And I'm not the only one involved, Xie Chengnuo needs to get a lot of the credit for developing this mod - his cartographic background was invaluable in setting up the map, while I was more focused on the historical geography element.

He also gave me valuable pointers in how to use Photoshop, which before this project I had never used.

I still don't know how to use photoshop. :eek:o By the way, most of the pictures show up but the odd ones like, European Russia 1, Central US, Canada don't show up, plus some other Asian countries. Though I think it has something to do with my laptop.

I don't think OHGamer has mentioned here two important points in regards to the Clio map, both of which were introduced to allow the Vicky 1 search engine to be more useable. First, everything was done for an anglophone keyboard (hence Konigsberg etc). Second, there were no duplications of city names, so you could actually go to the province you wanted (that's why there was no Sydney in Canada). There was also a decision to go with commonly used English names, eg Vienna, Cologne.

The first two were necessities of the old engine and practicality, the last a design choice consciously made. Something that you should really be aware of to comment on these maps in context.

Now how many provinces will there be in the final game. I figure not too many as to slow performance too much, but moddable to go much higher for the future. Especially considering how once mods start coming out the average computer performance will be higher then during release date making more things possible, for example new provinces being added over time to EU3. Now hopefully the important province boundries will occur where one changes hands and/or is disputed between different nations are included.

I hope there would be a Clio Improvemnet Project mod or map improvement project type of mods for Victoria 2 after its release. What you think?

Remember folks, we made Clio 1.0 under the assumption there would be a hard limit on province numbers. Had Xie and I known we were making a mod that would not have to deal with that issue, many areas of the world (esp outside Europe) would have been more detailed. As of now, Paradox most likely have more pressing developmental issues to deal with than any further tinkering with the map, I think it would be best to accept the map as it is rather than ask for more changes, with the exception of obvious mis-spellings of names.

Right now, one of the things I am working on province layout for Clio's Iron Heart - a map mod being developed for HoI3. For Clio 2.0 for Victoria, my thoughts are something about halfway between what comes out in the commercial release for V2 and what we're planning for Iron Heart. It definitely will not have all the provinces that an HoI3 map would have, as that would probably kill most computer processors, but especially outside Europe (and some tweaking inside Europe) more is planned.

First thing I shall be editing in V2 is "Londonderry" to "Derry" ;)

Other Irish provinces look good but Waterford, while in the right province, should ideally be named Tipperary. The latter was much more important during the period, particularly 1916 onwards

But industrially, Waterford was a major center for glass/crystal production, which grew throughout the Victoria era, which I why I think Waterford was used by Paradox in V1 IIRC and why Clio chose it for Clio 1.0.

Sometimes it isn't just about politics ;)

Full steam ahead on Clio's Iron Heart, say I. No matter to what heights they can patch it, I can't really get stuck into it before someone fixes that appalling map.

At the risk of sounding like an ungracious whinger, might it not be a good idea to split South Africa up into the four historical provinces? Cape Province, OFS, Transvaal and Natal?

It does form the basis of the old flag (the union jack representing the two british provinces, the old transvaal and OFS flags for the two afrikaans republics - see my avatar).

and unyanti is a weird name for the caprivi strip, but i suppose it would be a bit too determinist to call it that, as the germans may never colonise SWA in-game. by that same token, however, maybe swakopmund, windhoek and walvis bay should change to their herero names. and angra pequena could more recognisably be called skeleton coast? having an arbitrary portuguese name, angra pequena, replace an arbitrary german name, luederitz, seems arbitrary. :)

a better name for ulundi might be KwaZulu (i.e. Zululand) as this was the hsitorical homelad of the Zulus. Bisho and Umtata might best be called Ciskei and Transkei, respectively.

Correct. EU2/EU3 uses region names, HoI and Victoria city names.

And the four historic provinces of South Africa are there

Fair enough, I'd forgotten about the glass industry (about all Waterford is famous for). But what are the criteria for deciding the 'main town' - is it economic, political, strategic, etc? In this case, was it a matter of weighing up Waterford's industrial base against Tipperary's role as an administrative centre? Or is there even such a formal process?

Fair enough, I'd forgotten about the glass industry (about all Waterford is famous for). But what are the criteria for deciding the 'main town' - is it economic, political, strategic, etc? In this case, was it a matter of weighing up Waterford's industrial base against Tipperary's role as an administrative centre? Or is there even such a formal process?
I believe that in this case, the main factor was the fact that Tipperary is so isolated. I mean, everyone knows that it's a long way to Tipperary :).

I would say it's mostly a matter of industrial base. In the Swedish province of Östergötland Paradox opted for Norrköping as the main city. It grew rapidly during the Victorian era due to textile industries and ended up Swedens second largest city at the time. Still, it has never been the political, religous or cultural centre of the province.

I was afraid Ethiopia would be seriously messed up on the map. Acctually not that bad, the only province I am disappointed is not on the map is Jima, which was semi- independent until the early 30s. (Bela Shangul is too small anyway, but would have been nice).

I wonder how Vicky 2 will handle that region. In 1836 the Highlands were not yet unified and the Lowlands not yet conquered.

The time period is pretty interesting from an Ethiopian perspective, if I ever play an African minor there is no contest.
