Don't mean to hijack your thread AJ14, but rather than start another thread I'd like to ask some new guy questions.

How do you keep a unit in supply? I attacked some Germans in Koln, they win and on the way back to Arlon in shame my units run out of oil. The tanks and trucks still make it back safely, but the no oil icon shows up until they are on friendly soil. Is this something to worry about?

What determines your leaders' rank and can you promote them?

Is it usefull to keep an IC pool or just use them up and keep a zero balance. Is there any benifits for keeping a stockpile?

The convoy thing is a real hassle. Looking at the two convoys that I started with it's clear that thye are carrying nothing and all of my attempts at placing something on them by add/removing the "X" besides some supply does nothing that I can see. Also, I can't seem to make amounts of any thing carried by the convoys change. I'm pretty anoyed and out of ideas.

Also, judging from the comments so far it seems that the best approach is to avoid war as long as possible so as to build up oil, rubber and steel while ramping up my R & D. I am looking at actually building new units in '38.

Good strategy as long as you dont put off the war until its too late.

Have you tried increasing the number of ships per convoy? They give an estimate of how many you need, and I try to double or even triple it to get the resources back to Germany. It will all be taken care of when you attack Poland, though, so dont worry too much about it.

Mostly agrees with your strategy, but you might just want to save up some IC for unit production as well, I made the mistake of not building a single unit as Germany and ended upp struggling... against Poland!

Always build units. No unwanted surprises that way. ;)

I always try and use ALL my IC's. You ALWAYS need more of something.

I go 30% Consumer goods and supplies. 20% Unit build up. 50% R&D until 1938. Then I slow R&D and mainly build units. I always build a massive airforce. The AI can't really figure out how to use it's airforce so thats the *weak point* I exploit. :D

When in battle do unpredictable things. The guys who made the game most likely did all the 'what ifs' that made sense. Doing something really off-the-wall really screws with the AI's plans.

This is not an exploit. In real life, the US Army trained for many years on Soviet Doctrine because they knew that it was followed to the letter. So, we knew their tactics better then they did. It's when they do something not by the book that the problems started.

Just my 2 cents plus to all questions asked. :)

Something happened during my last game and I don't know why. My one division in the Congo was disbanded due to lack of supply. It was in my territory the whole time. Well I made a new division as a test and the in supply icon was not present and it lost strength every day. What happened?

What was the infastructure of the province? If it was less than 34 that was probably it. Units can't sit around in jungle for long...

Nothing I have tried has made the two convoys work ( I can't put anything on them and if I cancel them I can't restart new ones on the same routes) so it looks like that's it. I guess I'll simply play on and hope that the provinces seperated from me by Danzig don't simply wither and die.

Setting up the convoys requires two basic things to be done. You must first go to the industrial menu and select manage convoys. For a new convoy specify a start province and an end province. Then assign ships to the convoy. The final step in the process is to select what the convoy will carry. The default for a convoy is to carry coal, steel, rubber and oil. This default must be changed to supplies (and oil for units that use oil) in order to put units in supply. this was something that I struggled with as well when I first started to learn the game. Make sure to checkmark (put an X) where a resource is to confirm the shipping out of that resource.
Also, note that if you send out supplies they usually require 2x more transports than the other resources.
Finally, during the war any supply routes that pass through Suez or Gibraltar can be cut off by the allies (depends on who owns those provinces and if you are in the Axis alliance). An example of this is when Italy joins the Axis they quickly lose control of Ethopia because they no longer have any means to supply it via convoys.

Which is why when I play Italy, I effectively write off Ethiopia. I will reconquer it when I crush the Allied armies in Egypt and seize Gibraltar...

Additionally:

Convoys only run once a day at midnight, so you don't see anything happen until the next day. If you are having problems with a convoy, cancel it, and then start it again with a large convoy with all needed boxes checked off, and wait until after midnight to see what happens.

Well it's clear that it simply is not possible to make the two convoys I started with opperate in any fashion. So i'll just go along until my provinces seperated from me by Danzig don't simply wither and die.

Another thing that happend (day 2, '36) is that a British plane flew over the Southern half of Germany to fast for me to respond to or even tell what it was exactly. I assume that it was on spy mission but beyond I wondered if it would cause a war to shoot down such planes or if it's possible to send a diplomatic protest to London? Isn't air space restricted in peace time?

Also, when trading on the world market it looks like the trades I offer never go away they just remain while the amounts of coal, oil etc change accordingly.

The violated airspace thing has been brought up before. As of this version, there is nothing you can do about it until you are at war. Your trades on the World Market will continue to transact daily until either you cancel the agreement or the market eventually rejects your trade due to a lack of the resource you are trading for.

I am now into the second month of '36 and I noted some problems right off the bat. Although I am building very little in terms of units as a result of placing everything I can into R&D yet I noticed that my stock pile of steel is declining by about 200 per day. Very little steel shows up on the market each day (almost always less then 20 units) and although I am (for some unknown reason) able to buy 50-70 units of steel on a 3 to 1 exchange rate for coal I still am still facing a serious steel shortage. Naturally I am upgrading by industries but it i'll be 10 months before I see a slight benifit (nothing close to what I need in terms of steel) so I am basically out of ideas.

Given that it seems very unrealistic for Germany to be running out of steel prior to '44 I can't help but to wonder if some cheat codes exist for HoI and if so how do I use them?

Ahem.

Existing convoys can still go through those straits. Even when an enemy nation controls it. Mysteriously enough.

But new convoys cannot be created through enemy controlled straits.

Italy's problem with supplying Ethiopia comes mostly from losing convoy ships.
