed with the 19th century and the early 20th century.
