The ironclads might be useful if a naval war breaks out. Maybe Spain is planning to use the Philippines as a staging ground for an attack?

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty-One - Franco-Prussian War

toVDPvKr_o.jpg

As the 1st Fleet was being sent back to the colonies to deliver another fresh unit there was some news out of Europe.

spZWup2k_o.jpg

Spain had started a war with Yemen and the North German Federation had gone to war with France. On top of that Japan was somewhat upset with how much territory Spain was taking up in the Pacific.

eJLHlH0U_o.jpg

But the latter war was the main issue. As Germany and France had dragged their allies into the mess with them.

The North German Federation had brought in the United Kingdom, Wurttemberg, and Romania.

bHvNGMBH_o.jpg

The French had brought in the Russian Empire, Modena, the Papal States, Sardinia-Piedmont, and Switzerland.

At this point, at the start of the conflict, it was hard to guess which side would win. And it did make the idea of becoming a ally of Russia or the UK slightly unlikely.

So... ATL's Franco-Prussian War is a pan-European conflict?

The news bit on Yemen was hilarious. "We only intend to claim what is rightfully ours! How much is that? All of it"

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty-Two - Dinosaurs?

RieXO80a_o.jpg

In July the Province of Amari announced it had finished its railroads and that children would ride free. Children of the upper class, of course, not the dirty lower class scum. They MIGHT be allowed to help shovel coal.

On the 10th of July another Artillery unit was finished being assembled in the Province of Nagano. It was ordered to join the nearest Army.

The Province of Toyama announced it had finished building a Fort. It invited the locals to come look at it and say, “ohhhh.”

The Province of Fukuoka finished building a rail system and painted racing strips on the steam engines to make them look cool.

sZSpGyaR_o.jpg

The Province of Nagasaki finished its rail system and gave their engines faces. Horrible faces designed to scare away ghosts, evil spirits, and poor people.

Tn9WkAwG_o.jpg

The new Artillery Brigade joined the 2nd Home Island Army on the 6th of September.

JDczsJpS_o.jpg

And on the 6th of September the newest cavalry unit was delivered to Brunei.

7O5CvLOl_o.jpg

On September 11th the research in Empiricism was finished. Which gave the scientists increased power in SCIENCE! In other words they would research slightly faster.

I7XLsOpk_o.jpg

The scientists decided to work on developing Market Structure. Which should help increase the output of the farms and the mines. AND help in Diplomatic Influence.

In October Edo announced it had built a new Glass Factory.

WFqB3FKv_o.jpg

And the international news was full of the normal stuff. America had taken another island and the Marsh was digging up more dinosaurs who just wanted to rest in peace.

In late October Edo announced they now had a Liquor Distillery. Now they had booze to fill all the new glasses they were making.

j2N7mhGE_o.jpg

In October scientists reported that they had discovered Insurance Companies. Most of the populace had no idea what that meant but it did seem to employee a lot of people in meaningless paperwork so that seemed to make the paper industry happy.

v0M0PraU_o.jpg

At the same time, for the military, the scientists also invented Long Range Fire Tactic. A fancy term for using long range guns, or moving quickly, to hit the enemy without letting them hit you.

By the end of November the Province of Sendai announced they had finished a Cement Factory.

In December the international news was full of fears, relations, and dinosaur hunters. One of which killed themself. Kind of sad really. All over a bunch of dinosaur bones.

Victoria 2 has dinosaurs in its news. I've never actually seen that, although it is cool.

Will the US's annexation of islands eventually bring it into conflict with Japan? Or are the islands too far apart to be a reason for conflict?

Unlikely. It is not worth getting into a fight with a Great Power who would just crush me within a year.

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty-Three - European Peace

UJC9YYdW_o.jpg

The year of 1883 had come. And the new Upper House was organized.

IRABYFoH_o.jpg

Sadly, the only Parties to get seats were the Reactionaries, the Communists, and the Anarcho Liberals.

The Liberals, the Conservatives, and the Socialists lost seats. The Liberal Party were very disappointed.

p9vPSq3H_o.jpg

Also the European War had ended. Though nobody was sure who had won. It was hard to tell.

Spain was still having its little war.

1jeiWpxZ_o.jpg

But the Great Powers still seemed to exist. None of them had been knocked down. Or at least none of them had destroyed each other yet. Even the borders kind of looked the same.

