AFAIK, Venice is unplayable because they are a republic. I know you definitely cannot start as them. You also cannot create the Kingdom-level title of Venice unless you are a Doge. I have never tried letting Venice expand a bit (because they never seem to in my game) and then taking Venice itself and trying to usurp the Kingdom-level title; in theory this should work, because it allows you to get titles that you otherwise can't create because of cultural restrictions.

Venice is a republic during the entire time period so you cannot start as them without any modding. And while you can ursrup the Duchy of Venice I do not think you ursurp the Kingdom of Venice without being a republic which is something you cannot play in CK2.

EDIT: I have never actually tried to ursurp the Kingdom of Venice so it could be possible.

You would have to gobble them up as a regular Count/Duke and make the Duchy of Venice your primary title. But beware, they have loads of money, and will roflstomp you with mercs if you are small enough and don't look out :)

If you have the money and your capital in northern Italy you can just hire all mercenaries first so there are no mercenaries available for Venice. That would guarantee a win. Another solution is to make sure to attack the mercenaries as soon as they spawn when they still are weak.

The easiest way to take Venice is to fabricate a claim early on as Matilda di Canossa and then conquer them whist they only have one province. You'll then own the province personally (though with the primary holding being a city, it's better to give it to a vassal) and be duchess of Venice.

In my last game I went and took the ducjy of venice. As soon as I DOW they spawned a 8000 strong army, mostly mercs I wager, so be careful, specially as youll be fighting with the penalty for your army leaving their ships.

I believe you can claim the kingdom title if you wait 100 years for it to become a de jure title right? I never bothered but it might be a good idea soyou can keepthe doge as a direct vassal when youre emperor, without the dejureliege getting pissed.

I normally put my army in ships off of Venice. That lets me hit their mercs as soon as they are hired. You still need a good sized force, both to beat the big stack of mercs and to siege down the troops that a city can get with basically infinite money.

Getting to play as Venice is pretty easy. Start as a OPM and Request an Invasion from the Pope. You get to be King, you get to have a nice city, you get to murderate all the people, you get the Conqueror title. Lots of good stuff.

I've only ever tested this though, to see IF I could should I ever want to :p

Tbh no siege was required for me, as beating the venetian stack was enough to get 100 warscore. Maybe I was lucky.

Shouldn't it be possible to gain the Kingdom of Venice via a crusade if the Doge becomes a heretic or heathen? Once it gets de jure land, of course.

That sounds like a LOT more work that it's worth. Since you can relatively easily get a primary title claim, there's no real reason not to Invade even late-game.

You could Jihad it of course...

But it's more fun to crusade than to invade. All the Christian nations of Europe united against a single City-state, good times. Besides how exactly does one get a primary title claim against a serene republic (I honestly don't know)?

You have to ask the Pope for an invasion, it's the only way. It can't be usurped, it can't be inherited, it can't be created when it's de jure. I guess you could Jihad it, but I've never tried it myself.
I didn't know the player could decide where crusades went to. I thought there was a list of potential crusade targets that the AI pope chooses between based on how important they are and whether or not they're owned by heretics/muslims.

In my game, the Doge went Shia, entirely surrounded by the Catholic Holy Roman Empire. That's when I took it, but that probably doesn't happen all too often.

You can create the duchy title, but not the kingdom title.

If you start of as a count with only one county and start saving up money from start you will actually be able to defeat them, granted that you have enough soldiers and mercs to actually defeat them in combat as soon as they purchase the mercs.

What I tend to do is to take a county and saving up cash, letting the mercs I purchase (they tend to buy a stack of 4500 soldiers or 3k in my games) rest outside of Venice. Once I get the invasion right I put my mercs to march on them, when they are about half way or more on their way over to the island I declear war on them. They will use they money to buy some mercs, however they still need to have their moral risen so should be very easy to defeat. If you win you tend to get quite a bit of war score and only have to siege them, should not be to hard. However keep in mind that they may purchase some more mercs and let them rest on the mainland of Italy. However they do not tend to attack unless they got more units, so should be a easy victory.

Once you win you will get all of the demenses as well as the king title. Just keep in mind that it is a waste to make the duchy of Venice, unless you plan to keep it for a RP capital or simply want the prestige. But the de jure of the duchy is only the county of Venice.. so kind of useless in my views. The advantage you get from winning is your own kingdom outside the de jure of HRE, giving you the posibility to push for high-CA to get primo sucession laws if you want it.
