Very poor performance on a laptop

Two weeks ago I bought a laptop, but performance on EU4 is almost unplayable. the specs are in an attached file

Prior to this laptop I had two others. Both were worse without a real graphics card but managed EU4 almost fine.

THe first 30 or so years into a game are fine, but then it starts to get worse and worse. COnstant 1-2 second freezes as well as no smoothness. Changing graphics doesnt seem to have any affect at all, nor does changing resolution or setting tto window mode. When the game is paused it runs almost smoothly.

I went to nvidia settings and made sure that the grapics card is working for the game. Deleted the game and re-installed. Nothing seems to have any effect.

I also downloaded some app called game booster and it did a diagnosis and iam attaching it. I dont know what its rly telling me but for some reason it says eu4.exe is having some sort of error

If your system logs say this in paradox folder, it's a common problem on tech support right now:

[systemsettings.cpp:198]: System memory: 0MB
[systemsettings.cpp:203]: CPU speed: 4294967295MHz

Please try switching into the beta hotfix. In your Steam library right-click on EU4 and choose properties-beta, and select 1.8-hotfix from the droplist there.

Note that we have no proof this bogus figure is connected with the performance problem. At least one person I know who is not getting the problem has this too, I suspect it might be universal.

thanks guys. I did the hotfix a while ago, it didnt change anything.

BUt I fixed the problem, or at least its much less significant now.

THe problem with my computer turned out to be WIndows 8.1, not merely just the game.
THe fix consisted of going to run: services.msc and then disabling (not just stopping but disabling) two services called superfretch and windows search

Do this if in Task Manager your disk usage is exceptionally high (mine was often 100% for no apparant reason with just running google chrome). After deleting these two services both the laptop performance and the EU4 performance improved drastically and disk usage is now in the 0-50% range

eu4 still lags and isnt "smooth" for me but at least now its manageable

I've slept a bit and talked to a few people. It is *not* universal, but as you say could easily also not be related.
