I don't know what happened but it seems that the average IQ on the forums dropped sharply after the pirated Victoria was released.

Why is it that people who has the pirated version posts questions here on the forum thinking noone will notice? We know where the game is available for purchase and contrary to popular belief most of the world is NOT included. Lots of posts from USA, Canada, Croatia etc...

Shape up!

I think you are doing a great job, and I think that the pirates are very egoistic doing what they did.

Keep up, Patric and Johan.

Edit: You've made a wonderful game, Victoria really rocks.

I was very disappointed when seeing there was a pirated version of Victoria so early. Not because I was jelous of those folks playing it but because for Paradox which will lose X money due to this. They work hard on their products and supports the game and the forum admirably and deserves so much more.

I hope that those who did steal a copy do not share it with others, buy the game legally and delete the stolen copy from their computer.

I really really hope this does not affect future games from the great Paradox folks nagative. I wish "crave" to see more from you and if you think it wouldn't be profitable to make another game I would truly be very sad.

Keep up the great work. In about 2-3 hours I'll be a proud owner of Victoria. :D

Good to see you are clamping down on scum. It's a real shame it got leaked before release. Though I'm not sure I would have made this thread, better to let them think they can get away with posting so more pirates talk openly on the forums about it. Then ban them all in one swoop. :D

They don't deserve the help this forum can provide.

I wish you would bring back the list of the sunken pirates and the posts that sunk them. It was funny, amusing, and emotionally satisfying reading.

Especially for those of us who can't get the game yet but are being good boys and girls.

Like me. :D

There is a way to avoid this U know

First things first, I'm really looking forward to try the game. I also want to congratulate paradox for spending the time after Vic went gold to make a patch for us.

I saw Patric’s list over who’s pirating what and why. The group U wanted to do something about was those that pirate the game because they can download it of the net before it is available in stores.

-Make dead sure that U release the game inn all countries at the same time. Not one week before in “Søta brors’” country, or Sweden as most of you know it, and then two months later in the UK. U are asking for it, sorry. This avoids a big part of this issue.
-Make the game available in an equivalent to steam. We aren’t using the manual anyway, and I’m sure there is a equivalent to steam out there which allows for paying money. For those of you who don’t know what steam is, I’ll tell you. Steam is a way fro you to download games on the internet, and I don’t think anyone has been able to pirate it or RIP it, yet.
-Electronically tag the games you send to reviewers. This way you should know which game is available for download on the net, and will be able to pursue the matter.

Yeah but w/ steam i believe most internet users have been verified as not being pirates via their CD-key... if this could be implemented in future Paradox games, i wouldn't have any objections to it, but i know some people that might... after all a CD-key is a troublesome thing to keep track of~

Excuse me, but do you really think that Paradox is going "Hmm, yes, first we release the game in Sweden, then just to piss people off, we postpone the release in the US a week, and then just for laughs we postpone the release in the UK with a month" ? Lets just say that that is not quite how it works...

Hammer54:

Thanks for your input on the issues. Just wanted to explain how it works with the releases.

As we don't have a worldwide publisher we have to work through local publishers in each territory. This means that we have no way to coordinate the releases as we would go bankrupt if we had to wait for the last publisher to get their act together. Then Victoria would be out in March-April next year :(

We have no plans to implement anything similar to Steam but we are looking at ways of crippling the game if it is not a legal copy of it.

I recommend that you go with the Bridge It! way of doing things.

http://www.auran.com/jet/bridgeit/buynow.htm

You can pay via pay pall/credit card, and then you can download the game and receive a seriel to your email. They then send you the cd in the post. It's a great way of doing things imho.

It means that there is a world wide release, and no fans get tempted by some forbidden fruit!

Although it is a good ensure worldwide release, it isn't just a Paradox decision. They have publishers, who wouldn't like less sales through them.

Patric, cant you somehow "lock" the patces of Vicky so just the people with the official realese can patch the game?
That could be one way to make people less inclined to get pirated copies.

F¤¤k them, im getting really tired of this, no god damn respect at all for honest work. Im equally tired of people defending them, get away and stay away you hednings!

FWIW

That's a darn shame.

FWIW, I'm a game reviewer, and I get the bloody games for free - I *still* go out and buy a copy (each) of EU, EU2, HoI, and Victoria because I want Paradox to stay in business, and keep making such games!!! (Truth in advertising note: I don't do this for every game, a lot of them are crap...)

Stupid pirates. I know computer games are expensive, but when you measure the cost per hour of entertainment, ESPECIALLY for massively great games like Victoria, the cost becomes vanishingly small. For pete's sakes,

I know I'm changing anyone's mind here. But I just had to rant because this pisses me off so bad.

Galactic Civilizations, a game published also by SF here in America, has the option for direct downloading. That isn't even using the argument I'd much rather use, which was "Screw Strategy First in the first place, they are a horrible publisher." ;)

you could use a cd key, and the only way to download the patch is to connect to the online server that verifys the cd key, (much like on battle.net) this is not a complete sollution but it keep's some pirates away. And have some form of cdcheck in each patch.

this will force the pirates to have a correct cd key, and have to find/make a crack each time there's a new patch.
