Don't laugh but because of Victoria I like conservative
How?
Well I consider myself social-liberal and at first I tried to play the game like that, giving my citizens everything - good health care, pension,no trade tariffs, democratic elections, and what happened?
The country would go bankrupt, the people would revolt, other country would attack and kick my a**...
So from that point on I try to play as conservative con/monarchy
Vicky made me a conservative :D

EDIT:Not to mention that most liberal parties in the game are free trade
and anti military

I think what most new players wipe out on is this point right here. In Victoria, it is important for most countries to (and I dislike this word, but what cha gonna do?) evolve from their conservative, agricultural beginnings and grow slowly to become an industrial powerhouse with much more liberal leanings. Move too quickly and the predominate conservatives will create too many problems for you to maintain any real stability. Move too slowly and then you find yourself fighting liberal revolts. Hitting this fine balance of demographics while being able to expand in either territory and/or prestige without suffering from war exhaustion and nationalistic revolutions too badly AND expanding your economy all at the same time is the really wonderful aspect of this game over any other that I have yet to play.

This is an over-generalization of game play, to be sure; but it is fairly representative. The devil is always in the details. :D

Wow I bet those leftist Swedes are kicking themselves now. :p

But anyway, building on what RELee's saying, what I like about Victoria is how situational the policies are. There isn't one government type that's going to be right for every nation at every point in time, which I think is also true in rl. In game, you've got to put aside your own ideology (which is influenced by the situation you're living in) and put yourself into the head of a leader in a completely different time and place.

Playing this game has made me feel incredibaly cruel. I bought it and wanted to bring great joy to my little country, making it has brilliant standards of living, be able to become a power as well. Sadly I was wrong in doing this. Instead my country is a hellhole generating large amounts of money.

In Victoria, as in real life, socialism is the only way of securing long-term stability, as well as offering better working conditions for everyone.

bah, a Divison for every Province and my people love me no matter what I shove down their throat!

Thinking about that, theres no process in the game for the army to turn against your rule. The main reason the Revolution of 1917 worked was because the army units in the area finally refused to fire on the Protesters.
Hopefully in future add-ons/whatever for Victoria, the liklihood of soldiers rebelling will be linked to the militancy of the soldier POPs that those soldiers are from.
So if your POPs are happy, everything's fine. But if there's a famine and you're losing the war...watch out.

Vicky game mechanics are a pretty dumb reason to change your political views. In the game we want massive empires and loads of cash, so with go with oppressive dictatorships or free market libertopias where you can put arsenic in food. In reality, however, we prefer happiness and well being of the populace over a huge national dick.

I like turning countries socialist. I've never done it with a huge one, but my first successful game ever was as Belgium, and I was just trying to figure things out. After getting my head around the game and industrializing pretty well, I decided it was time to put a little red on the map of Europe... Even it wasn't much.

Hey, socialism's about everyone doing their part, right?

Where are all the Anarcho-Liberals at?

Oh, right. They turn countries into dictatorships and take away their internet access. Typical libertarians.
