I know this has probably already been answered, but I want an update...
I'm thinking of getting Vic 2 or Vic 3, but what I'm really interested in is the industrialisation of the uncivilised wild west and forging railroads etc. Which game does that better? Thanks!

Honestly? If that particular thing is what you're interested in, then neither.

Though I would say that railroads were much more rewarding to build in Vic 2, as they required higher levels of tech to upgrade, while in Vic3 you kinda just plonk them nilly-willy.

More 3 than 2 but honestly if you’re really only interested in the Wild West you should get a wild west themed game. You can industrialize the west in vic3 in a satisfying way, but it won’t be a very thematic way (no outlaws or sheriffs or whatever). You will see little trains chugging across the map though.

If you want game with game-breaking bugs without any chance of fixing then you should choose V2.
If you want game with game-breaking bugs with a mediocre chance of fixing then you should choose V3.
;)

If try V2 then you need Heart of Darkness because it vastly improves the game (and unfortunately introduces several big problems).

You mean ctrl-clickling everything as soon as you got any new railroad tech? how that wasnt nilly-willy?

And don't forget the cancer that was a diplomatic minigame with spheres of influences.... peopele really do have selective memory and cherry-peaking mentality.

The first Victoria is way more fun if you play with uncivilised nations.

Vic2 i don't recomend if you don't buy with all the dlc.

Economy inside Sphere of Influence.
The global economy works mostly without problem but unfortunately, the market inside the Sphere of Influence works strangely and can destroy smaller state economies very fast.
There is the problem of doubling the real amount of produced goods so even if all participant build for example 100 units of steel - on the internal market is accessible 200 units of steel.
Then all states (starting from the highest prestige one) buy their desired share of goods. But it pays only the full price but only a portion of the money (fraction corresponding to current state home production) is paid to only domestic producers even if they buy from other states from the Sphere of Influence.
This means that the main country of the sphere buys most of the goods but does not pay the other countries.
So other countries do not get most of the money from the sold goods and spiral into bankruptcy.
There is a much longer article with more details on the Vic2 reddit forum.

I love the Vic2 game. I have several hundreds of hours inside of it. But the more I study the game mechanics then more I was amazed that it even could work with all the unfixable problems.

Also, did you know that artisans can somehow produce cars from fruits? ;)

You can actually populate the West in Vicky 3, so that's a point in its favour. Really, though, it depends what you want out of the game. All three Victorias feature the expansion to the west of the US, but they all play pretty differently. Vicky 3 has the most focus on economy and industrialisation, as well as politics; it's also the only one of the three that models the extant native nations of the area in any real fashion, though there's no in-depth interaction yet. Its Trail of Tears is also more fleshed out than Vicky 1 or 2, and you can even possibly avoid the worst parts of it.

But as people said, jf you're looking for a lot of the trappings of the Wild West, Victoria operates at a higher strategic level than gunfights, saloons, sheriffs, etc, so you won't get much flavour there.