The year 1883 might prove interesting. Or just as boring at the other years. Time would tell.

It looks like the Liberals continue to lose power. When will they be forced to give up their majority to a different party? And which party will it be? The Socialists or the Conservatives?

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty-Four - Doom!

83DLB8bW_o.jpg

In February, as the Liberal Party tried to figure out its future plans, the Province of Kagoshima announced it had finished its rail system.

The Province of Niigata, not wishing to be left out, announced it had finished building a Small Arms Factory.

OrRqXQQ7_o.jpg

In the middle of February the Diplomats reported a improvement in the relationship with the Russian Empire.

xg4yhVud_o.jpg

Then Oceania had a small problem. Krakatoa exploded. Which caused a tsunami. Which killed over 36 thousand people who lived on the islands in the area. And could be heard 3000 miles away! Very sad.

Author’s Notes :

I am not even sure the Dutch own this island in THIS game.

Did Krakatoa's eruption have any in-game effects, or was it just flavor?

Do the improved relations with Russia indicate that Japan will take their side in a future worldwide conflict?

We'll ally with anybody. Right now nobody seems interested. And, from what I can tell, there was no in-game effects. On the other hand I don't really have colonies or land near the eruption. Maybe if you do it does something?

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty-Five - Science!

RsE48kAD_o.jpg

Working Hard For Their Money

With the coming of March a Small Arms Factory was finishing being built in the Province of Hiroshima while a railroad system was finished in the Province of Tokushima. Some people were starting to complain about all the noise and smoke the trains were making. But those were poor people.

SXeI9Hnl_o.jpg

More importantly was the announcement that the research on Market Structure had been finished and would help improve Diplomacy, Mining Output, and Farming Output.

BTZFpIhV_o.jpg

The scientists decided to work on machine guns next. The military was pleased.

vdmVXv3q_o.jpg

Then it was announced that it was time for elections again. The horror, the horror.

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty-Six - Trains, Trains, Trains…

0enQGVrr_o.jpg

As March continued more railroad systems were finished. Railroads were completed in the provinces of Yamaguchi, Kochi, Matsue, and Hiroshima.

NNQwG0gx_o.jpg

Then the Province of Shumshu announced they had finished building up their Naval Base.

d72hS4rr_o.jpg

Later in May the Daily Expenses was so low that the government lowered the taxes on both the Middle Class AND the Poor. Just so they could afford stuff. Like food and rent.

Also in May the provinces of Okayama and Matsuyama reported that they ALSO had finished their new railroad system.

And the Province of Brunei had finished upgrading its Naval Base.

But the first debate was about to happen. Who would come out of the election with glory? And who would come out of the election in defeat?

Do you as a player have any direct control over election results/government composition?
How I pick the choices during debates and also I can sometimes just override the elections and put a party I want in charge. But to pass reforms and such, you need the votes. So I have to work with the other parties to get things to work. Because the Liberals don't have enough votes to do anything without help.

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty-Seven - The First Debate

DFwvJADv_o.jpg

The First Debate happened on the 3rd of June and focused on the Economy. Should it be a Free Market? Planned?

The problem was the Liberal Party believed in Laissez Faire, in other words hands off, and much of the populace of Japan DID not.

nfAuph2d_o.jpg

In the end the Liberal Party had to pick the lesser of all the evil choices. That, maybe, there was something in a planned economy. Which, sadly, would more likely help the Marxists.

XkhS9JxF_o.jpg

While this was going on Spain was close to winning its war with Yemen.

cFSA4Y7G_o.jpg

And the provinces of Pontanak and Hakodate both announced they had updated their Naval Base.

c63LH9pB_o.jpg

While the international news was full of fear, dreams, hopes, and nightmares.

BgG64hFu_o.jpg

Then, in July, the scientists announced they had discovered the Oligopoly Structure. Which would help the output of the Factories.

HlUrq7p0_o.jpg

In late July there was a large tea harvest in Osaka. And the government decided that the farmers’ could keep the tea to themselves.

Also, the Province of Niigata upgraded its Naval Base.

dmxkcZXl_o.jpg

But in August the international news was starting to look scary. War and Revolution rocked the Earth. When would it end?
