The game was up for France before the City of Light was captured. As quoted from Panzer Battles, by Maj. General von Mellenthin on the invasion of France...

In contrast to 1914, the possession of Paris had no influence on strategic decisions. The city was no longer a great fortress from which a reserve army might sally out and attack our communications. The French High Command declared Paris an open city, and the German High Command virtually ignored the place in its calculations-the entry of German troops on 14 June was a mere incident in the campaign.
Like Aetius said, the British army was gone. As was nearly all of the French army (what remained was no match for the Panzer divisions already in Brest-Poiters-Lyon). France was already crumbling by the time Paris was captured... the capture of the city was not the reason for the French surrender. It was because the French had already been thouroughly defeated beyond all hope of victory.

Well now, don't jump to conclusions. As I recall, it was hinted that the Vichy event depended upon OTHER factors than merely taking Paris. Perhaps there are secondary provinces which must be taken first, the traditional North->South sweep, even.
There was a comment from a Russian who snuck two divisions behind the French line, walked into Paris, and the French accepted the Vichy event, even when the French had a superior strategic position and a larger army. Wonderful.

Vichy gives France an option to surrender under certain conditions. You can keep on fighting.
But the AI won't ever reject it. That's not the kind of game I want to play... go for Paris at all costs, then once you INSTANTLY get one division in the city then game over. That's the kind of thing you find in games like Panzer General and other tactically focused games... not in a game like HOI which is entirely based upon real strategy (i.e. aiming for tangible objectives, and always having to worry about the 'whole picture'), not just capture a city by such and such a date to 'win', forgetting everything else, leaving your flanks and supply open, just driving for a spot on the map.

But thats not how it works. In another thread about this Bib stated that you have to hold several other key areas to trigger the Vichy event.

Is there an option to choose to give them a Vichy ultimatum, or a possibility to offer it to them at a later point? While France may already be defeated by the time Paris falls, that won't always be the case, and I think it might be a real cop out, if, say the French Army is outflanked and Paris falls due to a good tactical move, rather than the complete annihilation of their army. :) However, if I end up overrunning most of France after I capture Paris, the Vichy event may make more sense... but I doubt it's possible to give them the option to surrender like that after the fact. :(

Hey, we Americans admit we suck at geography. Don't remember the specifics of too many 19th Century wars, either. ;)
Yeah, it's true. ;)
Being that I'm a history major I had a slight advantage. Back in 8th grade we used to have these little geography competitions in my social studies class. I did so well the teacher pitted me against the rest of the class (about 25 other people), and I won 21 to 15. ;)

Yes, but what if I want to create Vichy France eventually, find myself in Paris, while the French still have a chance? If I set the trigger to multiple provinces, at least then I can have some control over when the event takes place. ;)

You're right, I don't have to drop 5 parachute divisions outside of Paris to 'cheat' every game, but there are still circumstances when I want Vichy, but not before the time may be right. ;)

Besides, I'm not forcing the new event on anyone else, am I? ;) :D I'm just making a bit of a safeguard against an accidental or unwanted premature Vichy.

Can Italy DoW France and then still join the Axis after the Vichy event?

As long as Germany and Italy are still on good terms they should still be able to join the axis. Hopefully refusing to join when Germany offers won't put your relations down too much.

Edit: Can the Vichy event trigger if a non axis Italy is at war with France? If so it may still be kept from happening is Italy takes Vichy.
