I think I spent about $500 on one of the first CDR/CDRW writers: Ricoh MP6200S 2x2x6 speed.

Late medieval period, computerwise - when a CD writer was a huge investment...

Then I grew up in the Cretacious Period of Computers! Were you could only afford to have one of the "high end" games on your computer at any given moment (Wing Commander, Kings Quest VI, etc.) because the Hard Drives were too small! Deleting them was a pain I remember, until I got the Deltree Command :).

...the first computer I had had the computer in the keyboard, ran on audio cassettes, ran under BASIC, and had a black-and-white screen. It was slower and stupider than my present graphing calculator - by a long shot.

And heaven forbid we should think of RAM. 640K was a long way off.

Ha, well. Officially my first computer was a C-64; and yes it had audio cassettes! I did have colour screens though, which was a big deal because all my friends had Macs that were strictly monochrome.

P.S. "Load ''Game'' ,8,1" was that how the command structure worked on that again, it's been sooo long.

Oh, no wait...ARRGH!

*Nostalgia Attack*

Vaguely white/blue screen...a blinking cursor.

LOAD "*",8,1

or

Load "$",8

if I couldn't remember where the game was...it’s been ages. The Jurassic age, perhaps.

Ten commandments, abridged version:

1. You shall have no computer save the C-64

2. Beware the dreaded syntax error.

3. Do not use the name of your cassette recorder in vain, even when it will not find your game.

4. Neither shall you throw it against the wall, table or out the window.

5. Praise the 1541, that saved us the trouble of doing the above anyway.

6. Do not abuse your Wico Red Ball or Tac-2, even when playing Epyx’s Summer Games

7. Do not covet your neighbours Amiga

8. Commodore is your god, and System 3 is their prophet.*

9. You shall avoid shitty arcade/movie conversions bearing the OCEAN logo.

10. You shall not use the sprite kill function on your TFCIII to avoid your enemies in game such as Jumpman Junior.

*: There are of course other prophets as well

It was a big deal when they got those 5 1/4 diskette drives for the C64...high technology, there, with what...120K of disk space?

I don't remember anymore. And they still call these 3 1/2 inch disks floppies now and again. They haven't seen floppy disks.

Perhaps in memory they should release a special edition of Victoria on 5 1/4 inch floppy disks.
