This is not a what game is better thread, more of an observation of the extra traffic the last three months on the Vicky site. (I play and enjoy both)

Besides noticing that Vicky has a lot of new players, and Forum activity is, well active, i began to notice how the VicKy Forums get at least double if not triple the amount of visitors then the CK forums do CONSISTENTLY. I have been watching this over the last few months and have to say that i never saw CK have even half the visitors that Vicky does ever!

Threads are created with more frequency and responded to then in the CK forums. These are not the same die hard fans in the Vicky forums either. One just needs to look the diverse amount of posters many of which are new players!

Topic are still being discussed new strategies are still being explored.

Vip and other mods are still being worked on/refined/created, garnering new interest and extending the life of this great game.(Even non players of VIP should give it up for OH gamer and the rest of the vip crew, they keep Vicky alive longer then it would be without VIP)

Bottom line is that Vicky seems to have a much healthier following. A larger community of players. Not knocking CK, i love the game and play it a lot, but it does lead me to...

Why is Paradox spending so much time on CK when it seems to have such a smaller community then Vicky? CK MP forums is a ghost town. I have never even seen a CK game on VNET while i have actually played many a pick up game of Vicky(HOI2 as well of course) and often see a few games of Vicky being set up throughout the week.

Do some of the devs play a lot of CK MP hence the support? I really cannot figure out the logic in this one. Again do not get me wrong as i really love CK because its so different from all the other Paradox games but still retains the Paradox spirit. More of an observation not motivated by emotion of any sort.

Opinions?

Because that indicates CK is not as good and needs more work. ;)

I get the impression that they think 1.03 Vicky and 1.05 CK are about the same. CK needed alot more work than Vicky. I agree.

I also think that 1.04 will come out eventually. I have hi hopes for this patch, while not being too hi ;) I'm sure that it'll be a fairly extensive and final patch.

The Vicky pages are not only busier than Ck but they are busier than any other forum of any other game (and I am checked many other forum sites for PC games). I think it is a reflection of the depth of the game and the fanatacism (spelling?) of its users.

I've only started posting to the Paradox forums again after a long hiatus and I've noticed the same thing. This was the forum I used to post to most often and I was always impressed at how quick it was to get a response. I've started posting to the CK one as I've got into that in a big way and I intend to try and do a 1066-1920 game (yeah, yeah...) so my attention's there at the moment, but it is no where near as active as this forum.

And I still love Victoria lots and lots - can't wait to see what state the map's in once I finish my games of CK and EU2 :)

I am a loyal EU2 player. I bought Victoria when it first came out. I was very disappointed with the game. It was obvious to me that there was alot that still needed to be worked out. So I uninstalled Victoria and decided to wait for the game to be improved. I have visited the Victoria forums off and on to check up on the game. After some observation of this forum the last few days I have decided it's time to give Victoria a second chance. From what I've heard I think if I install VIP I should be in for a good game.

No offense but you waited too long! 1.3c has been out for eons and its more so stable then EU2 was at this point. What needs to be worked out are minor points in the econ and other parts of the game model, the 1.3c patch really has no show stopper bugs that make the game unplayable.

out of curiousity what were some of the issues that forced you to shelve the game? Im willing to bet that most of those issues were resolved with patches way prior to 1.3c.

Regardless have fun with Vicky! I suggest you put a few Vanilla games under your belt before you take on VIP. VIP is a great experience but it just might overwhelm you and send you back to another two year hiatus from Vicky!

I certainly hope that the sales of Vicky are picking up as well. They need some encouragement to make Vicky 2. I think that, maybe, people are starting to see that the game isn't "too tough" ( ) with the micromanagement. Rather, it gives you the opportunity to do EXACTLY what you want to do. And if you don't like it, you can always let the computer handle it. CK is definitely a good game in its own right, but Vicky is much better. Let's all chant at the same time, now: VICKY 2! VICKY 2! VICKY 2! VICKY 2!

CK needs the work.

whoever said there's more activity here than in the other game forums is wrong. HOI 2 has the most activity by far. And my impression is that EU II has more than Vicky.

