So I'm playing a game with Rome and have stayed at peace from the time of the Pyrrhic war.

There have been very few wars or even colonisation by other nations.

I gave the Aedui, who have become dominant in Gaul, Cash and Manpower which they don't want to use and only have one army of 21 units. I even tried to open the save game with them and make them build units like that, then when I checked 20 years later, the units were not there and had not been used.

So what can I do to 'spice things up a little' through editing the game files or downloading a mod?

Yeah, I've noticed this as well. The most you can do is provoke a few wars, or get your Infamy level high enough to encourage the AI to declare war on you. I do wish there was a setting for AI aggressiveness like in EU3, though.

Though, I have been thinking of a number of event strings that can be used to force wars between countries. Breaking various treaties, acting too aggressively, wars against protected states etc. Could be interesting.

I agree many games have been all too peaceful with myself as the only war monger. Only Rome and Carthage seem to invade a few barbarians every now and then. An AI aggressiveness switch would be fabulous. Most wars seem to be civil wars only.

I noticed the Suclid's go on a Rampage in Greece Before and in another game Macedonia swallowed all the other Greek minors.

It happens but generally the big boys leave each other alone.

Though, I don't know if many if you play as someone other than Rome that if Rome follows all the missions to eat all the minors and other nations as well.

I dont know how peaceful the AI is. It can vary from one game to the next in my view. For example, I am only 30 years into my game as Massila:

Seleucids and Egyptians have been battering the heads off each other with the advantage swaying between them - Seleucids conquer all of Egypt in one war, the Egyptians come racing back in the next two.

The Seleucids have basically eaten Armenia. The states north of Armenia have been going at it too. Pontus has eaten Bith and Pergamon. Macedon has swalled up some of the Greek minors.

Carathage has pretty much eaten Numida, but has also been invaded by Egypt which has sparked an emerging state, plus additional territory loss.

The Egyptians have also swallowed Crete and taken territory from the Bosphorus Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Epirus and Rome go at it hammer and tongs every few years with Epirus spending the intervening years annexing all the greek minors it can.

In Gaul the Aedui have conquered all around them, as have the Sequani and one or two further north.

And that isnt even considering the civil wars. For only 30 years in, its a lot of fighting. The only thing I am missing is a Punic War between Rome and Carthage but Rome has the mission to destroy Carthage, has finally reduced Epirus to paying tribute and now has a direct border with Carthage, which is being weakened by Egypt, civil war and emerging rebels so I expect Rome to launch a war very soon. All in all, Im quite satisfied with AI aggression in my game.

Yes, I think it is true that there are many more wars when lots of small states are around early in the game. However, once the small fry are gobbled up, the bigs boys sit back and only eye each other uneasily. I want to see more clash of the titans rather than the often pre-nuclear detente state of later games.

While I have a strangle hold on Carthage, my ally Rome does not leap in to snatch a few Carthaginian plums dangling nearby. The AI ignores unguarded Corsica and Sardinia while there is a large Roman fleet and army units within easy reach of these areas. If I were Rome, I would smash and grab while the getting is good and make and an independent peace. They have terrible relations, yet they still sit there like numb-nutted idiots. The Romans do not have to await my invitation, which I won't give because I want it ALL.

Thanks for the responses guys; I was thinking only my game was a little queer but was proved wrong.

Does anyone know how the "initialized" and "colonise" functions work in the gamefile under AI strategy? Is there anything that can be done through the save-game file to make the AI more aggressive?

The AI is kind of funny that way. I've played games as OPM Greek states and been ignored for 200 years and I've also played OPM games and been attacked by the Big Guys within seconds of hitting 'unpause' and starting the game!
