I just wish the A.I. was a little more competitive. It never feels right when I'm playing as Prussia and I steamroll France with a 2:1 advantage

Multiplayer games solve the problem. Surely playing with other people require a group of reliable people who can spend several months for one single game (taken that a regular session is 4 hours a week).

Well, lo-and-behold, I walked into Big Lots today and saw this for sale for... 6 bucks. Along with CK and HoI, but I already have those.

I'm probably going to get Revolutions eventually, but I'm gonna stick to playing the base game (well, base + VIP .45) for the time being till I learn it and everything.

I have to say, once I figured out what was going on with the interface, I found it really intuitive. Everything's basically in that sidebar, and after that, it's a tree going from general to specific. Always. Looks incredibly consistent and unified once you get used to it.

We'll see if this knocks CK out of my top spot. I doubt it, but all those fiddley little details look enticing (I'm way too ADD nowadays to play games without about a million little parts that I can mess with).

The trouble is that it's an incredibly hard game to learn. I bought it the other day and despite having played it a few times and read lots of guides; I'm still utterly clueless, helpless and just . . . confused.

I was that way at first too, and sometimes still am, but I feel I've learned a lot (while still learning). Steep learning curve but I'm glad there is rather than a less sophisticated game underneath. The complexity is doable and can be learned and adds hugely to the game. At first I did mostly the economics, colonizing and military. But I still wanted to know what made things happen and why with politics, govts, plurality, political/social research/inventions. I printed a lot from Wiki and from these forums and refer to that when playing.

An example is that I used to be confused what to do during elections and the various questions pop up. But I learned to answer those to try and influence elections towards the party I favored, or just as a way to move the populations in other directions. I don't do much other manipulation of pops though, other than that. But there's more that can be done. Also after researching techs and what can happen and how to deal with those. Such as the cultural tech invention that has you decide on Clericalism vs Anti-Clericalism; Nepotism vs Bureaucracy; Meritocracy vs Aristocracy and I think one other question. Some good info on Wiki and these forums on dealing with those, the effects of them and how to decide.

I just thought I'd reiterate this here.

EU is a simpletons game compared to Victoria. It has absolutely no depth :p Not even HoI, despite having alot going for it and being quite awesome, can compare to Vicky.

I've been playing this game since when... 2003? I have no idea when it came out anymore, and I still don't really know and understand everything :p I keep going back to the vicky wiki manual and assorted stuff on a regular basis. For example, I just recently really understood RGO's and migration.

To sum up, victoria has amazing replayability. I probably wouldn't even have failed college classes if it wasn't for being unable to go to sleep because of this game. Like now... it's like 3 in the morning, and I just can't stop civilizing the world!!!! Grrrr!

Victoria is, simply put, a game that deserves to be played and played again.

"Conciousness" and "militancy" are some of the best concepts I have seen in any strategy game! The electoral system is well done... the thrill of having many political parties (with their own agenda) compete for power is really entertaining. Industrial and economical development are also very satisfying.

I admit that the learning curve is a bit high and the interface is not user friendly, but like someone said before: "Victoria is a developed taste".

So, maybe it will take many tries, but if you persevere, it will be very, very. rewarding... ;)

Well, I can locate reviews for Victoria going back to December of '03, so it sounds like you've had the game since the world was new.;)

EDIT: I've located two sites announcing that the release date was on November 18 of 2003.

Not that it's important. I'm just saying...

You are absolutely wrong, it is NOT "one of the greatest games ever". It is THE greatest game ever. Especially with the improvements project mod (I haven't played vanilla in ages). It should be used in schools to teach political science.

By the way, question. If you have the no time limit mod, can you actually have events that take place after 1936? If yes, imagine a mod that takes you from 1936 to 2036. Replace the USA tag with some other one to remove the immigration bonus, make all cultures long range (by having fewer types, replacing some of the european cultures), maybe edit the map so Europe is not off-reach to immigrants (is that even possible?), and have no "uncivilized" nations.
Sorry but the greatest game ever is HoI2 DD-A.

But Ricky is a close runner up

Choosing the "best game ever" is subjective.

But yeah, Victoria is in that pantheon.

I do not know any other game which had the sheer ambition that Victoria has. Sure, other games from Paradox come close, but this... This is another beast entirely. Playing it made me read much more about the late 17th century and the whole of the 18th.

I guess that the whole aspect of truly building a nation that puts it so apart from the rest. The fact that yes, everyone has a culture, an ideology, a religion, need for goods, and something to say about what's going on in the country is very daunting at first. And then when you think you mastered it, comes a pesky war and forces you to adapt all that knowledge into carrying your nation through. And then when you think you know how to fight and handle your country, you come to the forums trying to brag and then see that your beloved nation that took so much toil and sweat actually sucks and doesn't measure to a fifteenth of it's true potential.

Then you grumble, load up the savegame, something bad happens and you get so pissed off that you quit and turn the game down for a while.

Two days later, you have read some AARs, did some research on relevant subjects of the XIX Century, such as the Crimean War, the Franco-Prussian War, Dutch presence in Indonesia, the march into Australia, the War of the Triple Alliance, the Berlin Congress, the Liberal Revolutions... And a spark happens. Your inner statesman rises from the darkness of your mind, as you read the history and start rambling: "Silly Russians... or "Kleinedeutschland my arse, AUSTRIA IS PART OF GERMANY!"

Your inner statesman takes control. You sit back on your computer chair, go to desktop, and contemplate the shiny Victoria icon.

And then friends, there is no turning back... :)

Until you read about VIP. Hahahaha :D

Well, you are sort of lost on that issue. EU3 was the first game Paradox developed where the AI was designed to try to be competitive (with some success) - all the earlier games were severely hindered in that regard not only by less effort spent on the tactical AI but also because of the large amount of national guidance crippling any chance of the strategic AI being anywhere near competitive (though, to be fair, the strategic AI was usually so weak that this was just the final nail in the coffin rather than the major reasons).

Still, Victoria is a good game after the patches - but nowhere near the truly great game it has/had the potential to be.

It is certainly an epic game, much like other Paradox games. IMO this is probably the most in-depth one as it gives you loads of options on running your country from the economy to politics. It definatly has a steep-learning curve but if you can get over it, it is definatly worth it.

My first game was as......Argentina I think and I totally crumpled with revolts popping up all over due to my bad managing of the economy. Cue a few games later when actually know what I am doing and I turn Sweden from a second rate power to the great and mighty colonial empire of Scandinavia with an almost permanent economic boom and the whole country being industrialised and an army that makes even the likes of GB scared.

VIP is a must as it adds so much more to the game from new events to countrys. Also makes the game slightly harder but even if you are new I would recommend it with the many new features avaible.

It's deterministic to an extent, but that's quite comforting. I'm used to CK, where the gameworld within ten years is radically different and by a few centuries of playing; the Mongols are jackbooting over Iceland and the King of Frisia is leading a crusade against the Muslim leader of the Hospitallers Orders, based in the Shetland Islands.

I quite enjoyed playing the Great War scenario. It's teaching me about the warfare aspects quite well. I've been unable to win so far. I lose as Russia and as Germany, Russia simply bulldozes Austria and leaves me to die.

Same! HoI2: DD got one just recently... so I'm hoping whoever is working on it for Vicky will be done soon as well. REALLY hoping for Johan to give us all some information on expected completion dates (if they are at a stage where this seems likely enough to forecast).

To answer the OP's question: Yes, Vicky is one of the greatest games ever!

But you know what?

IT IS THE GREATEST GAME EVER WHEN PLAYING MP! I never, ever had so much fun with any other computer game.

And I played you like a violin