Yes, and oddly enough EU2 has the most constant activity with the exception of HOI2 and i know one of the moderators told me that it was a close call between the two.

I think it says a lot about Vicky though. The game has a massive amount of replayability.

I think what hurts Vicky the most with the average gamer is the Tediousness of gameplay.(heck its turned off many a Paradox Grognard) Its not that the game is too complicated or has too much information, its how that information is organized and presented to the player.

Vicky's Guis suck. Period. Want to take a pop out of that factory? Well you have to click on a + or - icon that is less then 2 millimeters wide! Sweet! Can you say Carpal tunnel in one gaming session? Many of the buttons as well as the layout of the GUI's are just not thought out very well.

Compare Vicky's Guis to those of HOI2(Which are the best to date for any Paradox game)

All of the Gui's lead/ link into any other Guis if the information contained is even somewhat related. Any information you want is at your fingertips or a few QUICK and EASY clicks away. Large buttons. Type that is easy to read. Logical progression. Its Intuitive and efficient and well thought to make a long story short.

How have HOI2's GUIS helped it be more successful then Vicky's? By not frustrating the player, thats how. With Vicky only those that are fascinated with the Gernre, time period, or historical/mil historical nuts are the only ones that end up sticking around because they will deal with the frustration that Vicky doles out in order to play a niche genre that they cannot get enough of. Your average gamer is out the door as soon as his patience is tested.

HOI2 on the other hand sucks in your average gamer by making the game fun and easy to play. You do not mind the bugs that come with games like this as much when you not pulling your hair out but rather having a real fun time. (Those same casual gamers are an abrasive bunch though, check out how terse HOI2 forums can be when compared to Paradox's other forums! Oh well the price of growth i guess)

You also do not have such a large exodus of first timers who get sick of having to click 1000 times on avg every ten minuets(tiny buttons), tons of stats and happeneings, basically a massive buttload of info to monitor. HOI2 game system and GUI's really help the player simplify the entire experience. The ability to automate almost any aspect of the game in a simple and efficient manner with games as complex as these is a must IMO.

I know there were a lot of other factors as to why Vicky did not do as well as expected(StratGfirst comes to mind) Horrible marketing, Distrib, massively buggy version for the game rags to review, blah blah...

Most games are flawed upon release in some way or another. Most gamers realize this. How easy and fun you make it for a gamer to interact with said game is important. Vicky seems so much more like work to your average gamer then HOI2 does even to many of Paradox's fans.

Vicky 2 with the polish of HOI2 would be a wonder to behold, truly. As it is i still love the damn game, i just know deep down that it really could have been something along the lines of EU2. :(

Wasn't Victoria's GUI hailed as the best Paradox had ever produced? The problem with the public is they always want more. :)

I think Vicky is intended for a more mature gamer, though. I've never had any problems with the buttons. In fact, I love the way it's laid out. I like it much more so than any of the other games. I guess that's where we differ, though.

i do believe you are right about the activity, but it does sometimes take awhile to get a response. its no where near the EUII and HOI2. but it is above CK.

CK has alot of bugs and stuff that still needs fixing. Vicky does to. but they have more people that make mods to fix the game and make playability easier. CK can not really be changed that way. there are many more variables you can change in vicky then in CK.

Vicky has a challenge, and point to it. to be #1. CK has no real point besides the RPG value, and that is lost on many people. CK is very open ended and free, and with todays games that are very linear, it just doesnt work out to well. the players dont have a goal so they arent sure what to do.

also, the help, strategy and advice is VERY lacking for CK. more so then any other game paradox has i believe. this causes most to give up.

i play and enjoy both. but i dont think you could really compare the two beyond the fact that more people play vicky and they were both made by paradox. i dont think i could pick one thats a favorite right now.

but, i to, as someone else said, want to go from 1068-1914. i think that would be awesome. though i would have to contain myself so i dont get world domination by EUII..... :p

Wouldn't go that far...in particular, there's the CA/BB/DN shore bombardment bug that totally breaks wars anywhere near a shoreline after 1880. Fixable yourself, yes...but the hard part is making sure that everyone in an MP game has the same bug workarounds.
