Basically, he says that he begs our pardon if he isn't allowed to write in Swedish, but he wants to congratulate all of the developers and beta-testers, that all of Paradox's games are wonderful and "top-ten" games, despite the petty nitpicks that so many people make when each game is released, and that he speaks for many in Finland in cheering for the game.

But you're correct; this forum is English-only.

Thanks Dark Knight

I am not originally Turku region but I live there and I know the difference between common language and local accent.

About the topic of this thread, I think Paradox has done propably so good job in province naming as it´s possible. Thought must admit this province "Spiff" in Poland is quite hilarious:rofl: (from where this name originates, can´t find anything like it on map  ). But I think it´s more important to make good game, than concentrate on issues like province naming.

I secretly wonder how many people think Sydney is the Capital of Australia:D probably the same amount that think Istanbul is the Capital of Turkey i guess.....

Are Characters being used for Arabic Towns? I hope So!grrrrr

And what about Japanese Provinces? Im warning you Paradox!!!

Lets just enjoy the game fellas;)

If you want to know the facts why we don't care, not many Americans can name all 50 states' capitols or even states! :D I'm pretty sure other people probably don't know names of all provinces in their countries. :D

People buy games to conquer countries, not to learn about geography!

Yeah, but learning geography is an inadvertant bonus. It's like learning about the Kalmar Union in EU2 a year before taking AP European History (or any related classes), or learning about the dangerously expansionist, civilization-smashing country of India in Civ3. :p

This game really gives me some good vibes.. at least Paradox has gotten some more practise with HoI before this ;)

Anyway, I was reading the german AAR and couldn't help but notice some severe flaws in the map.. OK, I know that map flaws are irrepairable, just like that siberian river you can't cross in HoI..

Anyway I fail to see any reason to deform Finland like you have done here.. well, it's part of Russia, but it still is Finland nonetheless.. Finland is supposed to have two arms and a head, not that kind of "random" line you have there now. It might be an "artistic" view of things, but why on earth does it have to be so blatantly wrong? And on top of everything, you've even misplaced Helsinki! Helsinki in Victoria is more like where Turku is supposed to be, and Turku has (somewhat) replaced Pori, and so forth..

That blod in the southern part of Finland is called Hanko, and Turku is west of it, Helsinki east of it. Quite simple.

Initially I was very happy to note that provinces are smaller and more numerous now, but that was only the first impression, as it doesn't seem to be a consistent reform. Wouldn't smaller provinces have given a bit more flexibility into the game? The Karelian isthmus should have been in two parts anyway..

Anyways, these are my impressions on the map, no biggie, I'm still very eagerly waiting for the release :) Just thought I'd voice some more opinnions since the can of worms had already been opened ;)

Apart from the fact that it's obviously a stereotype and as such is misleading, there are really lots of Americans who come here and do their best to prove it right. Maybe this topic deserves a ne thread? We'd have to keep it clean of flame wars, but the matter seems interesting somehow...
Cheers

Double standard

Hi all,

BMK1st,
Maybe YOU buy games 'to conquer stuff'
but not everyone does. Whoa! I bet you never thought of that! I buy games to particapate in my favorite thing... history.
I may buy Victoria, and if I do I will probably be more interested in building a powerfull, stable state than going around conquering people.

Patric,
Mind you, i am happy that your company is making historical strategy games, but i do not like the tone these boards have taken.
Tunch Khan and I have had our differences over the years but i respect what he tries to provide for these games.
If he makes a comment that can slightly be regarded as derogatory, everyone leaps down his throat including you.
On the same page as his 'insult' are several posts insulting him, Halibut and others like myself who feel that after four games set in Europe the map could be a teensy bit better.
I do not see you chastising those people.. curious.

I am not saying the following to start a flame or to make stuff up or anything like that and i will not post a follow up so don't bother responding to the following with a flame.

I belong to several other History/Historical gaming forums and it is commonly talked about that only yes-men are welcome on the Paradox boards.

Here is hoping that Victoria is better than HOI; my friends and I did not bother buying HOI.

Michael

Well said Lycortas2.

I've said in another thread that people should be intelligent enough to see the difference betwen constructive and destructive criticism. EU, HOI and Victoria probably are excellent games, a rarity in the strategy genre, but that is not to say they are perfect.

Suggesting improvements immediately results in a "Burn the heretic" movement of "how dare you complain blablabla".

I also wholeheartedly agree with your position regarding history. People who like Paradox games tend to be, in some way or another, historians. People who are fascinated and enthralled by history. People who care about historical accuracy and being true to authenticity. (and if anyone starts the idiotic political correctness argument here, I'll just say that my past posts have had nothing to do with that notion. I am a champion of accuracy and consistency above all else).

Given that, the attitude we have seen here:"who cares if there are spelling mistakes if we can conquer" sounds more like the thoughts of players of shoot em ups, just kill all your enemies, rather than the supposedly perfectionist and demanding history loving fans of the games.

Am I the only one who becomes annoyed if (just an example) Berlin is spelt Berrlinn or London is spelt Londun? Paradox doesnt like doing things sloppily, hence the many patches, but any potentially helpful criticism is construed as "hate posts" and I fear this will reduce the level of input around here to merely "good job" or "perfect". I am not saying compliments are wrong, I am only saying that there has to be both criticism and praise for any project to be successful.
