Venice didn't have colonies in the traditional sense, but Ionia and Crete were somewhat colonies, as was Cyprus, where the Venicians set up government and defense of the islands to maintain their Mediterranean trade. I don't believe that Venice had any possessions outside of the Mediterranean area.

BTW, while we are on the subject of Venice, I read the other day that Venice, due to pollution and other factors, has become somewhat of a ghost town, and is in danger of having very little in the way of non-tourist residents. How much of this is true, and how much is exagerrated??

Yes that is true about Venice today. I went last summer and they tour guide told us because of the sinking, pollution etc most people do not live in Venice but moved to the mainland. He said the majority of people are tourists in Venice now.

There are a lot of apartments on the Island part of Venive. Are they empty? I think the Isalnd would be able to populate a big population because it is very compact. Anyone having stats about how many that lives on the islands?

The city of Venice today has a population of only 70,000, although a further 180,000 live in Mestre on the mainland. This is a significant reduction from the population of the city early in the century (184,000 people lived in Venice and nearby islands in 1950), and the average age of the inhabitants is now 46. However, 40,000 people still commute to work in Venice, and huge numbers of tourists travel there every year.
