Assuming we was going to have a huge MP game maybe even the maximum :)

What country would you have as first choice and what tactics would you select on the continent and in the rest of the world?

What problems would you expect to face?

Who would your natural allies be and who would you face off against? :)

In my case I would like to play as the forming Italian state :) The early years I would think would be dominated by careful diplomacy and attempting to benefit from French Habsburg tension to increase possessions.

If the French player is against a united Italy then :(, or if the Habsburg are ( and they probably should be :( ) but hopefully things will go according to plan. ;)

With the state formed I think moving either towards continuing the industrialization of the north of bringing the 19th century to the south. ;)

Then with a nice strong state, make a strong friend in Europe and take every opportunity to take something from the Ottoman Empire ( within reason of course ). I could see Libya or parts of the Aegean as attractive targets, or maybe Syria or Jerusalem. ;)

The horn of africa is historically attractive for Italy but if the other powers are preoccupied, who is to say we can't try to grab another possession or two and with a strong navy maybe a chinese concession or two is possible! :D

Right, with all that speculation half probably isnt possible but it gives a general idea of what I'd like to do if you ignore the details.

Anyone else wanna take a stab at it? ;)

We probably don't know enough about the game to speculate about more specific tactics, but if I GB, I would try to repeat history, if I am USA, I will grab more of Canada and Latin America, if Russia, try and crush Prussia in the crib :D

I would think that the USA would have a great amount of potential. With no other world powers in their hemisphere, they could potentially expand far beyond what happened in reality. I would think that their biggest challenge would be internal problems, as I am sure that the effects of the Civil War would be pretty bad. If the war can be kept from happening though, the USA should be able to dominate its hemisphere.

I think as Russia it would be best to form an alliance with Prussia, and diplomatically isolate Austria, giving me a free hand in the Balkans. Germany will eventually be united one way or another, and a Prussian dominated Germany isn't as dangerous as one dominated by Austria or France.

hmm..Maybe I'll be Texas or Mexico and fight you imperialist americans back. ;)

I like having small managable nations. I dont like spain much in EU2 because of the huge amounts of land it covers. :(

Italy, Prussia, or Mexico sound good to me. Though I somehow suspect if the game is historically accurate Mexico wont be much of a power for very long. :)

although I believe it could have had some potential if it had been stable and made better decisions on how to handle the northern lands.

What will be interesting is to watch people play off of each other's historical weaknesses. The UK streched so far apart that it has no firm foothold anywhere, the US with a civil war that could turn disasterous once people start openly aiding the confederate cause, etc. There will be no one country that will be able to dominate if the other players act unpredictably.

Myself, I can't wait to play a Japan that must either rapidly industrialize or face the fate of China....

I'll just be happy if the CSA player feels comfortable with giving me Washington, Oregon, and California for my loyal service against the Northern oppressors. :p

be interesting to see if a resourceful human can get into africa as Austria or Russia.

If so, will it make them a natural enemy to France and Britain? :)

I think or hope diplomacy is a larger part of the game than in EU2. In general I'd imagine wars would be a bit more devastating than we're used to, but I'm no expert on this period. Not in the warfare aspect.

I'd really like it not really to be in the interest of Russia to go after africa as much as influencing china and afghanistan and going down the pacific coast.

ah, the 1800s. :)

it will be fun to play shadow diplomacy throughout the entire game, build up for 70-80 years a massive industrial force and the military to back it...just to destroy each others empires in a blink of an eye. :D

probably as some country like portugal, or brazil. build internaly, play the diplomatic game as a minor. wait for the US civil war, watch as 1/2 the war dives at the US, then get the other 1/2 to attack that half for attacking the US and unsetting the balance:D

WW1 is probably going to start 50 years early in a lot of games:D

As Russia (my natural choice) I would totally neglect my navy. If the Japanese wanna rumble, let them come to Vladivostok. Also, in the Crimean War ships wouldn't have helped. If it comes to a bash with the Brits, India will be my main target.

In Europe I would try to stop German unification (duh...) and I would try to maintain a balance of power as much as possible. When a Great Power is loosing a war, I would probably jump in to rescue them in exchange for some cash, trade agreements or whatever. In don't see any real possibilities for expansion in Europe, only the Balkans and Sweden :) of course. Main objective: keep the Western border save (=keep neighbors devided). In short, not a bid for WC, just as realistic as possible.

Of course, I have no idea what possibilities the game will offer, so it's just a shot in the dark. If the game itself would make ahistorical outcomes very probable, I won't sit on my borders, that's for sure. China, you're going down!

I just saw people mentioning US strats, and it got me thinking... How will Vic constrain unhistorical strats, such as uber-expanding US? Don't get me wrong the US had it's manifest destiny and at all, but mostly expanded into empty or Indian territory. Of course, there were wars against Mexico and Spain, but besides these conflicts which were at least "justified" to the American public, I don't think expansion would have been tolerated. For example, for a game example, say the US player wants to invade Canada in 1890.... Will the game mechanics do anything to constrain or restrict him?

well with the US, before 1865 we had the whole problem of slave state vs free and afterwards a general objection of the population - at least the important ones - to the US undermining its national identity and mission by engaging in imperialism and oppressing others. It was justified in some cases by saying we were bringing democracy and culture to them but in general the US doesnt like to do that.

The question is now: will this be modeled in game and does it have to be? :)

I hope there isn't a concept of a bad boy war, not like in EU2. I don't like to see nations throw themselves at you suicidally because you're a "bad boy" But if the major powers begin to take some kind of action against you, harrassing your trade, blockading your ports, maybe impressing your seamen.. ;)

well stuff like that would be cool. Otherwise, I suppose a BB war would work though it'd ruin a bit of the flavor of the game for me. :)
