Actually, I know he claims he's actually a "Pirate" in the sense of a seaman, but if you read his rants, sometimes he does come out and say, "I pirate software" and stuff like that. In otherwords, the moron thinks he's a pirate in both senses of the word :D

I have to admit here in the UK I have a copy of Victoria.....

admittedly not a very good one, this is what I did:
1. Print out all the screenshoots posted on forum.
2. cut, paste and reconstruct the worldmap.
3. Do the same for all of the sprites and units.
4. take 2000 film canisters, arrange in rows and label in an effort to replicate the games structure.
5. count out 10,000 pieces of pasta to act as the various items and numbers the game needs to record. The differing sorts of pasta each representing different things like manpower, steel, coal etc.
6. repeat this for each day of the game from 1840 to 1920.

Simple really, doubt I'll bother with buy the game, my version seems better. :D

Along the same lines as Armyknife...

I got my copy by loading up my schooner, flying the Jolly Roger, and intercepting a Pan Vision merchantman bound from Stockholm to Copenhagen. ;)

Of course, I am kidding.

Giving something a crippled version = wasted time + wasted money - potential customer. Nothing gained and many lost.

Every demo is a crippled version, yet most games still offer them. Arguing that a demo version of a game would garner one less revenue through demo buyers when no demo at all is offered, and no demo sales at all are being transacted, is nonsensical. How can paradox make less through demo sales than they currently are ?

Can you please tell me what concept used by 4X games to create the demo?

There are game time restrictions, turn restrictions(N/A), days used restrictions, the map could be cropped, the architecture could be closed, the game could demo through a mission-based interface, there are a variety of things one can do. If Paradox wants people to make the effort to buy their latest game, why can't they make an effort to demo it before someone (for whatever reason) feels they've wasted $50 ?

I'm building a time machine - to travel back to 1836. I've got you all beat. By the time 2003 rolls around again, and this game is made... it will be called "Jagdmaus" - an empire under the sun.

Play with your silly pasta...

I thought matrix games only did mail order/download?

AFAIK you're right. I'm of the opinion that releasing the game in that matter is the best option for a niche gaming company. Look at Battlefront and their Combat Mission games, same deal and I would be really surprised if they haven't outsold EU2 by three-fold. But my point is that all three of these are great companies that support their games constantly like Paradox does, and would be good alternatives to SF.

I've read many times on these fora in the past few years that the reason Paradox makes no demos is because they are unable to separate different pieces of the game. Everything is so interconnected that that any demo would be the entire game with restrictions such as only 20 years playable or something. And we all know how quickly demos with those kinds of restrictions are hacked within three days or less, basically giving people the game for free. I do not think this would help the problem.

Just thought of this. What about a Demo with no .txt files? IE, no leaders, no Monarchs (1 monarch of infinite lifespan for each country), no events (normal or random), no unit names (except Unit 1, Unit 2, etc...), no descriptions of anything (except "in the real game..."), and on top of this, only countries in Europe. Nothing else, the rest of the world would be empty, unoccupied territory.

That would make for a somewhat interesting look at how the game works, but it wouldn't give much away to anyone, and the game would be close to unplayable for long periods of time.

Plus, the .exe could have a tag/version which would make it impossible to patch.

Why does the online cd-key argument come up all the time? Although I personally have access to the net at home and so does alot of people, but not everyone has that luxury :(
And some people are just plain paronoid about sending/recieving anything that they can't double check. :p

So any game that isn't based around multiplayer will most certainly, IMO, lose revenues if you need online access just to start playing a SP game

Matrix games are in the stores, though no more frequent than Strategy First games, though Korsun Pocket, unlike any SF games are in Best Buy.

For some reason, the publisher accrues the wrath of all game fans, mostly without logical reason. What is the problem with SF?

Quite simply because IMHO number of pirates >> number of game players without internet connection. Technology moves on and sometimes you have to move with it;)

Along with other possible issues, only having Europe exist would spectacularly screw up the world market and probably make the game effectively unplayable due to these distortions. NO events would make the gave seem less interesting to those playing a demo.
